CORIOLIS EFFECT

OUR Earth is a rotating earth. Any object moving on a rotating surface cannot
maintain its straight path. It deflects and follows a curved path. The curving or
deflection of an object is known as the Coriolis Effect.
The deflection in the northern hemisphere is different from the deflection in the
southern hemisphere.
In the northern hemisphere, a moving object always deflects to the right of its
intended straight path.
In the southern hemisphere, a moving object deflects to the left of its intended
straight path.
A seasonal change in the direction of the strongest or dominant winds of a region
is called MONSOON.
Monsoons are masses of air blowing from cold to warm region.
Air masses move from high pressure region to a low pressure region.
The main and the most pronounced monsoons occur in Asia. Monsoons are often
associated with the Indian Ocean. Monsoons determine climate for India,
Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Southeast Asia.
The Northern hemisphere in Asia has more land than the southern hemisphere. In
the Asian side, the southern hemisphere is mostly ocean.

Remember!!!!!

Air flows horizontally due to pressure difference between two places.

ITCZ

The low pressure zone at the equator is called the Intertropical Convergence
Zone (ITCZ).
A low pressure belt at the equator characterized by hot and dry air.
In ITCZ, air rises at the equator and splits to flow north and south at high
elevations.

ECLIPSES

Humans have been used to spend time waiting to watch spectacular phenomena like
solar and lunar eclipses. This is so because phenomena like these seldom occur within a
year.

An eclipse is a phenomenon in which an astronomical body cast a shadow on

another astronomical body.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the Sun and Earth. This
type of eclipse occurs only during new-moon phase.
The shadow of any opaque objects is composed of two parts: umbra, band where
sunlight is totally blocked, and penumbra, the band where sunlight is partially
blocked.
A partial solar eclipse occurs when the moon is at its perigee and the sunlight is
partially blocked.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon is at its perigee (a point in its orbit
closest to Earth), and the moons umbra touches a small region on Earths surface.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth occurs between the Sun and Moon. This
type of eclipse occurs only during full moon phase.
A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the alignment of the sun, Earth, and the
moon is imperfect, causing only part of the moon to be in Earths umbra and the
rest of the moon in the penumbra.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth, and the moon are perfectly
aligned, causing the moon to be in Earths umbra.
