Assessment FOR learning is the process of seeking and interpreting
evidence for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners
are in their learning, where they need to go, and how best to get there.
(Assessment Reform Group, 2002, p.2)

This assesses content knowledge, disciplinary skills, learning strategies and

attitudes Criterion-referenced. Occurs frequently; before(diagnostic) and
during instruction (ongoing) by teachers, peers and by self. Examples of
assessment for learning are: strategic use of questioning, peer feedback,
student self-assessment, rubrics, checklists.

Assessment AS learning focuses on the explicit fostering of students

capacity over time to be their own best assessors, but teachers need to start
presenting and modelling external, structured opportunities for students to
assess themselves. (Western and Northern Canadian Protocol, p.42)

This assesses content knowledge, disciplinary skills, learning strategies and

attitudes Criterion-referenced. Occurs frequently; before(diagnostic) and
during instruction (ongoing), by peers and by self. Examples of assessment
as learning are: journals, exit cards, entrance cards, rubrics, checklists,
anecdotal descriptions, oral discussions with teachers and peers, graphic
organizers, writing logs for self-assessment.

Assessment OF learning is the assessment that becomes public and results

in statements or symbols about how well students are learning. It often
contributes to pivotal decisions that will affect students futures. (Western
and Northern Canadian Protocol, p.55)

This assesses content knowledge and disciplinary skills and can be both
criterion-referenced and non-criterion-referenced. Often occurs after
instruction at key stages (eg. End of unit or year). Examples of assessment of
learning are: unit tests, exams, portfolios.

Describe the teaching/learning connection between instruction,

feedback and assessment:

I think that instruction, feedback and assessment all play a role within
one another in a students learning. Feedback enables students to
understand their mistakes positively, which allows them to do better on their
next tasks. The students can take the feedback to better themselves in
whatever type of assessment they are being asked to do. The instruction
starts it all where the teacher needs to ensure they are teaching what is
going to be assessed, and that feedback is being received where need be.

How can a teacher use assessment for, as and of learning to

foster ownership of learning, goal setting and achievement:

I think that a teacher can use the three types of assessment to foster
of learning, goal setting and achievement by creating learning goals with
each assignment or task that is given in class. By creating a learning goal,
the students will already know what they are going to be learning, and can
focus on learning that throughout the lesson. The different forms of
assessment can include success criteria, which allows the students to know
what is expected of them.

Why is assessment important?

Assessment is important because it determines if the goals of

education are being met or not. There are many aspects involved in
assessment which can have an affect on decisions about grades, placement,
instructional needs, curriculum, etc. It is so important that students are
assessed throughout their learning to make sure the learning that is ment to
happen is going on, and that the students are actually learning it. Teachers
need to be constantly assessing their students and need to stay up to date
on them, as well as up date on whether there is a better way in doing
something based on what they have assessed. Students need to learn so
much more than just reading, writing, math, science, etc. Teachers need to
be able to adapt and change their teaching styles to match each child, as
well as the society and assessing the students is how one is going to know
whether they are doing a good job or not.

How does it support learning?

Assessment can support learning in different ways. Depending on the

type of assessment, can lead to a different affect of ones learning. For
example, if the assessment is based for a large unit test, I feel the learning
that is going on, is mostly memorization. The students know they need to do
well so they study hard but are worried about their end mark. I feel like this
would lead to a more negative side of learning. However, if the type of
assessment was already known for the students, and they can prepare stress
free, whether they know the material, or the are given a second chance at
things, the students are learning more freely without the worry of marks.
