1. A PMMC instrument with a 300 turns coil has a 0.15 T magnetic flux density in its air
gaps. The coil dimensions are D=1.25 cm and l=2 cm. Calculate the torque when the
coil current is 500 A.
2. A PMMC instrument has a 0.12 T magnetic flux density in its air gaps. The coil
dimensions are D=1.5 cm and l=2.25 cm. Determine the number of coil turns required
to give a torque of 4.5 N.m when the coil current is 100 A.
3. A galvanometer has a current sensitivity of 500 nA/mm and a 3 k critical damping
resistance. Calculate its voltage sensitivity and megohm sensitivity.
4. A galvanometer has 300 V/mm voltage sensitivity and a megohm sensitivity of 1.5
M. Determine its critical damping resistance.
5. Determine the current sensitivity and megohm sensitivity for a galvanometer that
deflects by a five centimeters when the coil current is 20 A.
6. A PMMC instrument with a 750 coil resistance gives FSD with a 500 A coil
current. Determine the required shunt resistance to convert the instrument into a dc
ammeter with a FSD of (a) 50 mA, and (b) 30 mA.
7. A dc ammeter is constructed of a 133.3 resistance in parallel with a PMMC

instrument. If the instrument has a 1.2 k coil resistance and 30 A FSD, determine
the measured current at FSD, 0.5 FSD and 0.33 FSD.
8. .A dc ammeter consists of an Ayrton shunt in parallel with a PMMC instrument that
has 1.2 k coil resistance and 100 A FSD. The Ayrton shunt is made up of four 0.1
series connected resistors. Calculate the ammeter range at each setting of the shunt.
9. A 12 V source supplies 25 A to a load. Calculate the load current that would be
measured when using an ammeter with resistance of (a) 0.12, (b) 0.52, and (c)
0.002.
10.An ammeter measures the current in a 10 load supplied from a 10 V source.
Calculate the measured load current when the ammeter resistance is (a) 0.1, and (b)
1.

11.A PMMC instrument with a 900 coil resistance and FSD of 75 A is to be used as a
dc voltmeter. Calculate the individual multiplier resistance to give an FSD of (a) 100
V, (b) 30 V and (c) 5 V, also, determine the voltmeter sensitivity.
12.Calculate the multiplier resistance values required for the voltmeter in problem 11
when the series connected multipliers are used.
13.A PMMC instrument with Rm=1.3 k and FSD of 500 A is used in a multi-range dc
voltmeter. The series connected multiplier resistors are R1=38.7 k R2=40 k and
R3=40 k. Calculate the three voltages ranges and determine the voltmeter sensitivity.
14.Two resistors R1=47 k and R2=82 k are connected in series across a 15 V supply. A
voltmeter on a 10 V range is connected to measure the voltage across R 2. The
voltmeter sensitivity is 10 k/V. Calculate VR2 with and without connecting the
voltmeter.
15.A 100 k potentiometer and a 33 k resistor are connected in series across a 9 V
supply. Calculate the maximum voltage that can be measured across the potentiometer
using a voltmeter with (a) a 20 k/V sensitivity and a 15 V range and (b) a 100 k/V
sensitivity and a 10 V range.
16.Two resistors R1=70 k and R2=50 k are connected in series across a 12 V supply. A
voltmeter on a 5 V range is connected to measure the voltage across R 2. Calculate VR2

(a) with the voltmeter disconnected, (b).with a voltmeter having a sensitivity of 20
k/V, and (c) with a voltmeter having a sensitivity of 200 k/V
17.An ac voltmeter uses a bridge rectifier with a silicon diodes and a PMMC instrument
with FSD of 75 A. If the meter coil resistance is 900 and the multiplier resistor is
708 k, calculate the applied rms voltage when the voltmeter indicates FSD.
18.Determine the new multiplier resistor required for the voltmeter in problem 17 to
change the range to 300 V FSD.
19.Determine the pointer position on the voltmeter in Problem 18 when the applied rms
voltage is (a) 30 V and (b) 10 V.
20.A PPMC instrument with a 900 coil resistance and an FSD of 75 A is to be used
with a half-wave rectifier circuit as an ac voltmeter. Silicon diodes are used, and the
minimum diode forward current is to be 80 A when the instrument indicates
0.25FSD. Calculate the shunt and multiplier resistance values required to give 200 V
full scale deflection.
21.Calculate the sensitivity of the ac voltmeter in Problem 17.
22. Calculate the sensitivity of the ac voltmeter in Problem 20.
23.A rectifier ammeter is to indicate full scale for a 1 A rms current The PMMC
instrument used has a 1200 coil resistance and 500 A FSD, and the current
transformer has Ns= 7000 and Np=10. Silicon diodes are used and the meter series
resistance is Rs =150 k. Determine the required secondary shunt resistance value.
24.A rectifier ammeter has the following components: PMMC instrument with FSD of
200 A and Rm = 900; current transformer with Ns= 600 and Np=5, diodes with VF
of 0.3 V; meter series resistance R s =270 k, transformer shunt secondary resistance
RL = 98.7 k. Calculate the level of transformer primary current for instrument FSD.

25.Calculate the sensitivity of the ac voltmeter when diode D2 is (a) included in the
circuit and (b) omitted from the circuit for a PMMC instrument with FSD 500 A and
Rm = 1700 is used in the half wave rectifier voltmeter circuit. The silicon diode D 1

must have a minimum peak forward current of 100 A when the measured voltage is
20% of FSD. The voltmeter indicates 50 V rms at full scale deflection. Also calculate
the values of Rs and RSH.
26.A PMMC instrument with 250 A FSD has a specified accuracy of 2%. Calculate
the measurement accuracy at currents of 200 A and 100 A.
27.A deflection instrument with 100 A FSD has a 3% specified accuracy. Calculate the
possible error when the meter indication is (a) 50 A and (b) 10 A.
28.A 25 A current is measured on an instrument with 37.5 A FSD. If the measurement
is to be accurate to within 5%, determine the required instrument accuracy.
29.A series ohmmeter is made up of the following components: supply voltage E b = 3V,
series resistor R1 =30 k, meter shunt resistor R2 =50 , meter FSD of 50 A and
meter resistance Rm =50 . Determine the resistance measured at 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75
of full scale deflection.
30.A series ohmmeter that has a standard internal resistance of R 1 =50 k, uses a meter

with FSD of 75 and Rm =100. The meter shunt resistance is R2 =300 , and the
battery voltage Eb is 5 V. Determine the resistance measured at 0, 25%, 50%, 75%,
and 100% of full scale deflection.
31.For the ohmmeter circuit in problem 29, determine the new resistance R 2 must be
adjusted when Eb falls to 2.5 V. Also, determine the new resistance at 0.5 and 0.75 of
full scale deflection.
32.Calculate the accuracy of resistance measurement for the ohmmeter in problem 29 at
0.5 and 0.75 of FSD if the meter used has specified accuracy of 2%.

33.Using a 4.5 V battery together with a meter that has 100 A FSD and coil resistance of
100, design a series ohmmeter to have a range of 1 k to 100 k.
34.Calculate the meter current for the multirange ohmmeter circuit on its Rx10 range
when Rx is 0, 500 and 70.
35. An adjustable resistor R2 =50 is connected parallel to a series ohmmeter to provide
an ohmmeter zero control. The ohmmeter has a standard internal resistance of R 1 =15
k, Rm =50, Eb = 1.5 V and meter FSD of 50 A. Determine the ohmmeter scale
reading at 0.5 FSD and the new resistance value of R 2 must be adjusted when E b falls
to 1.3 V, recalculate the value of R X at this condition. Also, determine the resistance
measured at 0.75 FSD when Eb is 1.3 and 1.5 V.
36.Calculate the meter current for the multirange ohmmeter circuit on the (Rx100) and
(Rx10) ranges when Rx is zero ohm.
37.Determine the accuracy of an ohmmeter at 20% of FSD if the meter used is accurate
to 1%.
38.Calculate the resistance of the Volt Ohm Multimeter (VOM) on its 50 V dc range and
on its 250 V ac range.
