Vox Populos Pro

Installation: contains two plugins. Vocoder-Insert Effekt and

Vocoder VST Instrument !!

Start Setup.exe. It will make a directory in: c:\Programme\ Tubeohm\Vocoder with the
subdirectories \Analyse \Bank \ syntheses \ manual.
In \Analyse and Synthese you find all factory samples, in \bank you find the factory sound bank.
In manual you find this manual.
Be sure that you have this directory's , don't move it, because Vox-P looks for the factory-samples
only in this directory's.

Then the installer asks for the path to install the Vocoder-Insert .DLL and
Vocoder-Instrument.DLL.
For example c:\programme\VST-Host\vstplugins
Choose the path.
Then you have installed TubeOhm Vocoder.

After starting the VST-Host you get a registration window. Without registration you can use Vox-P
30 days . After 30 days it switches down.
If you want a registration code, please select WWW.TUBEOHM.COM

4
E Mail address is : Kontakt@Tubeohm.com
After payment with PAYPAL we will send you the registration code within 24h.

First steps, tips and tricks

-before you begin to play, please read the MANUAL, i have write it extra for you -!

This are the first words you hear after installing the VOX POPULUS software.

I know that only a few people read the manual, the rest is learning by doing. But if you want to use
the full potential of the Vocoder you need the basics.

Vocoder-insert effect !

The basics is, how you make working syntheses samples, what make sense, what not.

What happened with speak samples ?

How i can use external audio tracks ?

Ok, we begin:

First of all, the vocoder INSERT EFFECT needs an audio track to work.
With the Instrument you can work like a normal VST Instrument.
Choose at first the Vocoder as an insert effekt.

If you look in you VST Instrument folder, you find the INSTRUMENT!!!!

For example: Take an empty stereo audio track in you vst host prog. Choose insert effect is ' VOX-
Populus'.

Open a MIDI track, choose Vox Populus insert in a midi track.

Now you can play with an external keyboard while Vox P is vocoding the audio track .

You hear the first sample from the internal analyse sampler.-before you begin to play,...

If you want to vocode you own audio track, open the IN-Select Matrix, switch the analyse
sampler off and switch the input from 'INT' to 'EXT-M'. ( intern / extern-mono )

Now the audio track routes to the analyse input from the vocoder.

You get the best results to vocoded -speak / singing- if you have a dry input signal or sample.
Dry means the analyse( speak/sing ) signal without effects like reverb, delay, chorus !

You can add it after vocoding .

5
The syntheses synth has two possibilities, work as a synthesizer or work as a sampler.
If it works as a synthesizer , it gives out normal waveforms like square, saw , pulse...
The osz can be stacked 7 times and detune. So per single voice you have 7 Osz . ( super saw )

With 'synth' mode you have the standard vocoder sounds by using one osz per voice, or singing
strings if you use detuned 7 osz per voice. Check it out.

The sampler unit in the SYNTHESES SYNTH allows you to load your own samples for testing
how it sounds.
Click on the yellow FILE Icon, choose a sample , move the text switch from synthesizer to
sampler.
By programming Vox Populus i have learn, that not all samples are good for sound design.

A trick is, if you make your own samples, add high noise to the sample.
The vocoder gives the best results if it has a rich overtone-spectrum for syntheses.

You can do it with high noise in a sample, or record a basic C3 and C4 note.

Bass sounds or deep sounds without a high frequency spectrum don't work good.

For this kind of sounds I have build in the O-Tone Knob. It distorts the Sample and adds
overtones to it.

But better is it to have a good rich overtone sample.

6
TubeOhm Vocoder Vox Populus

In this plug-in 68 filters ,17 envelopes, 48 oscillators, 300 switches ,2 delays, and much more do the
sound work.

> 17 filter filter bank

> monitoring of the syntheses signal
> Overtone controller for analyse-synth/sampler, syntheses sampler and ext. syntheses input
> three effects, chorus, reverb, BPM sync delay
> LFO for pitch-control the syntheses synthesizer/sampler

Before you start , please take a short look into the manual. Vox Populus can make a lot of good
sounds but also , without a good knowing' - sound trash

Please read:distortions and intermodulations

Distortions: comes if the VU-Meters in the red area. Reduce at first the master Vocoder out,
than the channel outputs.
Mostly distortions came if the vocoder master volume is to high.

Intermodulations: if the attack and release Filter time is to short, the analyse control voltage gives
frequency ripples to each syntheses filter. For drum sounds it is no problem, but for a singing voices
in the 3..4 Octave it can give intermodulations.

Important: if you use words for analyse , move the attack and release time to 30 % of its
maximum.

7
Start

What does a vocoder do, and how ?

A vocoder needs two different signals, one analyse signal and one syntheses signal.
Example : analyse signal is a voice, syntheses signal is a polyphony synthesizer sound.
Result: a speaking synthesizer sound.

Vox Populus has two filter banks with 17 Filter for each bank.

The first, the analyse filter bank generates the amplitude from each of 17 filter and generate 17
times a control voltage.
The 17 voltages control the output volume of each syntheses filter.
Short: the analyse bank add its overtone spectrum to the syntheses bank.

Filter attack and release can adjust, how fast the control voltage follows the analyse signal.
For vocals take a little bit slower attack/release time than for drum-samples.

8
Insert effect / Instrument - two different PLUGINS

The Vocoder Plugin comes as an insert effect and as an Vocoder VST instrument !

Both have the same engine but work in another way.

VST Insert effekt

If you want to vocode your own Audio track, use the INSERT EFFEKT. With it you can route
audio streams ( *.wav samples or live with the mic ) into the vocoder and manipulate it !
The insert effekt needs an audio track or a direct input signal for working and recording !
Recording only the Vocoder output without an audiotrack/direct signal is in some vst hosts not
possible. If you want tu use the Vocoder a synth, use the VOCODER INSTRUMENT

INSERT EFFEKT

Vocoder VST Instrument

By programming I found , that the vocoder is very useful for generate organic synthesizer
sounds.
So I disable only the IN MATRIX. You can use the internal samplers / synth to generate sounds
and play and record it. Using external sounds is with the Vocoder Instrument not possible.

VST INSTRUMENT

9
Using the Vocoder as an INSERT EFFECT: Open a stereo audio track on your VST host
program.
Add the vocoder as an insert effect.

Open the same vocoder in a midi track. So you can play with an external keyboard while the
vocoder works on the audio track. MIDI-record and play with the host prog is possible.

Make a voice singing. ( first intern )

a:) load a voice sample into the analyse sampler, press play.( in select matrix )
b:) switch to oscillator mode in syntheses sampler - 7 voices and detune 50 %
c:) syntheses and analyse VU Meters OK. Master V-OUT loud ?
d:) press the keys on the keyboard.
e:) play with filter attack/release. ( longer release ) You hear that speaking words begin to sing.
f:) for better understanding move the O-TONE knob in analyse synthesizer.

Than extern
You can use an external signal by switching to the input Matrix. Choose EXT-M via selector.
Now a stereo voice from a stereo audio channel is route into the analyse section of the vocoder.
Switch off the analyse sampler !

For good vocoding use waveforms or samples with a lot of high overtone spectrum.
Help gives the O-Tone knob. It adds more overtones to the syntheses signal.

If you will use only the internal sounds without extern Voice vocoding, open the Vocoder as an
Instrument.

10
Vox Populus overview

This is the basic user panel !

11
Input modul

IN adjust the input volume of the analyse-signal. The yellow VU meter shows
the analyse amplitude. ( intern and extern )

O-TONE add only to an extern syntheses signal overtones/distortions.

SYNTHESES adjust the input volume of the syntheses-signal. The blue VU meter shows
the syntheses amplitude. ( intern and extern )

12
Analyse / syntheses Matrix

The analyse / syntheses Matrix contains one frequency-shifter,-shift the syntheses filter +/-1 Okt
the VU meters for each analyse filter ( yellow) and
the VU meters for each syntheses filter ( blue ).

There is a attack/ release bank. Attack changes the attack time for all filters-control voltages,
release can adjust all filter -control voltages or, if the buttons are off, you can adjust the release for
each filter control voltage separate.

You can switch all filters from 12dB to 24 dB to manual. If the text over the manual knob shows
MAN, the filter dB can be adjust with the MANUAL knob.

Also there is the voice/unvoiced detector and the volume adjust for each filter.

13
SINGLE MODULE

Frequency SHIFT

Switch on > with the button over the SHIFT Knob

.
Frequency shift adjust all syntheses filter +/- 1 octave up or down.

So we can adjust a 'man' voice to a ' woman' voice or to a 'children' voice

Single channel

One channel contains the analyse/syntheses VU meters, one single release on /off switch, the
release knob and the level adjust.
Under the level adjust are two numbers. First =300 means that the analyse filter works with 300
Hz. Second= 300 means that the control voltage from ( fix ) 300 HZ analyse filter controls the
amplitude of the ( variable )300 Hz syntheses filter. ( more in filter matrix )

14
Attack / release bank

Default = all buttons on !

Controls the attack / release time of the analyse control voltage.

Single-Release: if button is off, the knob control a single filter release. If on, Master-Release
controls the Filter.

Long release make from spoken word a singing word. If the release time is long, you get a moving
synthesizer sound.

Attack: adjust the attack time of all analyse control voltages.

Nice for drums and percussions.

In this example all release switches on, so the complete 17 release are controlled with the
MASTER RELEASE.

Filter control

Over the textpannel ( MAN ) are 2 switches (up/down). By pressing the one of switches all filters
change from 12db to 24 dB ( default )to MAN = manual mode.

If the textpannel is in MAN mode , all filters can be adjust with the MANUAL knob from 12 db to
48 dB.

If MANUAL = max ,it sounds very electronic ( high resonanz ). reduce the MASTER or Channel
volume if you have distortions.

15
Voice/Unvoiced Detector

The voice/unvoiced detector detect unvoiced vocals like --- ss,sch,zz fff, ch-- and substitute it with
noise. It is mixed into the vocoder signal in two ways.

first: Button is on, V/UV works. Mix/O is minimum =0, noise =50%, SENS =minimum.
If the V/UV detect a UV signal, the vocoder signal mutes and only the noise is send
to master. The result is a better speak understanding.
This works also with drum samples. If the hihat plays you get a rhythmic noise

second: Button is on V/UV works. Mix/O is maximum , noise =50%, SENS =minimum.
Now the noise is mixed 50% with the vocoder signal.

Button V/UV on/off

SENS sensitivity , default = minimum, for normal speak.

NOISE the noise volume
MIX/O mix-output the muting level between noise level and vocoder signal level if UV is
detect.

16
Output modul

The output modul contains

(1) the direct output control for the extern or intern syntheses signal if button is on
(2) the dynamic mute function between dry analyse signal and vocoder signal.
(3) than there is the output routing for the dry analyse signal.
(4) Mix between analyse and vocoder syntheses signal
(5) the output control for only the vocoder syntheses signal.

Button over SYNTH>> = output Syntheses signal on/off

SYNTH>> ( switch button on )controls the direct output volume from the intern
syntheses synth /sampler or ext. syntheses Voice
If Mix=0, vocoder output =0 and SYNTH>> is maximum, only the
syntheses signal is route out.
A-CRL A-CRL is on , the dry analyse signal goes direct to output if no syntheses
signal is there. That means for example. If you don't play the
keyboard there is no syntheses signal. So the vocoder has nothing to do. The
output modul routes the analyse input signal via a chosen effect (textpannel )
to the output.
The level can be adjust with the MIX knob.

Now you begin to play. With the THRESHOLD level you can adjust,at what
syntheses signal level the output switched from analyse signal to vocoder
signal.

17
EXAMPLE: analyse signal is spoken text. With the A-CRL function you can
vocode single words by playing the keyboard.

THRESHOLD at what syntheses input level it switch to vocoder signal.

V-OUT slider controls only the vocoder signal output.

MIX mixed the analyse signal output direct ( if A-CRL is off), or dynamic if
A-CRL is on, to a chosen effect via textpannel.

TEXTPANNEL routes the analyse signal to >> master out, delay, chorus, reverb. In
connection with MIX.

enhanced adjustment / choice menus

Now we come to the specials:

The vocoder has four additional sub menus to adjust the vocoder sound.

1) the IN SELECT MATRIX

2) the FILTER MATRIX
3) the FINE-TUNE MATRIX
4) the LIVE MATRIX

It can be switched on with this buttons.

all buttons off = main menu

18
IN select / only possible in INSERT EFFEKT

INPUT SELECT contains the routing for the intern/extern signal and the ANALYSE Sampler.
With the selector text panel you can route the input signals

In the left channel you can route one external voice signal as an analyse signal from your VST host
program into the vocoder.
In the right channel you can route an extern syntheses signal from your VST host program.

X-CR changes the left with the right channel.

INT uses only the internal SOUND GENERATORS for analyse/syntheses. Ext inputs
switched off.
EXT M EX TERN MONO left and right is mixed together .( If you have stereo Vocals it
mixed to mono).Send to analyse input.

EXT S EX TERN STEREO - right is the ex tern analyse signal, left is the extern syntheses
signal .

If you use extern analyse signals be sure that you have the ANALYSE SAMPLER OFF by
switching PLAY to STOP.

In the INPUT MATRIX diagram you see, that this O-TONE in the INPUT MODUL only works
with an external analyse signal.

19
Analyse Sampler

If you play just for fun, or use the vocoder as a synth or check your own samples, use the
ANALYSE SAMPLER.

With the FILE- ICON open the file browser.

Double click loads a wave sample. Than press the play button . It changes from STOP to PLAY.

If you move the MIX knob in the output modul, you can hear the dry sound.
Move MIX to 0, Press the keyboard and you hear the vocoder sound .

WAV-File Icon opens the file browser

Play/Stop (PLAY)= plays the sample ( STOP )= end playing

OKT/SEMI/Fine tune of the sample +/- 3 okt ,11 half-tones and fine-tune

Attack/Rel attack time and release time.

O-Tone distorts the sample

Volume Output volume.

20
The Filter matrix

Normally analyse filter (100 Hz) controls the syntheses filter (100 Hz).
With the filter matrix the analyse filter can control different syntheses filter.

So , for example, the A 100 Hz filter can controls the S 4200 Hz filter or other S Filter.
The A 200 HZ filter can control S 1000 Hz filters , and so on.

It is also possible , that one Syntheses filter is controlled by two or more analyse filter in the same
time.
Example. A 300 HZ, A 400 HZ and A5200 HZ control S 500 Hz

Move the mouse cursor to one blue circle. Press the left button and hold it. Move the mouse
up or down.
Alternative move the mouse to the syntheses Hz textpannel. Press mouse-button and hold it. Move
the mouse up or down.

The syntheses textpannel shows you the actual controlled frequency.

21
Filter fine tune

With the FINE TUNE MATRIX all filters ( analyse and syntheses )can adjust 30% up or down
from its middle frequency. Reset knob set all to default.

example
100 Hz from 70-130 Hz
150...
1000 Hz from 700-1300 Hz
1200...
7000 Hz from 4900-9100 Hz

and so on.

This allows a fine tune. It is not a great effect but gives a better frequency control in some cases.

22
LIVE MATRIX

Click on the red circle , hold it, and move the mouse.

With the LIVE Matrix you can record and play the movement in an X/Y matrix and control
the parameters :Filter Shift: -Filter Release: -Pitch/Semitones for syntheses Synth
Record time chose by the red triangle (with the mouse left and right = left short 10 s, right 1
minute )

Move direction select for shift, release and pitch.

There are two circles . The red one, and the blue one. The blue one follows the red circle fast, if
SMOOTH is minimum =0, or slow if SMOOTH is max.

The blue circle gives out two control voltage. X and Y. Middle is 0 .Now you can ' switch on' the
FILTER SHIFT .

Result. You can control FILTER SHIFT with the x or y way ( Control voltage ) from the matrix.

The same with the FILTER RELEASE , and the PITCH MODULATION .

If all switches off, only semi works.

If SEMI is not =0, you can pitch the SYNTHESES synti up or down with the shown semitones.
Example: SEMI =2 means , MATRIX minimum=-2 semitones, MATRIX maximum +2
semitones

I hope it is very easy to use the LIVE MATRIX.

DEFAULT: BLUE STOP and REC RED.

In this mode you can play with the red circle. The blue follows
the red with 'SMOOTH ' time.

23
ON/OFF FILTER SHIFT: switch FILTER-SHIFT on/off. The Knob controls the
sensitivity.
ON/OFF FILTER RELEASE switch FILTER RELEASE on/off. The Knob controls the
sensitivity.

Same with pitch. If PITCH is on, SEMI don't work !

Lets start to record.

FIRST set all to DEFAULT.

Default: STOP= blue , REC= red, Time 20s. FILTER SHIFT, FILTER RELEASE and PITCH
button on. All knobs to maximum.

Move the red circle and play with the keyboard. You hear the the sound changing.

Now press STOP blue to RUN=red.

The BUTTONS show now >> RUN RECORD << means , record run now.
All moves with the red circle now recorded until the blue record meter reach the red little triangle.
Than the record stops.

Press REC=red to PLAY=blue

The buttons shows now >>> RUN PLAY <<. means, now it plays what you have record.
The blue circle moves in a loop. If you press STOP- RUN again, the sample starts from its
beginning. ( interesting for sync a sample.)

Only the control voltage is record, not *.wave files.

You can adjust all parameters while the LIVE MATRIX plays. There is a flashing blue Led in the
main window of the vocoder if the LIVE MATRIX plays.
Also there are two little LED's over the FILTER SHIFT and the RELEASE knob in the main
Window. This shows that they are in connection with the LIVE MATRIX.

ATTENTION: if FILTER SHIFT and RELEASE in the LIVE MATRIX in use, no adjustment in
the main window is possible. (blue Led's on, no flashing)

It is also possible to automate the LIVE MATRIX in a VST host program.

Default for that is >>> STOP=blue Record=red. <<

red triangle adjust the record/play time from 10s to 1 min

Syntheses Synthesizer

The Syntheses Synthesizer

it has two functions.

First: to play as an oscillator Synth with one to seven waveforms. For example super saw.

Second : to work as a sampler and play samples

Play in Oscillator Mode:

Switch the textpannels, via the little buttons left ,from SAMPLER to SYNTH

Choose your waveform: best for beginning is SAW.

Choose , how many waveforms are play simultaneous. From 1..7.

Choose the VELOCITY off, 1..10. Default is off.

Detune all 7 waveforms. The result is a fat sound

O-TONE gives with distortion, much more overtones to the syntheses Signal. The result is a better
voice understanding.

P-INTENS controls the sensitivity of the Keyboard pitch wheel ( intern and extern )

25
ATTACK and RELEASE control the attack/release time of the volume.

Okt/Semi and Fine tune adjust the main tune of the oscillator and sampler.

Play in SAMPLER mode:

Switch the textpannels with the little buttons left from SYNTH to SAMPLER.

The File Icon opens the File browser. Choose the sample with double click. Adjust tune , ATTACK/
RELEASE. Play on the keyboard.

This buttons/ knobs don't work in SAMPLER mode: WAVEFORM SELECT, DETUNE,
UNI1..7 .

Keyboard / Hold Function /LFO

LFO mod wheel pitch wheel

The keyboard has a special hold function by pressing the first quarter of the key with the mouse.
Press the same key again disables the hold function.

There is also on LFO ( choose waveforms with the little buttons near the text panel )for the
SYNTHESES SYNT pitch modulation.
Adjust the LFO frequency with the FRQ knob. The mod wheel controls how deep is the LFO
modulation.
The pitch wheel works in connection with P-INTENS knob in the Syntheses Synth panel.

26
Effects

Chorus

2-4 2 stage, 4 stage chorus

TRI/SIN waveform
FRQ mod-frequency
FEED feedback
MIX mixed the original signal with the chorus signal
DELAY 0= phasing, max is a short delay
DEEP controls the deep of the modulation from FRQ
PHS Phase = more stereo effect
ON/OFF turns the Chorus On/Off

Reverb

ON/OFF turns the reverb on/off

DMP: decrease the high frequency
WITH: makes a better stereo effect
SIZE: generate a bigger reverb-room
MIX mixed the original signal with the reverb signal

27
Delay

Vox-P has a build-in two delay lines. It can sync to host / or Sequencer tempo

Sync off

By pressing the knobs on the left side of the TEXT PANEL up or down, it displays the following :

1 / 2 note delay
1 / 4 note delay
........
3 / 16 note delay

For example : BPM =120 = 2s

1 / 2 delay = delay 1 s
1 / 4 delay = delay 0,5 s

EXAMPLE: DEL1 =1/2, DEL2=1/4 gives a kind of ping-pong echo

ON/OFF turns the delay on/off

DEL1: delay time of the left channel

FEED1: feedback of the left channel
DMP Damping
DEL2: delay time of the right channel
FEED2: feedback of the right channel
MIX: mix the original signal with the delay signal

The DEL1/DEL2 knob only works, if SYNC is OFF.

FAQ:

If I call two or more Vocoder/Instruments in the same time , the VST-HOST crash.
-open your VST folder, copy the vocoder.dll into a 'test' folder. Rename it for example to
Vocoder1.dll., and copy it back to the VST Folder.
Than you have Vocoder.dll and Vocoder1.dll.
- so you can open two Vocoder in your VST-Host program.( take Vocoder and Voc 1 )
the same with Instruments.

I can't find the Vocoder in my Host Prog

-insert Vox-P as an INSERT EFFEKT not as a VST Instrument.

How can I route an external Signal to the Vocoder?

-open the Input Matrix, switch to EXT-M, STOPP the analyse Sampler.

How can I load my own Samples in the syntheses synth and play it ?
-switch the textbutton from SYNTH to SAMPLER. Open the file browser with a
mouseclick on the FILE ICON,
Select a wave sample.

Filter RELEASE/FILTERSHIFT have no Function !?

- the Knobs are controlled by the LIVE MATRIX !Blue LED'S over the knops are on.
Open the LIVE matrix, Switch FILTER SHIFT and FILTER RELEASE to OFF.
