Introduction

About this Manual

This instruction manual is a complete guide to installing and operating
the PWRBlazer Optical Node (model HLR 3830). Please read the entire
manual before beginning installation. The manual addresses the
assembly and configuration of the node modules, best performed in an
indoor testing area. We recommend that you power and test the fully
configured node as indicated. The manual also addresses mounting the
node in the field and performing the remaining installation steps.

Product Description
The PWRBlazer CATV optical node addresses current needs for high RF
distribution levels, multiple output levels and cost-effective operation, with
future service capabilities. The PWRBlazer includes several modular
components: The basic unit, an optical receiver module and an optional
return transmitter module.
The basic node includes a 1 GHz housing, high-efficiency switching
power supply, fiber organizer and RF amplifier with diplex filters. Two
receiver modules are available: The GD1D-87 has a single broadband
receiver with the capability of adding a digital, high-band receiver. The
GD2AB-87 contains two broadband receivers and an automatic A/B
switch. The latter is ideal for fiber redundant architectures. Both are
available with either SC/UPC or SC/APC (recommended) optical
connectors.

HLR 3830 Optical Receiver Instruction Manual 1

Product Application
The PWRBlazer is a high-performance optical node, allowing operators
to shorten long trunk cascades or feed subscribers directly from a fiber
node. This optical node is intended for fiber-to-the-trunk, fiber-to-the-
feeder, and fiber-to-the-drop applications.
The PWRBlazer optical node accepts either a single broadcast receiver or
a dual broadcast/data receiver, which converts either 1310 nm or
1550 nm optical power to RF with a nominal output level of 45 dBmV.
Output slope and level are controlled using plug-in pads and equalizers.
The optical return path is activated using one of three plug-in laser
transmitters.

Functional Description

Functional Description
PWRBlazer Operation
The PWRBlazer is composed of the following major subassemblies:
1 GHz housing assembly
1310/1550 nm optical receiver with 45-870 MHz detection capability
Optional narrowcast receiver
40 to 90 VAC high efficiency switching power supply
Forward RF amplifier with input and interstage pads and equalizers
with three drive ports
Return RF amplifier with three standard inputs and one auxiliary
5-200 MHz input
Optional return path transmitter
The optical receiver, return laser transmitter and power supply are all
located in a field-replaceable lid assembly. RF electronics and power-
passing input and output modules are located in the base of the housing
assembly.

Optical Receivers
Two optical receiver models are available. The GD1D is used for
networks that require a single, broadband receiver or an analog
video/data dual receiver. The GD2AB is used for networks that require
fiber route redundancy.

HLR 3830 Optical Receiver Instruction Manual 11

The GD1D operates over optical input levels ranging from +3 to 6 dBm
with a 3.7% modulation index. The receiver consists of a PIN diode
detector followed by a hybrid post amplifier. Optical power level is
monitored via a proportional voltage test point (1 V/mW). A 20 dB
directional coupler RF test point is available immediately following the
hybrid post amplifier.
The GD2AB optical receiver consists of two integrated
detector/amplifiers followed by an automatic RF switch. When the
optical input to receiver A is greater than 5 dBm, the RF switch
connects the output from receiver A to the module output. When the
input to receiver A falls below 5 dBm, the switch connects the output
from receiver B to the module output. The module features LEDs to
indicate that the received optical power for both the A and B receivers is
above 5 dBm as well as a 20 dB, directionally-coupled RF test point on
the module RF output.
Both receiver modules are available with SC/UPC or SC/APC
(recommended) optical connectors.

RF Amplifier
The forward path of the RF amplifier consists of an input hybrid
followed by three power doubler-driven outputs. Equalizer and pad
facilities are provided at the input to each hybrid, with an additional
equalizer slot in common to Ports 2 and 4. All three output ports have a
diplex filter to separate the forward from the return signals. Diplexers
with four frequency splits are available. Directional coupler test points
are at each forward output, immediately following each diplex filter.
The reverse path of the amplifier accepts inputs from each of Ports 2
through 4, as well as a 5 to 200 MHz input from Port 1. Pads can be
installed in each reverse input leg as well as in the common output leg
immediately preceding the return laser. Input directionally-coupled test
points also are available at each leg. Sockets are available for installation
of programmable mute switch attenuators for reverse path ingress
isolation.

Return Laser
The RPT 3234 return path transmitter is an uncooled Fabry-Perot laser
with an output of 4 dBm. This transmitter is ideal for transmission of
information with low data rates, such as status monitoring and set-top
information.

12 Rev. B
Other return path transmitters available for the PWRBlazer include the
RPT 3235, with a 0 dBm distributed feedback (DFB) laser, and the RPT
3236 transmitter, with a +3 dBm cooled DFB laser. These are used in
applications requiring upstream transmission of video signals or high
data rates.
All three transmitters have a 20 dB directional coupler test point to
allow monitoring at the input RF level.

Powering the Unit

Any one of the four available RF ports can be used to power the
PWRBlazer. Quasi-square wave inputs from 35 to 90 VAC are
supported. A PSR3 switching power supply supplies DC power. The
total power consumption for the PWRBlazer, including return laser, is
less than 45 W.

Status Monitoring
Test points are available on the RF module, optical receiver and return
laser for monitoring vital status outputs such as DC voltage, AC voltage,
upstream optical input power level and downstream optical output
level. Connection to these outputs is via a multiple header connector.
An optional Status Monitoring Transponder is available to allow
monitoring and control of the node via Harmonic Lightwaves
NETWatch element management system.

Installation

Installation
Receiving and Inspection
As you unpack your unit, inspect the shipping container and equipment
for damage. Save the shipping material for future use.
If the container or the equipment is damaged, notify both the freight
carrier and Harmonic Lightwaves (800/730-4099). To protect the
operator from potential injury, and to protect the equipment from
further damage, do not perform any operational tests.

Installation Tools
DANGER: Invisible laser radiation when open or when operating
with fiber disconnected.
AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE TO BEAM.
The steps in the sections titled Installing the GD1D Receiver Module,
Installing the GD2AB Receiver Module and Installing the Return
Transmitter Module should be performed on a bench, in an indoor
location. The unit can then be closed and transported to the field
location where it is to be installed.
Note that plug-in labels (e.g., "Pad 1") refer to the silk screen on the
appropriate board; test point labels (e.g., "TP 1") refer to the designation
on the cover of the appropriate module.
Figure 3 is a diagram of the RF board of the PWRBlazer with the plug-in
locations identified. A block diagram of the PWRBlazer is shown in
Figure 1.
If you desire any other configuration, contact the factory for installation

WARNING: The laser light received and generated within the
PWRBlazer is dangerous. It contains enough energy to
cause permanent damage to the retina of the eye. Take
particular care when connecting fibers to and from the
modules, or when fibers are unconnected within the
stations. There is no visible warning of the energy on
these fibers. Exposure to the direct beam at fiber ends, or
to laser light that might reflect off a shiny surface, is a
potential hazard.
NOTE: Clean all optical connectors and bulkhead adapters. Dirty
connectors and adapters can contribute to many optical-
related problems. See the section on Care and Handling
of Optical Connectors for cleaning procedures. Place the
protective caps on all unused connectors and bulkhead
adapters.
1. Using the 3/8 inch wrench or nut driver, open the housing by
loosening the six bolts. Inspect the plug-in locations on the RF

CDM-1 Calibration and Alignment Procedure
The CDM-1 is a high-band (600-750 MHz) digital receiver kit for the
GDID-87 receiver modules. The CDM-1 kit includes a receiver plug-in
and a diplex filter for combining the analog and digital information on
the GDID-87 receiver module (see Figure 5).
Test equipment required:
Network analyzer HP8754A or equivalent
A laser transmitter with a bandwidth that extends to at least 750 MHz
DC voltmeter with input resistance of 100,000 ohms or greater
Noyes optical power meter Model OPM1-4 or equivalent
Optical jumper (D4 to AT&T rotary mechanical splice)
AT&T spring clip tool #994A & AT&T B alignment sleeves
Math & Associates coupling gel T1034

DANGER: Invisible laser radiation when open or when operating

with fiber disconnected.
AVOID DIRECT EXPOSURE TO BEAM.
1. All optical connectors should be clean and the AT&T RMS should
be repolished as required.
2. Connect the output of the network analyzer to the laser transmitter.
Install the CDM-1 card.
3. Connect the DC voltmeter to test points (+ to TP1 and - to TP2) and
set to read .001V resolution.
4. Adjust R3 and R4 to their mechanical centers.
5. Turn off the transmitter and adjust R4 until the DC voltmeter reads
>001 +.008/-.001 VDC.
6. Install a 7 dB pad at J1, J3 position. Turn on the laser transmitter
and adjust R3 until the DC voltmeter reads the displayed optical
power in milliwatts of the transmitter .05 VDC. Repeat Steps 5
and 6 until the required reading is obtained without any further
adjustments.
7. Adjust L1 (spreading increases bandwidth) so a roll-off occurs at
approximately 750 to 760 MHz. Adjust L2 for flat response between
600 and 750 MHz (there may be some up slope at this point).
8. Adjust L4 to have a dip in response at 490 to 515 MHz.
9. Adjust L5 to have a dip in response at 550 to 560 MHz.

30 Rev. B
10. Adjust L6 to have a P-V of .5 dB max. between 600 and 750 MHz.
11. Readjust L1, L2, and L6 until P-V is less than .5 dB between 600
and 750 MHz. Rejection below 550 MHz will be a minimum of
18 dB.
12. Connect the voltmeter to TP1 (+) and TP2 (-). The value should be
greater than .5 VDC and the LED on the card should be green.
Slowly separate the RMS connectors until the LED turns red. The
reading on the voltmeter should be .02 .01 VDC.
13. Install a 14 dB pad at J1, verifying that P-V is less than 1 dB
between 600 and 750 MHz. Install a jumper between J1 and J3.
Verify that P-V is less than 1 dB between 600 and 750 MHz. Install
a 10 dB and 15 dB pad at J1.
14. Verify that P-V is less than 1 dB. Slight readjustment of L1, L2, and
L6 may be necessary to keep P-V less than 1 dB for these values of
attenuators. If an adjustment is made, verify that the three values
are within 1 dB P-V.
NOTE: Do not use a 0 dB pad in place of a jumper.

Lid Closing and Tightening Procedure
Always exercise caution when closing and tightening the HLR 3830 lid.
All housing bases have alignment pins that must match holes in the lids
for them to close properly. Improper closing procedure could result in a
lid being stood off on the alignment pins, creating an unsealed lid.
For strand mounted housing, pull the cover away from the base and
remove the slack out of the hinge while rotating the cover up toward the
base. Failure to remove the slack from the hinge can cause the O-ring
(located in the cover flange) to rub against the base casting, causing
damage to the O-ring. This removal of slack also will allow easier
alignment of the pins to their corresponding holes. Inspect the
alignment of the pins by elevating the bucket high enough to allow for
the visual inspection of the top side of the unit.
Inspect the O-rings in the cover flange and on the test port plugs every
time the housing is opened. O-rings that show signs of wear (cracked,
twisted, pinched, or dried out) should be replaced with new, lubricated
O-rings.
It is highly recommended that a torque wrench always be used in any
lid/port plug closing procedure. Tighten the six bolts to 5 ft.-lb. of
torque.
NOTE: Fiber organizers are provided for the arrangement and
proper care of the fiber. Do not overload the organizer.
Trim down any pigtails to the minimum acceptable length
before splicing.

Care and Handling of Optical Connectors
The working surfaces of optical connectors are highly polished and
designed for precision alignment. They must be kept microscopically
clean and free of scratches in order to function optimally. Optical power
readings and signal quality can be seriously compromised if optical
connectors or the bulkheads into which they are inserted are
mishandled or allowed to become dirty.
Optical bulkheads on the transmitters and receivers and the connector
faces of optical cables are shipped with protective caps in place. Do not
remove the caps until ready to make connections. Once a cap is taken
off, do not touch an unprotected connector face or allow dirt to foul the
connector to the bulkhead into which the connector will be inserted.
Even small scratches, minute traces of dirt or skin oils on these surfaces
can degrade signal quality.
After uncapping the connector, use a dry, lint-free lens tissue to gently
wipe the connector face. Too much pressure can damage the delicate
optical surface.
NOTE: To clean the connector tips, use only lint-free lens paper.
Never blow compressed air on connector parts. When you
open a connector, place plastic dust covers on both ends.
