It was a bit of a shock to the system as I remember! One minute I was happily going to a school just
down the end of my road in a class of about twenty and with some cool teachers and close friends
the next I found myself in this enormous school full of strangers and having to travel on a bus for nearly
an hour every morning to get there. My dad had changed jobs and we had to move from a small country
town to a big city, about 300 miles away. My first day was terrifying. It just seemed as if the corridors
were endless and there was someone waiting to bully you round every corner. The teachers could have
helped me more I think. It was pretty obvious that I was having problems, but in a big school like that
you become quite anonymous and just have to get on with it. It took me a long time, but in the end I got
used to it. But not until after my work and grades had suffered quite a bit.
B Greg
In my area you change school when youre eleven. My move involved going from a small school where
you had the same teacher all day long who knew you really well to a big secondary school where no
one knew you at all! However, it wasnt as bad as it could have been. Wed been prepared well and
wed all visited the big school a couple of times before we moved, so we knew roughly what to expect
about the teaching methods and the layout of the school. I had two older sisters there too, so they gave
me a lot of advice. Another good thing was that all my classmates from my previous school went with
me and they kept groups of us together in the different classes. OK, it was a different way of learning
and it took a while to get used to changing classrooms for the different lessons and having to get to
know a range of teachers as well as new classmates, but after a week or two the new school became as
familiar as the old one had been.
C Jeff
I had to leave my old secondary school when I was fourteen because my parents werent happy with the
progress I was making. They were also unhappy with the mates I was going around with. I have to say
that I did have a few discipline issues and I had more detentions than I can count. I guess I simply
didnt enjoy studying and it was more fun to mess around in class. Anyway, I did badly in exams and to
be honest I think the school were about to expel me for getting mixed up in some fighting outside
school, so my parents made the decision to take me out and send me to a different school in another part
of town. At first I was furious. I couldnt see my mates anymore and the teachers were a lot stricter.
They made me work harder than Id ever done before. Looking back it was the best decision my parents
could have taken, but it certainly didnt feel like it at the time!
