Running head: STUDENT MANUAL 1

Student Manual
The premise of the e-learning module is to teach the students the first ten elements of the

periodic table in order to begin learning chemistry. The students will use visual association to

learn how to memorize the elements. See the appendix for screen images.

The students will access the module through an LMS link. The students will be

introduced to the lesson and the learning objectives.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this lesson, you will

1. Be able to identify the first ten elements of the periodic table in sequence.

2. Be able to match all ten elements to a visual image.

3. Be able to describe what each element is used in or what it is used for.

Navigate to the next page to be introduced to how the brain works: Before beginning

this lesson, let us discuss how the brain works: The brain is a sensory organ that uses the five

senses to remember information. The information that you learn is remembered in your brain as

a mental picture of association. The brain for this process is for your brain to quickly and easily

remember learned information.

Navigate to the next page. The page will begins by explaining visual association. Some

examples of your brains interworking of visual association: When someone says the word

Apple, what do you picture in your mind? Hopefully, you envision the image an actual apple.

If you were asked about your first trip to an amusement park, do you remember the ides, the

games, the sites while you were walking around, or even what you may have been wearing that
day? This is all visual association memory. This is how you will be learning the first ten

elements of the periodic table in this lesson.

After navigating to the next page, you will be instructed to click on each number in the

house layout to see the element description and a visual image to associate it with. Continue this

activity until complete. Once completed, navigate forward to the next page. Your next screen is

a matching activity. You will be given three element names and asked to place them in the table

on the right side of the screen in the proper order. The second activity will consist of all the

elements out of order and you will use the drop-down box to place the elements in sequential

order. At the end of this portion of the module, you have the ability to practice this exercise over

until you feel comfortable with the visual association of the elements and images.

On the next page, you will be presented with an image of the periodic table that shows

where each element is located in the periodic table. Each element is listed by its chemical

symbol and in the order of similar substances that will safely combine with each other. Elements

are divided by, for example, by gaseous substance, metals, etc. This table is for you to

understand how chemicals interact when you begin the chemistry course in the future.

Upon review of the periodic table, you will navigate to the next page which will consist

of a link to a quiz. The quiz instructs you to type all the elements in order and the system will

test your knowledge, but also the speed of how long it takes you to complete the list. At the end

of the quiz, return to the module for completion.

The visual association concept can also be used in future learning of information. This is

not just designed for only learning the elements for a chemistry course.
