EXERCISE 1: MATERIALS AND METHODS

III. MATERIALS AND METHODS

A. APPARATUS AND SET UP
A.1 Experimental Set-up
Figure 1.1 illustrates the set up to be employed in the experiment. A
1/32 in. Teflon plug, which has been drilled with a 1/32 in. hole for gas expansion
and a larger hole, is utilized. A tight fitting stainless steel thermocouple probe is
inserted through the larger hole and connected to a digital thermometer. The
thermocouple facilitates the direct measurement of the temperature of the vapor
exactly after the complete evaporation of the liquid sample inside the flask. The
Teflon plug is inserted firmly to a 100 mL volumetric flask, which is almost entirely
submerged in a water bath. The water bath is maintained to have a temperature of
at least 10C above the boiling point of the sample. The method reflected in the set
up is one of the most common vapor density methods in determining molecular
weight.

B. REAGENTS

The reagents to be used include volatile liquid samples such as the following:
acetone
2 butanone
ethyl acetate
dichloromethane
ethanol
methanol

Two of the samples above, or any other volatile liquids that are provided, are
to be used in conducting the experiment.
