of 1.5 meter. The following data are given as: = 16.5 kN / m3, = 36 , No. of blows by
standard penetration test N = 27 and Depth of water table = 1.5 m.
11. Two load tests were performed at a site-one with 60 cm square plate other with a 75 cm
square plate. For a settlement of 15 mm, the loads were recorded as 50 kN and 90 kN
respectively in the two tests. Determine the allowable bearing pressure of the sand and the
load which a square footing 1.5 m size can carry with the settlement not exceeding
25 mm.

12. Determine the size of the square footing at the ground level to transmit a load of 900 kN in

sand having unit weight 18 kN/m & = 36 (Nc = 50.59, Nq = 37.75, N = 56.31). Factor of
safety is 3.0. What is the modification in the result, if the footing may be placed at a depth of
1 m below the ground surface? The site is subject to flooding.

Assignment 3: PileFoundation

1. Classify the pile according to their function, support action and installation.
2. Mention various static and dynamic formulas for determination of load carrying capacity
of piles.
3. Under what conditions and where a pile foundation is more suitable than shallow
foundation?
4. Explain with sketch a pile load test.
5. In a pile group what are the geometrical properties that are to be consider in bringing out
of proper spacing of piles to ensure that they carry equal load.

c. Under reamed pile foundation.
7. A precast concrete pile is driven with a 30 kN drop hammer with a free fall of 1.5 m.
The average penetration recorded in the last few blows is 5 mm/blows. Estimate the
allowable load on the pile using the Engineering News formula.
8. Design a square pile group to carry 400kN in clay with an unconfined compression
strength 60 kN/m2. The piles are 30 cm diameter and 6 meter long and adhesion factor
may be taken 0.6.
9. Determine the static pile capacity of 500 mm diameter , 10 meter long in sandy clay
with c=30 kN/m2, = 20. =18 kN/m3. Use bearing capacity factors NC=25, Nq=9,
N =4. Take skin friction = 15 kN/m2.
10. Using Hileys formula , determine the safe pile load with following data,
Weight of hammer = 30 kN, Weight of pile = 15 kN Average penetration per blow = 10
mm, hammer fall = 0.9 meter, pile diameter = 300 mm, hammer efficiency = 80%, total
elastic compression = 15 mm, coefficient of restitution = 0.4, pile length = 12 meter.
11. In a 16 pile group, the pile diameter is 0.4 meter & center to center spacing of piles in
the square group is 1.5 meter. If Cu = 50 kN/m2, determine whether the failure would
occur as a block failure or when the pile act individually (neglect bearing at tip of pile).
All piles are 12 meter long. For shear mobilization around each pile take m = 0.7. Also
determine the safe load on this group.
12. Design a square pile group to carry 400 kN load in clay with an unconfined compressive
strength of 60 kN/m2. The piles are 30 cm diameter and 6 m long.
Adhesion factor = 0.6, F.S. =3.

Rs. 5.0 lakhs
II. (y) Lease the trucks for four year for Rs. 4.1Lakhs per year paid in advance at the beginning of
each year. The contractor pays all operating and maintenance cost for the trucks and the leasing
company retains ownership.
III. (z) Purchase the truck on special time payment with Rs.4.0 lakhs down payment now and Rs.4.5
lakhs per year at the end of each year for three year. Assume the truck will be sold after four years
for Rs. 5.0 lakhs each.
If the builder's minimum attractive rate of return is 8 %. Which alternative should be used?

4. (A) State Rules for drawing network. Explain with suitable examples, errors in AOA networks.
(B) A small project consists of twelve activities. Interrelationships amongst various activities are as
follows:
Activity A is starting activity and proceeds activities B, C and D.
Activity E depends on activities B and C
Activity F follows activities C and D.
Activities G and H can start as soon as activity D is completed.
Activity I succeeds activities G, E and F.
Activities J and K can start only when activities H and I are completed.
Activity L is the last activity and it succeeds activities J and K.

5. The following network shown in figure 1 has the estimated duration for each activity marked.
Determine the critical path. Also determine total float and free Float for each activity.

The project overhead costs are Rs. 3000 per week. Find the optimum duration and the cost associated

approach = 1.25 m, Wheel base of crane = 3.5 m, Self weight of rail section = 300 N/m.
Assume no lateral retraining along the span. Provide checks for B.M and deflection
only.

5. A simply supported welded plate girder of span 24 m is to be design to carry uniformly

8.0 m from each supports. Design and detail the cross section of the girder for the
critical moment. Provide all required checks as per IS provisions. Workout locations for
the flange curtailment.

6. Design a welded plate girder with a clear span of 16 m simply supported at the
ends subjected to following:
Dead load including self weight= 25 kN/m, Imposed Load = 15 kN/m,Two Moving
Loads = 200 kN each spaced 2 m apart.Assume that the top compression flange of
the plate girder is restrained laterally and prevented from rotating. Design as an
unstiffened plate girder with thick webs.

Assignment 4: Foot Over Bridge


1. Design a Warren type Lattice Girder of steel foot over bridge of of span of 18 m of
having a panel length of 3m, subjected to live load of 5 kN/m2. Width of walk way
is 4m. Use ISMB section only. Assume self weight of girder is as 0.5 kN/m.
Thickness of slab as 120 mm, with LL is of 5kN/m2 and FF is 1.0 kN/m2. Angle
between cross chord and bottom chord is 600. Use fy = 250 MPa.

2. Design a N-type Lattice Girder of steel foot over bridge of of span of 24 m of


having a panel length of 3m, subjected to live load of 5 kN/m2. Width of walk way
is 4m. Use ISLB section only. Assume self weight of girder is as 0.5 kN/m.
Thickness of slab as 120 mm, with LL is of 5kN/m2 and FF is 1.0 kN/m2. Use fy =
250 MPa.

3. N- type steel foot over bridge at railway junction is to be design for 28 m span with 4.0
m width. Prepare structural layout and design one cross beam and top chord member
near middle of the span. Assume self weight of girder is as 0.5 kN/m. Thickness of
slab as 120 mm, with LL is of 5kN/m2 and FF is 1.0 kN/m2. Use fy = 250 MPa.
