Cabinet
The cabinet, the second distinctive icon of
the Studio, gained cardinal importance in
the project, not only for its functionality, but
for its position in the centre of the space as
well. In spite of the fact that no documents
are kept on Labayens archive, many of the
drawings in Aizpuruas notebook seem to reflect
sketches previous to the definitive project of
the neoplasticist cabinet. In those drawings
is visible the desire to integrate drawers
of different sizes, for the orderly storage of
drawings, books and models, while forming a
colourful plastic composition. (Fig. 5).
This piece of furniture was displayed as a large
square canvas that presided over the workroom.
Its formal structure, based on planes of pure
geometries and lines of different dimensions,
revealed, as well as the faade, the obvious
attachment to the Neoplasticist aesthetic of
the authors. The elevation of the cabinet was
conceived as a two-dimensional element,
composed of squares and rectangles of the
three primary colours. The handles, designed
as vertical and horizontal black lines, made the
artwork complete (Fig. 6). Both aspects the
orthogonal pre-eminence and the preference
for the primary colours formed the basis of the
Neoplasticist syntax.
In fact, the resemblance of the piece of
furniture to the paintings by Piet Mondrian
is particularly revealing. Several examples
may have been the inspiration for the work of

A (1917), which seems to be a puzzle in
movement that the Basque architects could
order and build the cabinet with, to Composition
B (1920), whose proportions come close to
those in the cabinet for 32 Prim Street. Other
previous works by Mondrian such as The Sea
(1914) and Pier and the Ocean (1915) present
compositions based on orthogonal lines, with
the absence of planes which could have been

handles (Fig. 7).
Artefact
However, faade and cabinet, poster and
canvas, beyond being two pictorial neoplastic
works of art, and therefore, presumably two-
dimensional, fulfilled a practical function as
well, not only as closing and storage elements,
but also when in contact with the space. The
cabinet adhered to the faade by its only 4
blind point, located between the window
and the gateway. Its height adjusted to the
vertical dimension the window presented, to
the point that it seemed to be an extension
of the faade penetrating the inside. The
