CHAPTER IV. BACKGROUND
Article 4
Human needs of transportation in the world is increasing every year. One of the most
efficient and people favourite transportation is Aircraft. Aircraft requirements is currently
registered increased at the level of 3,8% per year (source : Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia)
The increasing number of passengers automatically take part of increasing the number of
Aircraft production in the world. With this increasing number of aircraft production, a structural
building that is capable to protect the aircraft while not operating is needed.
Hangar is the solution of the requirement of a building that is capable to keep, repair, and
treat the aircraft. Roof Truss of the hangar is one of the vital component on the hangar structure
itself.
On International Roof Truss Competition with Arch Truss Design with Free Horizontal
Element for Hangar Building theme, participants is expected to solve the requirement problem of
aircraft hangar roof truss. On this competition, participant is encouraged to create and design a
hangar roof truss on arch shape with free space component on the lower part of the truss
structure of the aircraft hangar. With the availability of a free space component, we can use the
space as a versatile storage so the structure of the truss will be much more efficient.
International Roof Truss Competition is the innovation form of National Roof Truss
Design which extended in to the international level. This competition will be joined by
Undergraduate Student of Civil Engineering University. Top 15 team will be chosen as finalist
and will be invited to construct, present, and test the truss directly.

Article 13
GENERAL
Roof truss must be formed into arch, meanwhile the under section can be another form
The joint of truss that is allowed only bolt with/without plate.
Outer frame of the truss must be appropriate as the criteria on Article 12
The truss must be constructed effectively as design load
Participant can define the design load by themself but can not be less than 200 kg and can
not be more than 300 kg
Design must be inovative and fulfilled the rules and regulations on Chapter XI
Participants only use wood that committee have prepared except plate and bolt.

Article 14
MATERIAL
The material which is used to construct the truss are wood, plate, and bolt. Wood is used
to construct all of the truss frame including tension bar, compression bar, or zero force
bar. The committee only provide the wood, in addition to it (for example: plate and bolt)
participants are required to provide their own.

12
The wood that is provided is only in the form of beams with 2 meters long and has
dimension of cross-section : 4/3, 3/2, 3/1

The types of wood and its specific gravity :

- Shorea bracteolata Deyr around 0,54 gr/cm3.
- Swietenia macrophylla King around 0,6 gr/cm3.
- Dipterocarpus kunstleri King around 0,80 gr/cm3.
The maximum length/the longest wood that can be used in truss design is 300 mm
(measured from end point to the other end point) so the segment of truss that has span
more than 300 mm must use the joint.
Materials of the joint between the member is bolt with/without plate.
Diameter of the bolt has to appropriate with participants design and can be measured
with structure analysis. Diameter of the bolt which is allowed is no more than 3/8 or
9,525 mm (measured from end point to the other end point).
Maximum length of the bolt is 6 cm (measured from end point to the other end point).
Minimum amount of the bolt which is allowed is 20 pcs.
Plate is made by wood or saw timber. Plate is allowed already in the form and size of
participants design but it has not allowed to make a hole yet.
Nail, glue, string, and wire are prohibited to use by participants.
All materials that participants have prepared will be checked by committe on technical
meeting.

connecting, installing the joint and assembling the truss.
12. If the truss has not done yet until the time limit that has decided, then:
If the outer frame as the figure on Article 12 has not constructed, participant is
considered fail to finish constructing truss
If the outer frame as the figure on Article 12 has constructed, that truss is validated.
13. If the truss does not fulfill the rules and regulations even the criterias that prevail when
the inspection by committee, then committee will give the time tolerance to fix the truss
in 30 minutes (maximum). The time revision is also one of the assessment point.
Participants who do not have to revise their truss will get 100 points, meanwhile
participants who have to revise the truss will get the point based on the revision rapidity.
