4 Overview: About this Manual R2003.16

Landmark EDT Drilling Installation Guide

Quick StartThe Installation Process In a

Nutshell

Engineers Desktop 2003.16 can co-exist with the 2003.14.x version of

Engineers Desktop for Drilling and Completions applications. Make
sure to install into a different directory.

Installation sequence of events is IMPORTANT, and MUST be done in the

following order.

1. First, you must run the Third-Party installation (available on CD

Volumes 5 and 6). If you do not install this first, errors will occur.
Reboot.

2. Next, run the EDM installation (CD Volume 5). Reboot. (EDM
must be installed before Drilling and Completions applications, or
certain services, such as Reporting, will not register correctly.)

3. Finally, run the Drilling and Completions installation (CD Volume

6).

4. If you have an existing EDM database, it must be updated to the

2003.16 or greater version before you can upgrade to 2003.16 (in
any application, click Help > About and check the version number,
if you are not sure.) If your database vintage is pre-2003.5, you
must migrate the data using the Data Migration utility.

Note: Manuals in PDF format that contain details of these procedures

are located on CD Volume 5 in the Products\EDT-
EDM\Documentation folder and CD Volume 6 in the Products\EDT-
Drilling\Documentation folder.

Details of the Drilling installation follow in later sections, but this is the
mandatory sequence of events.

Installing to a Network Location NOT Supported

Installing to a Network Location is NOT supported by Landmark for the

2003.16 release. This installation must be performed from the machine the
installation is taking place on. Placing the installation in a network directory
may cause errors during the install. Windows long file names may truncate
to the 8.3 format due to path length limitations (256 characters) in the
Operating System. This may result in the installation not finding the files.

2. The Landmark splash screen appears. From this splash screen you
can:

select the Engineers Desktop 3rd Party or Drilling

installations

required. However, Landmark strongly recommends that the system be
rebooted prior to running any applications or tools. Some Landmark
applications, tools, and services may not work properly until the system has
been rebooted.

16. See Getting Started on page 49 for and information on using the
applications.

Client Installation Workflow

The Drilling and Completions Client installation copies only the
required system files to the local PCs hard drive and creates shortcuts
to the shared application executable files located in a designated
directory on the Server. This installation includes Drilling and
Completions applications as well as the Engineers Desktop EDM
database and utilities.

Note:

The Drilling and Completions Client installation should not be installed on a

machine where the Server installation is present.

A Client installation can be run on the networked client machine once

the Server installation has been run on the Server machine. This
installation type allows the applications to be run from a central
location (the Server).

Server Installation

When installing the Server option, the EDM installation and the Drilling and
Completions installation must be located on the same machine.

Landmark does not support a Client installation that points to more than one
Server location.

The Client installation files are located on CD Vol 6 Products\EDT-

Drilling\Client.

R2003.16 Drilling and Completions Installation Procedure: Installation 19

EDT Drilling Installation Guide Landmark

The Server directory location must be accessible to the Client machines

to run the installation and to access the Server applications.

Prior to running the Client installation, the Third-Party Components

Installation must be run on the Client machine. Failure to install these
applications prior to running the EDM installation will cause problems
during the installation or when running the applications and tools.

The following workflow describes the step-by-step procedure for

installing the Client.

Important Installation Note!

The person completing the installation MUST be logged in with local

administrator privileges; otherwise programs will fail to install properly.

In addition, when installing from a network location the administrator MUST

have permission to access the network source location. This allows the installation
to restart after a reboot (i.e., to install Microsoft J# .NET Redistribution package
and MSDE).

ALL open programs should be closed prior to the commencement of the

installation, including the Windows Office Toolbar.

On the Server Machine

1. Run the Third-Party installation on the Server machine (see
Third-Party Components Installation on page 9).

2. Run the Engineers Desktop EDM and Drilling and Completions

installs. For detailed instructions on installing EDM see the EDM
Installation Guide and for detailed instructions on installing
Drilling and Completions applications see Stand-Alone and
Server Workflow on page 11).

3. Share the Server installation directory.

On the Client Machine

1. Run the Third-Party installation from the Engineers Desktop
Drilling and Completions Volume 6 CD or a shared network
location (see Third-Party Components Installation on page 9).

2. Run the Client installation from the CD Vol 6 Products\EDT-

Drilling\Client\Setup.exe file.

Understanding Drilling and Completions

Applications

Whats Included in the Installation

The Engineers Desktop Drilling and Completions installation is

contained on Volume 6 Engineers Desktop CD. This CD includes
Landmarks Drilling Engineering and Data Management applications.
Each application available for installation is described below.

Drilling Engineering

CasingSeat
Landmarks CasingSeat application is used to design viable schemes
consisting of casing shoe setting depths and casing sizes. It provides
rigorous shoe selection calculation routines to optimize shoe locations
based on pore pressure, fracture gradients, and user-defined design
constraints. It features inventory-based management of permissible
hole and casing size combinations. The application provides layer- and
lithology-based characterization of subsurface boundary conditions and
operating constraints, including those associated with wellbore
stability, minimum overbalance, and differential sticking.

CasingSeat is fully integrated with StressCheck, enabling a precise

engineering workflow for more detailed design and stress load analysis
of the casing design.

COMPASS
The COMputerized Planning and Analysis Survey System, is a
comprehensive software tool used by oil companies and directional
drilling contractors for directional well design and construction.
COMPASS offers a fast and accurate means of well planning and
identification of potential directional drilling or anti-collision problems
at the earliest possible stage. It includes all the features required for
complex well trajectory design, survey and anticollision monitoring,

R2003.16Whats Included in the Installation: Understanding Drilling and Completions Applications 41

EDT Drilling Installation Guide Landmark

and analysis. COMPASS also includes tools for survey data

management, multiple planning methods, torque-drag optimization,
anti-collision plotting and analysis, and platform optimization.

StressCheck
Landmarks StressCheck application is the first graphics-based casing
design product for Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP
platforms. It incorporates an array of attributes to enable the user to
quickly, systematically, and accurately evaluate casing wear limits,
minimum cost design, and working-stress design for burst, collapse,
axial installation, and service-life load cases.

StressCheck is based on casing design principles that are broadly

accepted and employed in the petroleum industry. CasingSeat and
StressCheck are referred to as Tubular applications.

WELLPLAN
WELLPLAN is Landmarks drilling engineering analysis system
designed for use at the rig site and the office to provide both well
planning and operations analysis. The different engineering modules of
WELLPLAN are seamlessly integrated and address aspects of data
collection, analysis, well planning, and modeling.

WELLPLAN can be used to improve well designs, prevent stuck pipe

and BHA failures, prevent drilling problems, and essentially drill the
right wells the first time at a lower cost. General well information is
entered through common editors to enable basic Case data components
to be entered (e.g., wellbore editor, string editor, fluid editor, and
survey editor). These editors are generally available in most
WELLPLAN modules depending on which module or mode of
analysis is being used. Additional data required for particular analyses
are entered using editors available within each analysis module (e.g.,
Torque/Drag Actual Loads, Cement Job Editor, etc.).

Data Management

OpenWells
Landmark's latest Drilling, Completions, Well Services and
Construction and Reclamation operations reporting application,
OpenWells, is a fully integrated and comprehensive, communications,

42 Whats Included in the Installation: Understanding Drilling and Completions Applications

Landmark EDT Drilling Installation Guide

analysis and corporate engineering information data management

system. It is used to capture data for drilling, completions, well services
and construction and reclamation operations.

Wellsite operations reporting offers a new look and feel by taking

advantage of the flexibility of a new Java-based architecture and
Landmark's Engineers Data Model (EDM) to provide integration
between Landmark Drilling, Well Services, and Production
applications. OpenWells shares a common database with CasingSeat,
StressCheck, COMPASS, WELLPLAN, PROFILE, Data Analyzer,
Real-Time View and iWellFile. All products are supported with the
same Data Management, Navigation, Security, Data Synchronization,
Unit Management, and Reference Datum Levels architectures provided
by the Engineers Data Model platform. Consistent user interface
components and methods have been implemented wherever possible
between all Engineers Desktop Drilling and Completions applications
to provide the user with a consistent experience across the suite.

You can configure this fully customizable application to meet the

specific needs of a company through customizable Data Entry Forms,
Preview Panes, Output Reports, and the Unit Management System.

PROFILE

PROFILE allows the user to view the wellbore equipment

configuration at any stage in the life of the well. It provides rapid
access and review of detailed well operations information for more
accurate decision making and improved reporting. PROFILE also
enables engineers to design any number of planned Completions which
can later be used to populate operations Reports in OpenWells.
OpenWells and PROFILE can be used concurrently to give immediate
visual feedback, thus ensuring data integrity and facilitating improved
data quality. This improved workflow efficiency can reduce cycle time
and simplify the production of wellbore schematics.

Data Analyzer
Data Analyzer provides an easy-to-use, powerful tool for Engineers
Desktop Drilling and Completions users, which assists them in gaining
maximum value from their data. Data Analyzer provides all user levels
the ability to quickly and easily build simple and complex adhoc
queries against drilling and well services data. Ad-hoc queries can be
generated, with the user selecting from the same user-defined labels
and data input structure that they are familiar with.

A visualization and analysis tool used by engineers and geologists for
viewing time-based drilling data logs for any selected Well, Event,
Report or Activity. The Real-Time View tool is integrated into
OpenWells and uses the WITSML standard to import Log and Real-
time data into EDM via OpenWire. Real-Time View is provided with a
rich set of editing tools to allow customized templates to be created for
almost any layout.

Tools and Utilities

Catalog Editor
(Drilling) Catalogs are used as a selection list to design a casing,
tubing, liner or drillstring. Read-only system catalogs are distributed
with the software. Additional custom catalogs can be created that will
allow changes. A catalog can be copied and pasted (including read-only
catalogs); copied catalogs are editable and can be customized. Custom
catalogs are useful because the catalog content can be customized to
the available pipes or other drilling products used by the company. A
catalog can be locked to prevent changes. You can also merge catalogs.
The Catalog Editor application allows you to edit the catalog selected
in the Well Explorer.

EDM Administration
The EDM Administration Utility is used to configure and implement
database settings from a single location for all the applications. This
prevents future duplication of information. The following operations
can be performed using the EDM Administration Utility:

Create and customize EDM Output Reports (you must purchase

Crystal Reports 9 to create EDM Output Reports), System
Settings, and Unit Management Sets

Create and customize OpenWells Data Entry Forms, Preview

Panes, Shortcut Bars, OpenWells Carryovers, Report Types, Job
Types, and Status Colors

EDM Publishing Service

The EDM Publishing Service is a application that enables automated or
manual generation of OpenWells Reports in printed (hard copy) or
electronic (.PDF) format.

EDM Services Controller

The EDM Services Controller runs in the Windows System Tray and
enables EDM Services to be configured, started, stopped, and restarted.
The following Services are managed by the EDM Services Controller:
LGC EDM Data Receiver (Email), LGC EDM Data Receiver (File
System), LGC EDM Simultaneous Activity Monitor (SAM), and LGC
EDM Publishing.

EDM to OpenWorks Link

EDM-OpenWorks Link is a tool that enables users to map wells in the
selected EDM database to projects in the selected OpenWorks
database. This association between databases is called mapping. For
this release of EDM-OpenWorks Link, the mapping is enabled in one
direction only: EDM to OpenWorks.

Field Office Data Transfer

The Field Office Data Transfer application is used to transfer the
database hierarchy, wells, wellbores, events, and reports between EDM
databases. It also has an option to import and export site and picklist
metadata information. Data can be sent through the LAN or through
Dial Up Networking. Data can be transferred through Email or FTP.
Two Windows Services must be run in the background for the receiving
EDM database: Email Watcher (LGC EDM Data Receiver (Email)),
and Data Receiver (LGC EDM Data Receiver (File System)). A
dedicated PC is normally used for this purpose. Email Watcher scans
the recipient's email for attached data transfer files. Once a file is
received, it is moved to the receiving directory. When using FTP, the
data is ftpd to the receiving directory. The Data Receiver service
monitors for newly imported files in the receiving directory and
automatically uploads the data transfer file contents into the EDM
database. Additionally, the Field Office Data Transfer allows for Status
updates, so when data is sent the sender can come back at a later time

R2003.16Whats Included in the Installation: Understanding Drilling and Completions Applications 45

EDT Drilling Installation Guide Landmark

and update the status information, which grabs the log file on the
receiver and updates the sender with the current status of the transfer.
The Field Office Data Transfer application also contains a Well
Explorer, from which you can Import or Export, create nodes, edit
properties, etc., as you can in the other EDM applications.

MSDE Administration
Use the EDM MSDE Administration Utility to perform the following
functions:

Install MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine) if it is not

present on the local machine
Create a blank copy of the EDM database
Attach an EDM database file to MSDE
Create two default users for new MSDE databases:
username: EDM, password: landmark
(default application user)
username: edmadmin, password: landmark (administration
user who can create other users).

PSA CDRS Report Generator

The PSA CDRS Report Generator generates information on daily
drilling activities from OpenWells and uses this information to create
specially formatted ASCII data files, Common Daily Drilling Report
System (CDRS). Theses files can then be sent to the Norwegian
Petroleum Safety Authority to be added to their Drilling Data
repository.

Rig Editor
The Rig Editor exposes the Well Explorer Contractor hierarchy. This
hierarchy contains a tally of rigs, work units and their rig equipment
and records Air Packages and Rig Operations. The Rig Editor is used to
browse, open, copy, delete, and manage Contractors, Air Packages,
Rigs, Rig Operations and Equipment.

Symbol Manager
The Symbol Manager Utility included with PROFILE enables fully
comprehensive symbol management with a portable symbol file
format, and provides highly detailed multi-dimensional symbols with

cutaways and a rich set of equipment section types. This utility allows
users to modify provided symbols, or create their own custom symbols.

Unit Converter
Use the Unit Converter application to convert a data value from one
unit system to an equivalent unit system based on unit types
(categories) defined in the database.

EDM Report Manager

This application is used to view, save, and send Output Reports created
with the EDM Administration Utility, and is available to the OpenWells
and COMPASS applications.

Landmark plans to implement this Report Manager in other Engineers

Desktop applications in future releases.

The Well Explorer can be used with each of the Drilling and Data
Management applications. It is located by default on the left side of the
application window. The Well Explorer functions much like the
Microsoft Windows Explorer, and is organized as a hierarchical data
tree, which can be used to browse the EDM Drilling data hierarchy at
all levels. It can perform data management tasks, such as creating or
modifying data objects, and is used to open engineering data sets for
analysis.

Well Explorer in COMPASS

Well Explorer in COMPASS is similar to Well Explorer in other
applications in that you can use its Browser Window, located on the top
right section of the window, to navigate the EDM database at several
descending levels. The COMPASS version of Well Explorer contains
additional functionality required by a directional well planning and
survey data management application.

The COMPASS version of the Well Explorer is a combined browser

and status window for navigating, managing, and launching
COMPASS data. It is divided into three sections. The section located
on the left of the window is the Status Window. The top right section
of the window is the Browser Window, the bottom right section of the
window is the Associated Data Viewer, and located above these three
sections is a picklist, Recent, containing a selection list of locations
within the tree that have been opened recently. The COMPASS version
of Well Explorer is always available. It can be minimized, but cannot
be closed.

58 Understanding the Well Explorer: Getting Started R2003.16

The COMPASS version of the Well Explorer allows for navigation

down to the Design level in EDM. To open the Design level, double-
click on the Design icon ( ), or use the right-click menu and select
Open.

Double-click any level within the browser to open the next available
item in the hierarchy. The selected item will be reflected in the Status
window. The available functionality in the menu and tool bars is
dependent on which level is open in the browser. Full functionality will
only occur if the lowest level in the hierarchy (i.e., Design level) is
open.

When a Design is open, the user can access planning functionality

through the Planning menu, survey functionality through the Survey
menu, and anti-collision functionality through the Anticollision menu.

Concurrency and Multi-User Support

Release 2003.16 of the Engineers Desktop supports full concurrency

for multiple applications using the same data set through the
Simultaneous Activity Monitor (SAM). The Simultaneous Activity
Monitor consists of a Messaging Server. This server notifies a user of
all data items currently open by other applications sharing the same
database. SAM does not indicate what its own application is doing; it is
merely a messenger service that monitors other applications that share
an EDM database.

Each database must be configured to use its own SAM server.

Users wishing to run SAM against a local database must install EDM in
Stand-Alone mode (see the EDM Installation Guide, Stand-Alone
Server Workflow). This installation method will install the LGC EDM
Simultaneous Activity Monitor service to run locally on the machine
and manage the local database instance.

SAM in the Application Status Bar

The SAM icon appears in the application Status Bar as follows:

Message Description
A green SAM icon in the status bar indicates that the
Messenger Service is active. If a tooltip is available, the
message "SAM-Connected" will be displayed.

A green SAM icon with a red X on it indicates that the

Messenger Service is not currently active. If a tooltip is
available, the message "SAM-Disconnected" will be
displayed.

A red SAM icon in the status bar indicates the SAM service
is enabled but has lost connectivity. Hover over the icon to
display the tooltip "SAM - No longer responding"

No icon When no icon appears in the application status bar, this

indicates that the Simultaneous Activity Monitor has not
been configured for the application.

R2003.16 Concurrency and Multi-User Support: Getting Started 61

EDT Drilling Installation Guide Landmark

SAM in the Well Explorer

If a data item is open, one of the following icons will appear on the
node icon.

Icon Description
A red SAM icon indicates that one or more users on other PCs have
this item open, and the current user is restricted to read-only access.

A blue SAM icon indicates that one or more users on the current
database have this item open, but the current user still has full read-
write access. A user must be careful when making changes to the
data, though this method enables data to automatically flow
between applications. Intentional updates to other live applications
should be anticipated before saving changes.

The first user to open a data item becomes the data item's owner. They
will 'own' the data until they have completed any changes, saved the
data item, and closed it. When another user opens the data item through
an EDM application, they can see that the data item is currently being
accessed by the first user, the owner. This other user can access the data
item but will be unable to save any changes until the owner has closed
it.To view a list of users, applications, and machines that have the data
item open, hover the mouse over the item; a data listing tooltip will
appear.

In COMPASS, WELLPLAN, CasingSeat and StressCheck, SAM

appears over any open Designs to signify that the Design is open by
other users. As OpenWells does not display the Design level of the Well
Explorer, SAM appears over the Wellbore, which contains the open
Design. To determine which users have the data set open, hover the
cursor over the SAM icon appearing in the Well Explorer; a list of users
and machine names accessing the Design is displayed along with the
users current permissions.

62 Concurrency and Multi-User Support: Getting Started R2003.16

Landmark EDT Drilling Installation Guide

For each application instance that is accessing the data item, the tooltip
displays the user name (Windows account), EDM application, machine
name, and flags to indicate the type of access available to the current
user.

RW - indicates that the current user has read-write access

RO - indicates that the current user has read-only access

When a node is created, deleted, or its properties have changed, the

Well Explorer tree is automatically updated for all other users.

SAM support in OpenWells also includes open Data Entry Forms,

Survey Headers, and Well Planning information shared with
WELLPLAN. For more information, see the OpenWells on-line help.

Reload Notification
A reload notification dialog appears when the owner of the active data
item saves changes to the database. SAM then notifies any other EDM
applications of the changes. The change notification dialog is then
offered to the user to reload or ignore the data owner's changes, or
cancel the dialog box. The dialog that appears displays the user name
for the owner and the application in which the changes were made. This
enables the user to identify the source of the change that has been
posted.

Reload
The Reload option results in the owner's changes being uploaded into
the current application.

Ignore
The Ignore option gives the user the ability to ignore the owner's
changes and continue working with their current data item.

R2003.16 Concurrency and Multi-User Support: Getting Started 63

EDT Drilling Installation Guide Landmark

The user may choose to ignore the updates if they own the data item in
another application.

In this instance they may choose to save later and overwrite changed
data in the other application as a result.

The user with read-only access to the data item may choose to ignore
the owner's changes in order to continue looking at the previous state of
the data. They may also perform a Save As operation in order to save
the current data before reloading the changes. WELLPLAN does not
support Save As functionality for read-only access.

Use the Do not ask the question again checkbox to avoid receiving
any other reload notifications. This checkbox option is not remembered
between sessions. If the user restarts an application, they must activate
the checkbox the first time it appears in order to stop the appearance of
the reload notifications.

Cancel
The Cancel option gives the user the opportunity to cancel the dialog. If
this option is selected the Do not ask the question again checkbox is
ignored.

Online Help

How to use Online Help

The Engineers Desktop uses two types of online help for each
application. Most online help formats are shipped using Microsoft
HTML Help. Online help can be accessed from the applications menu
bar or by using the F1 key to access context-sensitive help.

Using Microsoft HTML Help

Microsoft HTML Help is an online Help system that is based on the
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) format. HTML Help is
comprised of a single .CHM file. This file launches the tri-pane HTML
Help Viewer. The three panes are as follows:

The toolbar pane is used to navigate back and forward through

topics, print topics, and Show/Hide the HTML topics.

The navigational pane is used to navigate a Table of Contents

(Contents tab), a list of key words (Index tab), and online glossary
items (Glossary tab).

The topics pane is used to display the various topics in HTML

format.

Using WebHelp
WebHelp is also an online Help system that is based on the HTML
(Hypertext Markup Language) format. WebHelp also contains a similar
tri-pane layout to HTML Help, but it is an uncompiled help system.
This uncompiled Help system supports a variety of browsers and
platforms. WebHelp features include: a table of contents, an index, a
glossary, and full-text search. WebHelp is compatible with most
browsers.
