Activity: Bullying Intervention Strategies and Coping Skills
Grade(s): 8th Grade

After this lesson, students will be able to:
1. PS: A1.6 Distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior
2. PS:A2.3 Recognize, accept, respect, and appreciate individual differences
3. PS:B1.4 Develop effective coping skills for dealing with problems
4. PS:B1.6 Know how to apply conflict resolution skills

Materials:
1. Pre- and post- surveys

2. Computer with Internet Access

3. Acting Against Bullying handout

4. Prepared discussion questions


5. Writing utensils

Procedure:

1. At the beginning of the lesson, students will complete a survey through Google
Forms regarding their exposure to bullying in and outside of school, various
intervention strategies that they are familiar with, and resources and systems of
support that they are familiar with.

2. Students will then be directed to the website kidshealth.org, where they will
select one of the articles on bullying to read independently.

3. The counselor will then lead a discussion with students regarding the signs of
bullying and its impact. Questions may include:
1. What kinds of behaviors are considered bullying? Name some different
ways students are bullied.
2. When does teasing cross the line into bullying? Is name-calling
bullying?
3. Have you ever spread a rumor? Why can spreading rumors be
considered bullying?
4. What are some of the effects bullying can have on victims?
5. Why do some students bully other students?

4. Students will then split into small groups of 3-4. The counselor will assign each
group a bullying scenario and intervention strategy. Each group will create and
perform a short skit that includes both the bullying scenario and intervention
strategy.

5. After all groups have performed their skits, the counselor will lead a discussion
with students on various intervention strategies.

6. The counselor will also provide information on resources and support systems
for students who have experienced bullying. Examples include: the counselor,
teachers, parents, or another trusted adult. The websites stopbullying.gov and
cyberbullyhelp.gov also contain good information and resources for students.

7. At the end of the lesson, the counselor will administer a post-survey using
Google Forms, which will assess students knowledge of bullying interventions
and support systems.

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?

Process Data: 100% of 8th grade students will participate in the Bullying
Intervention Strategies and Coping Skills lesson plan.

Perception Data:
Pre- and post- surveys will indicate that:
1. 85% of of 8th grade students will be able to list a minimum of three bullying
intervention strategies.
2. 100% of 8th grade students will be able to name at least one school resource
available for coping with bullying.

Outcome Data: Attendance for 8th grade students will increase 15% after this lesson.

Follow Up: The counselor will revisit 8th grade classes 2-3 weeks after the lesson
to review intervention and coping strategies with students. The counselor will
conduct a follow-up discussion with students regarding bullying and its impact on
students. The counselor will meet individually with students as needed.
