Craig Ellwood's third and final case study housethe Fields House, designed and built from 1956 to 1958represents his most successful
integration of industrial prefabrication with architectural design. The house's structure comprises 2"x2" hollow steel section columns on an 8'
square grid, joined by 2"x5" tube steel beams supporting the roof deck. This frame was prefabricated in 16' sections and shipped to the site; it
was erected by four men in eight hours. The columns were designed with a universal jointing system which could accept all the house's
different wall types (solid panels, fixed glass, windows, hinged and sliding doors) with no modifications. Ellwood's design doesn't attempt to
hide the nature of its construction, and as a result, he is able to put the "fab" in "prefab."
