Countdown to STAAR Division Word Problems
Practice problems (To display on the Elmo)
Lesson:
Display division word problem #1.
o What does the problem want you to do?
o What Information were you given?
Total amount?
Amount in each group?
Number of groups?
o Write the important information needed to find a solution and ignore the rest.
Ex. 530 baseball cards & 5 Friends
Demonstrate for the students how break apart story problems by boxing in the
important information and underline what the problem is asking you to do.
o Next, have the students help you do this on the next problem.
o Finally, have the students complete this themselves and then check together.
Draw a strip diagram to allow students to visualize they are going to need to set up a
division equation with the given information.
o Set up & write equation
Guide students to determine a reasonable estimate for problem #1
o Can each member receive 200 cards? 300? 250? Why or Why not?
Solve the equation using the Area Model (Box Method)
Solve the problem 2 with the help of the class
o Help students pull out the necessary information from the story problems.
o Help students write the correct equation to solve.
o Solve with an Area Model.
Students will then complete the problem number 3 on the Elmo
o Students will solve independently and then the teacher will check afterward.
Students will complete Division Word Problems worksheet independently.
