Functional Description
Functional Description
PWRBlazer Operation
The PWRBlazer is composed of the following major subassemblies:
1 GHz housing assembly
1310/1550 nm optical receiver with 45-870 MHz detection capability
Optional narrowcast receiver
40 to 90 VAC high efficiency switching power supply
Forward RF amplifier with input and interstage pads and equalizers
with three drive ports
Return RF amplifier with three standard inputs and one auxiliary
5-200 MHz input
Optional return path transmitter
The optical receiver, return laser transmitter and power supply are all
located in a field-replaceable lid assembly. RF electronics and power-
passing input and output modules are located in the base of the housing
assembly.
Optical Receivers
Two optical receiver models are available. The GD1D is used for
networks that require a single, broadband receiver or an analog
video/data dual receiver. The GD2AB is used for networks that require
fiber route redundancy.
RF Amplifier
The forward path of the RF amplifier consists of an input hybrid
followed by three power doubler-driven outputs. Equalizer and pad
facilities are provided at the input to each hybrid, with an additional
equalizer slot in common to Ports 2 and 4. All three output ports have a
diplex filter to separate the forward from the return signals. Diplexers
with four frequency splits are available. Directional coupler test points
are at each forward output, immediately following each diplex filter.
The reverse path of the amplifier accepts inputs from each of Ports 2
through 4, as well as a 5 to 200 MHz input from Port 1. Pads can be
installed in each reverse input leg as well as in the common output leg
immediately preceding the return laser. Input directionally-coupled test
points also are available at each leg. Sockets are available for installation
of programmable mute switch attenuators for reverse path ingress
isolation.
Return Laser
The RPT 3234 return path transmitter is an uncooled Fabry-Perot laser
with an output of 4 dBm. This transmitter is ideal for transmission of
information with low data rates, such as status monitoring and set-top
information.
12 Rev. B
Other return path transmitters available for the PWRBlazer include the
RPT 3235, with a 0 dBm distributed feedback (DFB) laser, and the RPT
3236 transmitter, with a +3 dBm cooled DFB laser. These are used in
applications requiring upstream transmission of video signals or high
data rates.
All three transmitters have a 20 dB directional coupler test point to
allow monitoring at the input RF level.
Status Monitoring
Test points are available on the RF module, optical receiver and return
laser for monitoring vital status outputs such as DC voltage, AC voltage,
upstream optical input power level and downstream optical output
level. Connection to these outputs is via a multiple header connector.
An optional Status Monitoring Transponder is available to allow
monitoring and control of the node via Harmonic Lightwaves
NETWatch element management system.
Installation
Receiving and Inspection
As you unpack your unit, inspect the shipping container and equipment
for damage. Save the shipping material for future use.
If the container or the equipment is damaged, notify both the freight
carrier and Harmonic Lightwaves (800/730-4099). To protect the
operator from potential injury, and to protect the equipment from
further damage, do not perform any operational tests.
Installation Tools
DANGER: Invisible laser radiation when open or when operating
with fiber disconnected.
AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE TO BEAM.
The steps in the sections titled Installing the GD1D Receiver Module,
Installing the GD2AB Receiver Module and Installing the Return
Transmitter Module should be performed on a bench, in an indoor
location. The unit can then be closed and transported to the field
location where it is to be installed.
Note that plug-in labels (e.g., "Pad 1") refer to the silk screen on the
appropriate board; test point labels (e.g., "TP 1") refer to the designation
on the cover of the appropriate module.
Figure 3 is a diagram of the RF board of the PWRBlazer with the plug-in
locations identified. A block diagram of the PWRBlazer is shown in
Figure 1.

Installing the GD1D Receiver Module
WARNING: The laser light received and generated within the
PWRBlazer is dangerous. It contains enough energy to
cause permanent damage to the retina of the eye. Take
particular care when connecting fibers to and from the
modules, or when fibers are unconnected within the
stations. There is no visible warning of the energy on
these fibers. Exposure to the direct beam at fiber ends, or
to laser light that might reflect off a shiny surface, is a
potential hazard.
NOTE: Clean all optical connectors and bulkhead adapters. Dirty
connectors and adapters can contribute to many optical-
related problems. See the section on Care and Handling
of Optical Connectors for cleaning procedures. Place the
protective caps on all unused connectors and bulkhead
adapters.
1. Using the 3/8 inch wrench or nut driver, open the housing by
loosening the six bolts. Inspect the plug-in locations on the RF
board and ensure that there is a wire jumper in each location.
2. If it is not open, open the cover of the optics section by loosening
the captive screw and lifting up on the cover near the screw.
18 Rev. B

Lid Closing and Tightening Procedure).
6. Connect the network RF cables to the unit. Power the unit.
7. Measure the AC input voltage on the AC TEST POINT socket on
the RF module. Confirm that it is within the range of 40 to 90 V.
NOTE: A power inserter must be used between the power supply
and the HLR 3830. This will filter out RF noise generated in
the power supply.
8. Using the DC voltmeter, check for proper DC voltage (+24 VDC)
between the DC TEST POINT and GND socket on the RF module.
24 Rev. B
Setting Up the Forward Path (GD2AB)
1. Open the housing by loosening the six bolts. (See section titled
Care and Handling of Optical Connectors.)
2. Ensure that the unit is powered and that a signal is on both the A
and B detectors. Both LEDs on the GD2AB should be green.
3. Measure the DC voltage between both the A and B received power
test point and the ground test point on the GD2AB receiver
module. Table 1 gives the conversion of this voltage to received
optical power. Insure that the received optical power is correct.
4. Set the A/B control switch to the A position.
5. Connect the spectrum analyzer to the 20 dB test point on the
GD2AB. Measure the RF level at the highest frequency. Note this
value.
6. Switch the A/B control switch to the B position.
7. With the spectrum analyzer still connected to the 20 dB test point
on the GD2AB, measure the RF level at the highest frequency.
Note this value.
8. Subtract the level obtained in (7) from the level obtained in step
(5). If the difference is a positive number, install a pad of this value
in the PAD A location on the GD2AB. If the value is negative,
install a pad of the absolute value of this value in the PAD B
location.
9. Ensure that the level on the test point varies by less than 1 dB
when the switch is moved form A and B.
10. Connect the spectrum analyzer to the F connector on the outside of
the housing, which is connected to the FWD2 TP near Port 2.
Measure the RF level at the highest frequency.
11. Add 20 dB to the value obtained in Step 10. Subtract the required
output level from this value. The result is the change in pad value
in dB that should be installed in the PAD 1 location (see Figure
3). Record the new pad value.
12. Install the required pad in the PAD 1 location (see Figure 3). If
necessary, first use the needle nose pliers to remove the wire
jumper from this location.
26 Rev. B

10. Adjust L6 to have a P-V of .5 dB max. between 600 and 750 MHz.
11. Readjust L1, L2, and L6 until P-V is less than .5 dB between 600
and 750 MHz. Rejection below 550 MHz will be a minimum of
18 dB.
12. Connect the voltmeter to TP1 (+) and TP2 (-). The value should be
greater than .5 VDC and the LED on the card should be green.
Slowly separate the RMS connectors until the LED turns red. The
reading on the voltmeter should be .02 .01 VDC.
13. Install a 14 dB pad at J1, verifying that P-V is less than 1 dB
between 600 and 750 MHz. Install a jumper between J1 and J3.
Verify that P-V is less than 1 dB between 600 and 750 MHz. Install
a 10 dB and 15 dB pad at J1.
14. Verify that P-V is less than 1 dB. Slight readjustment of L1, L2, and
L6 may be necessary to keep P-V less than 1 dB for these values of
attenuators. If an adjustment is made, verify that the three values
are within 1 dB P-V.
NOTE: Do not use a 0 dB pad in place of a jumper.

Lid Closing and Tightening Procedure
Always exercise caution when closing and tightening the HLR 3830 lid.
All housing bases have alignment pins that must match holes in the lids
for them to close properly. Improper closing procedure could result in a
lid being stood off on the alignment pins, creating an unsealed lid.
For strand mounted housing, pull the cover away from the base and
remove the slack out of the hinge while rotating the cover up toward the
base. Failure to remove the slack from the hinge can cause the O-ring
(located in the cover flange) to rub against the base casting, causing
damage to the O-ring. This removal of slack also will allow easier
alignment of the pins to their corresponding holes. Inspect the
alignment of the pins by elevating the bucket high enough to allow for
the visual inspection of the top side of the unit.
Inspect the O-rings in the cover flange and on the test port plugs every
time the housing is opened. O-rings that show signs of wear (cracked,
twisted, pinched, or dried out) should be replaced with new, lubricated
O-rings.
It is highly recommended that a torque wrench always be used in any
lid/port plug closing procedure. Tighten the six bolts to 5 ft.-lb. of
torque.
NOTE: Fiber organizers are provided for the arrangement and
proper care of the fiber. Do not overload the organizer.
Trim down any pigtails to the minimum acceptable length
before splicing.
