JAPANESE THEATER

One of the traditions that is very popular until today is the
traditional form of theatre which began at the end of
sixteenth century and soon became the most successful
theatre entertainment.
NOH is a traditional Japanese
theatrical form and one of the
oldest extant theatrical forms
in the world. Nohits name
derived from n, meaning
talent or skill
NOH
-Oldest remaining theatre art in the
world.
-known for its simple and strictly
defined movements, for its use of
beautiful, artistically crafted masks,
and for its unique form of dialogue
reminiscent of a bygone age.
-Noh plays are based on mythology, legend, and the twelfth
century civil war among samurais.
-Noh are divided into five categories: plays about gods, warrior
plays, plays about women (called wig plays), miscellanies
including contemporary issues, and demon plays.
-Costumes in noh drama are very elaborate
silk outfits including kimonos, wigs, and
stylized masks that represent character
types (male and female, old and young,
human and supernatural).

-Physical settings are minimal and


temporary structures are used, as well as
hand-held props that represent emotional
states and other objects.

Japanese metrical form of alternating seven and
five syllables

music) is a type of Japanese classical music that has
been performed at the Imperial court in Kyoto for
reveral centuries.
KAGURA
- ( god-entertainment) is a Japanese word
referring to a specific type of Shinto theatrical
dance- with roots arguably predating those of
NOH.
NAGAUTA
- Is very flexible, can be performed by one shamisen or
by an entire orchestra of twenty musicians, of which ten
are shamisen players, while other play flutes and drums.
