Materials for Lesson:
American Heroes book for each student
Historical Figure 4 Square organizer printed for each student
Activating Strategy:
Review vocabulary words by playing a classroom version of Hedbandz. Each student will need a
sticky note with a vocabulary word written on it. They are not allowed to look at their word. The
student has to figure out what the word on their forehead is by asking their classmates for clues.
Once they have guessed their word, have them sit down.
Lesson:
Introduce Historical Figure 4 Square organizer. Have students think/pair/share about the
meaning of the headings. (I.e.- What do you think the word occupations means? Students will
silently think, share their definition with a partner, and you will pick a few students to share with
the class.)
Work Session:
Students will read the first of the American Heroes book. Students may complete this task
independently, with a partner, a small group, on the computer, or by listening to the teacher.
Students will summarize by adding 3 new bullets to their Historical Figure 4 Square.
Closing:
Students will share what they added to their Historical Figure 4 Square organizer.
