THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

El "past continuous" describe acciones o eventos situados en

un tiempo anterior al presente, cuyo comienzo se sita en el
pasado y que todava no ha concluido en el momento de
hablar. Dicho de otro modo, expresa una accin incompleta o
inconclusa del pasado.

Se utiliza:
Con frecuencia, para describir el contexto en una historia escrita en pasado, e.g. "The sun
was shining and the birds were singing as the elephant came out of the jungle. The other
animals were relaxing in the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly. She was
looking for her baby, and she didn't notice the hunter who was watching her through his
binoculars. When the shot rang out, she was running towards the river..."
para describir una accin incompleta que se vio interrumpida por otra accin o evento, e.g. "I
was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang."
para expresar un cambio de opinin: e.g. "I was going to spend the day at the beach but I've
decided to get my homework done instead."
con 'wonder', para formular una peticin muy educada: e.g. "I was wondering if you could
baby-sit for me tonight.".
Examples:
They were waiting for the bus when the accident happened.
Caroline was skiing when she broke her leg.
When we arrived he was having a bath.
When the fire started I was watching television.

 SIMPLE PAST TENSE
Hay muchas maneras de hablar del pasado en ingls, pero el
pasado simple es la forma ms comn. El pasado simple en
ingls es equivalente al pretrito imperfecto y pretrito
indefinido del espaol. Usamos el pasado simple para acciones
completas en el pasado. El perodo de tiempo de estas
acciones no es importante como en el espaol. En el pasado
simple hay verbos regulares y verbos irregulares.

Para formar el pasado simple con verbos
regulares, usamos el infinitivo y aadimos la
terminacin -ed. La forma es la misma para
todas las personas (I, you, he, she, it, we,
they).

Conjugacin del pasado simple

La estructura del "pasado simple" (Past Simple Tense) en ingls es:

 USED TO
El verbo use significa usar o utilizar. Sin
embargo, cuando utilizamos este verbo en el
pasado simple, ms la preposicin to, como
verbo modal, el significado cambia. Adems, se
puede utilizar used to como adjetivo. A
continuacin tienes una explicacin de los
diferentes usos.

To used to (Soler)
El verbo modal used to se emplea para indicar algo que ocurra o sucedera en el pasado de
manera habitual. Tambin, se utiliza para algo que antes era verdad pero ya no lo es. Como con los
otros verbos modales, used to est seguido por la forma base del verbo (el infinitivo sin to).
Para las oraciones afirmativas la construccin es:
SUJETO + used to + VERBO
Si os fijis la oracin la estructura est en past simple y siendo "used" el pasado de "use".
I used to go swimming every morning
Yo sola ir a nadar todas las maanas
RECORDAD: esta estructura solo puede ser usada en "past simple". No se puede decir:
I use to go swimming (INCORRECTO)
Yo suelo ir a nadar
Negacin con "I used to"
La negacin se forma como cualquier oracin en "past simple" con el auxiliar "did" y el adverbio
"not":
SUJETO + did not use to + VERBO
my mother did not use to read books when I was a child
mi madre no sola leer libros cuando yo era joven
Alternativamente se puede construir la negacin con otras partculas como "never":
SUJETO + never used to + VERBO
I never used to spend money
Yo no sola gastar dinero
La interrogacin con "I used to"
La interrogacin se construye tambin con el auxiliar "did" siguiendo las reglas del " past simple":
did SUJETO + use to + VERBO?
Did you use to play chess at school?
Solas jugar al ajedrez en la escuela?
