directly or through intermediaries, and/or committed acts of infringement in this judicial district.

Hoeptner has also placed infringing products into the stream of commerce by shipping those

products into this district or knowing that such products would be shipped into this district.

5. Hoeptner operates an interactive website at http://www.freezeflow.com/. (Exhibit

A.) Hoeptner advertises infringing products on this website, the home page of which includes a

hyperlink labelled Contact us. (Id.)

6. When a person (e.g., a customer) clicks that hyperlink, the persons email

Case 2:17-cv-00170 Document 1 Filed 03/03/17 Page 3 of 21 PageID #: 3

7. The above referenced website also includes hyperlinks to various products,

including an infringing product called Executive Roof Hydrant. (Exhibit A.) Hoeptner touts

that this product is a No Drainer! (Id.)

8. When a person (e.g., a customer) clicks that hyperlink, another webpage opens,

http://www.freezeflow.com/pages/executiveRoof.htm, which provides the person with further

information about the infringing product. (Exhibit B). This webpage includes tabs labeled

Features, How it Works, Parts, Documents, Installation, Spec, and Orders. (Id.)

9. When a person (e.g., a customer) clicks on Orders, another webpage opens,

10. Hoeptner takes orders via phone, email, fax and mail, and will provide pricing

assistance and additional information upon request. (Exhibit C.)

11. Hoeptner placed a hyperlink labelled Warranty near the bottom of this

webpage. When a person (e.g., a customer) clicks that hyperlink, another webpage opens,

http://www.freezeflow.com/assets/PDF%20Docs/Warranty.pdf, containing a document entitled

MANUFACTURERS LIMITED ONE YEAR WARRANTY. (Exhibit D.)

12. On information and belief, Hoeptner conducts business in this district using,

among other things, the above mentioned webpages, mailing address, email address, phone

number, and fax number. This business comprises offering to sell and selling infringing products

in this district. Upon information and belief, a substantial portion of Hoeptners customer base is

in Texas.

13. Hoeptner conducts business on a national scale, which includes advertising,

offering to sell, and selling infringing products nationally, including in Texas and in this district.

14. As a part of Hoeptners national sales campaign, Hoeptner participates in

industry sales shows and exhibitions.

4
Case 2:17-cv-00170 Document 1 Filed 03/03/17 Page 5 of 21 PageID #: 5

15. As a recent example of Hoeptners national sales campaign, Hoeptner had an

Exhibitor booth at the 2016 ASPE (American Society of Plumbing Engineers) Convention &

Expo in Phoenix. See

https://aspe.org/sites/default/files/webfm/2016Conv/2016ASPE_ShowGuide_online.pdf.

(excerpt attached as Exhibit E.) The Exposition provided an opportunity to spend quality time

to meet and talk with the Exhibiting manufacturers which are anxious to show their

latest innovations. Id., at p. 2.

16. As another recent example of Hoeptners national sales campaign, Hoeptner had

an Exhibitor booth at 2016 Groundwater Week in Las Vegas in December of 2016. See

https://ngwa.confex.com/ngwa/gw16/webprogram/Session10263.html. (Exhibit F.)

17. Hoeptner purports to have created a plumbing standard that is applicable to the

infringing products. Hoeptner has worked for years to have the states adopt this standard.

Hoeptner wrote an email to the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), wherein

he claims that it took 6 years just to get a plumbing standard developed, and that it took

another 10 years to get the states to adopt the standard. See

https://www.uspto.gov/sites/default/files/patents/law/comments/me_hoeptner_31may2012.pdf.

(Exhibit G.)

18. According to Hoeptner, the above referenced plumbing standard is a national

standard designed to help states avoid liability and give manufacturers the ability to meet one

set of requirements. See http://www.asse-

plumbing.org/Articles/Backflow/Serious%20Cross%20Contamination%20in%20Yard%20Hydra

nts.pdf. (Exhibit H.)

Case 2:17-cv-00170 Document 1 Filed 03/03/17 Page 6 of 21 PageID #: 6

19. Prior to the filing of this Complaint, WCM purchased in this judicial district from

Hoeptner an infringing Executive Roof Hydrant, part number 213RE. In particular, an employee

of WCMs subsidiary, ISIMET/MAPA, LLC, located in Naples, Texas, purchased the infringing

product for shipment to Mount Pleasant, Texas. (Exhibit I.)

20. Venue is proper in this judicial district under 28 U.S.C. 1400(b) and 1391(b)

and (c) because, among other reasons, Hoeptner is subject to personal jurisdiction in this district

with respect to this civil action and has committed acts of infringement in this district, including

offering to sell and distributing and selling infringing products in this district.

12
Case 2:17-cv-00170 Document 1 Filed 03/03/17 Page 13 of 21 PageID #: 13

37. On information and belief, Hoeptner had actual knowledge of the above URL, and

Hoeptner has actually viewed the above URL, before this Complaint was filed.

38. Upon information and belief, Hoeptner is familiar with the concept of patent

marking. According to Hoeptner, Executive Roof Hydrant, part no. 2131RE is [c]overed by

one or more of several patents identified by Hoeptner. (Exhibit L.)

39. Upon information and belief, Hoeptner is knowledgeable with respect to the

process for applying for and obtaining patents in the United States. (See Exhibit G.) Hoeptner

claims to have roughly 40 patents. (Id.)

40. Hoeptner has been involved in patent litigation actions, for example: Herbert

Hoeptner, III et al. vs. Matco-Norca, Inc., Case # 2:10-cv-06002-GW-CW (C.D. Cal.); Herbert

41. Prior to filing this Complaint, WCM sent a letter to Hoeptner notifying Hoeptner

that Hoeptner was infringing at least Claim 14 the 718 Patent and U.S. Patent No. D574,065.

42. At minimum, Hoeptner had actual knowledge of the 718 Patent, and actual

knowledge of allegations of infringement thereof, prior to being served with this Complaint.

43. On information and belief, Hoeptner had actual knowledge that its customers

directly infringe the 718 Patent, for example when they use an Infringing Product, such as

Executive Roof Hydrant, part no. 2131RE, in the United States without authority from WCM.

44. On information and belief, Hoeptner actively induces infringement of the 718

Patent under 35 U.S.C. 271(b). As discussed above, Hoeptner was actually aware that the act

of using the 718 Patent in the United States without authority from WCM constitutes direct

infringement of at least Claim 14 of the 718 Patent.

13
Case 2:17-cv-00170 Document 1 Filed 03/03/17 Page 14 of 21 PageID #: 14

45. Hoeptner specifically intends and encourages infringing acts through its

advertisements, websites, and installation instructions given to its customers. (See Exhibits A-D,

L, M.) Hoeptner also touts the Infringing Products at conventions and Exhibitions, for the

purpose of selling them and instructing customers how to use and install them in the United

States. (See Exhibits E, F.) Hoeptner also purports to have developed a plumbing standard

that is applicable to the Infringing Products. (See Exhibits B, G, H.)

46. On information and belief, Hoeptner contributes to infringement of the 718

Patent under 35 U.S.C. 271(c). Hoeptner offers to sell or sells within the United States, or

imports into the United States components of a patented machine, manufacture, or combination

that constitute a material part of the invention, knowing the same to be especially made or

adapted for use in an infringement of the 718 Patent, which components are not a staple article

or commodity of commerce suitable for substantial non-infringing use.

47. As discussed above, Hoeptner was actually aware that the act of using the

invention claimed in at least Claim 14 of the 718 Patent in the United States without authority

from WCM constitutes direct infringement of at least Claim 14 of the 718 Patent.

48. As discussed above, Hoeptner offers to sell and sells in the United States

Executive Roof Hydrant, part no. 2131RE, which comprises a hydrant, means to support the

hydrant, and upper and lower flanges with associated mounting hardware to secure the hydrant to

the roof of a building. (See, e.g., Exhibits L, M.) These components constitute a material part of

the invention and are not staple articles of commerce suitable for substantial non-infringing use.

49. On information and belief, Hoeptner has and continues to willfully infringe at

least Claim 14 of the 718 Patent. On information and belief, as discussed above, Hoeptner had

actual knowledge of the 718 Patent and its infringement thereof, before this Complaint was

filed.

50. The 718 Patent is presumed valid under 35 U.S.C. 282(a).

51. On information and belief, Hoeptner copied roof-mounted hydrants sold by WCM

or its affiliates, knowing that the same are covered by the 718 Patent.

52. On information and belief, Hoeptner does not inform its customers that the

Infringing Products are covered by the 718 Patent.

53. Hoeptners ongoing infringement of the 718 Patent irreparably harms WCM.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ATTORNEYS COMPLETING CIVIL COVER SHEET FORM JS 44

Authority For Civil Cover Sheet

The JS 44 civil cover sheet and the information contained herein neither replaces nor supplements the filings and service of pleading or other papers as
required by law, except as provided by local rules of court. This form, approved by the Judicial Conference of the United States in September 1974, is
required for the use of the Clerk of Court for the purpose of initiating the civil docket sheet. Consequently, a civil cover sheet is submitted to the Clerk of
Court for each civil complaint filed. The attorney filing a case should complete the form as follows:

I.(a) Plaintiffs-Defendants. Enter names (last, first, middle initial) of plaintiff and defendant. If the plaintiff or defendant is a government agency, use
only the full name or standard abbreviations. If the plaintiff or defendant is an official within a government agency, identify first the agency and
then the official, giving both name and title.
(b) County of Residence. For each civil case filed, except U.S. plaintiff cases, enter the name of the county where the first listed plaintiff resides at the
time of filing. In U.S. plaintiff cases, enter the name of the county in which the first listed defendant resides at the time of filing. (NOTE: In land
condemnation cases, the county of residence of the "defendant" is the location of the tract of land involved.)
(c) Attorneys. Enter the firm name, address, telephone number, and attorney of record. If there are several attorneys, list them on an attachment, noting
in this section "(see attachment)".

II. Jurisdiction. The basis of jurisdiction is set forth under Rule 8(a), F.R.Cv.P., which requires that jurisdictions be shown in pleadings. Place an "X"
in one of the boxes. If there is more than one basis of jurisdiction, precedence is given in the order shown below.
United States plaintiff. (1) Jurisdiction based on 28 U.S.C. 1345 and 1348. Suits by agencies and officers of the United States are included here.
United States defendant. (2) When the plaintiff is suing the United States, its officers or agencies, place an "X" in this box.
Federal question. (3) This refers to suits under 28 U.S.C. 1331, where jurisdiction arises under the Constitution of the United States, an amendment
to the Constitution, an act of Congress or a treaty of the United States. In cases where the U.S. is a party, the U.S. plaintiff or defendant code takes
precedence, and box 1 or 2 should be marked.
Diversity of citizenship. (4) This refers to suits under 28 U.S.C. 1332, where parties are citizens of different states. When Box 4 is checked, the
citizenship of the different parties must be checked. (See Section III below; NOTE: federal question actions take precedence over diversity
cases.)

III. Residence (citizenship) of Principal Parties. This section of the JS 44 is to be completed if diversity of citizenship was indicated above. Mark this
section for each principal party.

IV. Nature of Suit. Place an "X" in the appropriate box. If there are multiple nature of suit codes associated with the case, pick the nature of suit code
that is most applicable. Click here for: Nature of Suit Code Descriptions.

V. Origin. Place an "X" in one of the seven boxes.

Original Proceedings. (1) Cases which originate in the United States district courts.
Removed from State Court. (2) Proceedings initiated in state courts may be removed to the district courts under Title 28 U.S.C., Section 1441.
When the petition for removal is granted, check this box.
Remanded from Appellate Court. (3) Check this box for cases remanded to the district court for further action. Use the date of remand as the filing
date.
Reinstated or Reopened. (4) Check this box for cases reinstated or reopened in the district court. Use the reopening date as the filing date.
Transferred from Another District. (5) For cases transferred under Title 28 U.S.C. Section 1404(a). Do not use this for within district transfers or
multidistrict litigation transfers.
Multidistrict Litigation Transfer. (6) Check this box when a multidistrict case is transferred into the district under authority of Title 28 U.S.C.
Section 1407.
Multidistrict Litigation Direct File. (8) Check this box when a multidistrict case is filed in the same district as the Master MDL docket.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NOT AN ORIGIN CODE 7. Origin Code 7 was used for historical records and is no longer relevant due to
changes in statue.

VI. Cause of Action. Report the civil statute directly related to the cause of action and give a brief description of the cause. Do not cite jurisdictional
statutes unless diversity. Example: U.S. Civil Statute: 47 USC 553 Brief Description: Unauthorized reception of cable service

VII. Requested in Complaint. Class Action. Place an "X" in this box if you are filing a class action under Rule 23, F.R.Cv.P.
Demand. In this space enter the actual dollar amount being demanded or indicate other demand, such as a preliminary injunction.
Jury Demand. Check the appropriate box to indicate whether or not a jury is being demanded.

VIII. Related Cases. This section of the JS 44 is used to reference related pending cases, if any. If there are related pending cases, insert the docket
numbers and the corresponding judge names for such cases.

Date and Attorney Signature. Date and sign the civil cover sheet.

Dear Convention & Exposition Attendees,

Thank you very much for taking time out of your personal and professional schedules
to join us in Phoenix for the 2016 ASPE Convention & Exposition. This years event has some
fresh new ideas that our more seasoned attendees will notice and appreciate, and our first-
time attendees will be equally impressed with the educational and networking opportunities
that are available. Our goal is to make sure the experience is both rewarding and beneficial in
advancing your career in this industry.
The event kicks off with a pre-conference, two-day Green Plumbing Design (GPD)
Workshop. In addition to the GPD Workshop, we are excited to announce the first-ever
Women of ASPE (WOA) Leadership Forum. This Forum will give the Women of ASPE the
opportunity to network with their peers while they learn about personal branding and how
to apply it toward their professional growth and development. ASPEs Standing Committees
will also be getting together during this time, and their meetings are open to anyone who has
an interest in hearing about the projects on which they are working. We also will be hosting
Welcome the Council Meetings this year, and they are geared toward educating our Chapter Officers.

to Phoenix
The Business Meeting will include an update on Society business and of course the election
of the 20162018 Society Board of Directors.

and the The Sunday night party will be held at the Corona Ranch & Rodeo Grounds, so bring
your cowboy hat and join us for some fun and excitement. During the Banquet near the
2016 ASPE conclusion of the Convention, we will be honoring those special individuals who have made
substantial contributions to our profession and this Society.
Convention & Dont forget to make time for our keynote speaker who is future baseball Hall of Famer
and World Series Champion Steve Garvey. I am sure he will be sharing some very inspiring
Exposition! stories that will invigorate and motivate you.
The Convention would not be complete without the Exposition. This is your opportunity
to spend quality time on the show floor to meet and talk with the hundreds of exhibiting
manufacturers. The exhibitors are anxious to show you their latest innovations, and you
will earn CEUs while reviewing and discussing their products with them. You can also earn
CEUs by attending any of the 25 first-class educational sessions that will be taught by experts
currently working in the field.
I would like to thank our Education Committee, which is led by ASPE Vice President
of Education, David DeBord, CPD, GPD, LEED AP BD+C, ARCSA AP, CFPS, FASPE, and Chair
Francisco DeHoyos for developing our educational programs. Thanks also go to our 2016
Convention Co-Chairs, Greg Farmer, PE, LEED AP, Rob Shorey, CPD, GPD, FASPE, and Chris
Scott, CPD, for all of their hard work. We could not have done any of this without the help of
the Phoenix Chapter, so thank you for your assistance and for welcoming us to to your great
city. Finally, the ASPE staff has worked very hard to make the 2016 Convention and Exposition
a success, so I would like to thank them too for all of their efforts. We could not host such a
great event without all of their great ideas and dedication.
Enjoy the show!

Subject: Patent Examiners abusive use of "Obvious to anyone skilled in the art" to deny a patent

Dear USPTO

Anything you can do to help the small inventor is a big help to the country
as a whole. Therefore your micro entity concept is a good start however
taxing the small inventor with any
"Maintenance fees" is brutal to all small inventors when many inventions
take ten to fifteen years to develop fully and become profitable. It took me
6 years just to get a plumbing standard developed,
It took another 10 years to get the states to adopt the standard, all so I
could START selling my invented product.

I am deeply concerned with the Patent Examiner's abusive use of the term
"Obvious to anyone skilled in the art" as a tool to disallow a patent claim. I
have roughly 40 patents, and the need to prevent obviousness is readily
apparent to all, however, recently "Obvious" can be referenced by combining
multiple patent concepts. For the Patent office to assume that combining
multiple concepts in multiple patents is somehow obvious makes me realize
that the people making the rules for the patent office have never invented a
thing in their life. You would be surprised just how non obvious most things
are. It was not obvious that telephones had any value. It was not obvious
that airplanes had any value. It was not obvious that Xerox had any value. It
was not obvious that Typewriter correcting fluid, White Out, had any
value. The list goes on and on. Obvious is a term used after the fact.

I had a patent application rejected for "Obvious to anyone skilled in the art"
based upon six different cited patents, two of which were my own
patents. How on earth can it be obvious to anyone skilled in the art if I am
the expert in the art with two patents and did not see this new patent
concept at the time I invented the other two patents. All patents become
"Obvious" after they are explained.

The current use of the term "Obvious" is not only destroying the small and
large inventor, but it is allowing overseas companies to manufacture
products that were invented here but not protected.
This is a great drain on our ingenuity, profitability and our economy. Stop
giving good ideas to other countries.

Regards,

HerbHoeptner

Roof Top Support Solutions

In 1998, MAPA Products introduced the first plastic based adjustable roller sup-
port system to the market; thus meeting the need for a cost effective engineered prod-
uct which provides protection to the roof membrane from the effects of thermal expan-
sion.

Since then MAPA Products has become the leader in roof top support solutions with
the most complete support product line in the industry.
MAPA Products Supports are designed to protect the roof and piping system
from the effects of thermal expansion; while providing the customer with a cost
effective alternative for installing piping across a flat roof.

Historically wood blocking has been used to support rooftop piping.

Block supports can

cause extensive dam-
age to the roof through
rapid deterioration and
rigid strapping of the
pipe to the block.

Specification Result

When alternatives for rooftop supports were wood blocks or expensive stain-
less steel, MAPA introduced the first plastic based adjustable support for light to
medium duty gas piping. This cost effective support started a design trend that
revolutionized the industry.

MS-1 Series-Patent # 6,536,717

Single Post Supports:

Typically Used for Condensate Drain Piping:
MAPA Products supports are designed and manufactured in compliance with the International
Fuel Gas Code, MSS SP-58-2002, MSS SP-69-2002 and MSS SP-127-2001where applicable for
structural support systems.

Recommended Usage:
Use as a pipe support stand for single piping runs installed on single ply and built-up roofs. The thread-
ed rod assembly can be adjusted to allow piping to be installed level or when used with condensate pip-
ing, rods can be adjusted to ensure proper flow. Only the Standard Duty MS-1-(X)-A10 may be used for
natural gas piping and only when thermal expansion is not a concern.

This product is designed to be used as a pipe support stand for all applications installed on single ply or
built-up roofs

The adjustable support models allow piping to be installed level or tapered for gravity flow. The addition
of the optional neoprene pad adhered to the base provides additional protection by separating the sup-
port from the roof membrane. All supports are available with optional MWP Series Walk Pad, a thick
rubber pad and adhesive for in the field application.
Technical Information:
MT and MS series support bases combine the durability of a 33% reinforced fiberglass 6/6 nylon support
base with an adjustable threaded rod assembly to provide an economical method of supporting a single
pipe. The standard threaded rod assembly is attached to a stainless steel cushioned pipe clamp which
is red tipped to indicate maximum extension. MX Series (Heavy-Duty) supports are manufactured from
stainless steel.
Note:
Maximum support spacing should not exceed 10 O.C.
Additional supports are recommended at each change of direction, branch and at each initiation and
termination of the piping run.
Supports should be cross-braced at intervals as stated by design engineer in project specifications.
Where not specified by design engineer, MAPA Products recommends that supports should be
cross-braced at each end of run where the distance from roof surface to bottom of pipe exceeds 12,

Strut Supports
Typically Used for Electrical Conduit and Refrigeration Line Sets:
MAPA Products supports are designed and manufactured in compliance with the International
Fuel Gas Code, MSS SP-58-2002, MSS SP-69-2002 and MSS SP-127-2001where applicable for
structural support systems.

Recommended Usage:
This product is designed to be used as a pipe support stand for all conduit, refrigeration and natural gas
piping applications installed on single ply or built-up roofs. When utilized within the recommended load-
ing limits the strut supports are recommended for securing single or multiple line sets when thermal ex-
pansion is not a concern.

The adjustable support models allow piping to be installed level across tapered roofs. The addition of the
optional neoprene pad adhered to the base provides additional protection by separating the support
from the roof membrane. All supports are available with optional MWP Series Walk Pad, a thick rub-
ber pad and adhesive for in the field application.

The HA version of this strut support provides an adjustable rod, strut assembly and band hanger to cra-
dle the piping while allowing for greater vertical adjustability.

Strut Supports are available as a structurally attached model. The supports may be utilized in areas
where seismic or high wind zones are of concern and where structural design allows for system loads at
attachment points. MAPA Products Structurally Attached Supports provide a secure weatherproof pene-
tration of the roof deck. Refer to additional information in the Structurally Attached section of the prod-
uct catalog.
Note:
Maximum support spacing should not exceed 10 O.C.
Additional supports are recommended at each change of direction, branch and at each initiation and
termination of the piping run.
Supports should be cross-braced at intervals as stated by design engineer in project specifications.
Where not specified by design engineer, MAPA Products recommends that supports should be
cross-braced at each end of run where the distance from roof surface to bottom of pipe exceeds 12,
then at 80 intervals or where sway is detected after installation is complete
It is the responsibility of the installer to coordinate with the specifying engineer the necessity and/or
method in which the support system should be structurally secured.
Technical Information:
MT and MS Series supports are manufactured from a nylon base with aluminum 1 5/8 shallow strut,
while the MX Series supports use grade 304 stainless steel for the base material along with a heavier 1

Pedestal Support Systems

MPS-(x) / Structural Stainless Steel Pedestals
Pedestal for Roof Mounted Load Centers and Trapeze Supports

Where rooftop services require structural support; the Utility Pedestal

may also be utilized. These MPS-(X):36/12 Series Pedestals utilize a
heavier and as necessary extended stainless steel tubing (11 gauge and
up to seven feet in overall length), and are typically used to construct
trapeze supports systems, curbs and equipment supports systems.

HD Structural Trapeze

Additionally, devising a structural platform between the two Pedestals will permit roof mounted electrical
equipment such as a transformer to be mounted securely above the roof surface. Contact MAPA for
assistance in devising alternative applications or uses of this Pedestal.

Pedestals, when installed in parallel, will provide a

suitable support structure for mounting of an elec-
trical load center or other electrical devices or junc-
tion boxes. Structural support members such as
strut or angle iron can be field affixed to the exterior
of the Pedestal by using common fastening hard-
ware and a weatherproof adhesive/sealant.

Upon these structural members, weather-tight load

centers can be installed, with service conduit then
extending outward to the various roof mounted
equipment. MAPA recommends using a Strut Sup-
port or the MAPA Bridge Assemblies to support
these conduits.

Note: Pedestals are custom fabricated for specific project requirements and typically require a
four (4) week lead-time after product submittal approval.

Structural Restraint System Patent No. 7475513

Structurally Attached Support Systems

MAPA Products supports are designed and manufactured in compliance with the International
Fuel Gas Code, MSS SP-58-2002, MSS SP-69-2002 and MSS SP-127-2001where applicable for
structural support systems.

The structural support series is designed as a

platform from which various support configura-
tions may be manufactured for an effective
means to positively secured service and supports
directly to the roof deck. Typical uses would in-
clude rooftop piping and conduit, chilled water
and return drain piping, ducting systems, roof
mounted equipment platforms and crossover sys-
tems.

Supports may be utilized in areas where seismic

or high wind zones are of concern and where
structural design allows for system loads at attachment points.

Where design does not stipulate the support structure to be secured to the roof deck, MAPA Products
recommends the use of our standard non-penetrating Master Base Platform with the MX-1.xxx-SA sin-
gle post base and bracing assemblies.

Structural support trapeze assemblies used in conjunction with

free standing roller supports to secure piping system to roof.

Technical Data
MAPA Products structural support bases are 18 gauge, 304 stainless steel with all stainless steel hard-
ware; typical base features are a raised deck with rolled edges and continuously welded seams to pro-
vide no surface penetrations to the unit. Attachment of the base is accomplished with ATR shaft(s)
which penetrate the roof deck and are attached to either a structural member or the provided steel under
deck plate with appropriate fasteners.

Single post designs feature a standard 4 diameter by 6 high shroud which is available with 3/8, 1/2 or
3/4 ATR mounting rods providing a 4 attachment stud above the shroud or as a single post pipe sup-
port assembly with rubber grommet / stainless steel clamp assembly sized as specified for the applica-

securely mounted to the roof deck using MAPA
Products structural support bases. Hardware, strut
and hangers are available as indicated by specifi-
cation.

Additional sway and seismic cable bracing assem-

blies are attached to the strut verticals and an-
chored to the roof deck by means of an MX-1.xxx-
SA Series single post base.

It is recommended that these enhancements be considered where the specifying engineer determines
that the specific zone, code and/or standard pertaining to the project would require the additional brac-
ing.

MAPA Products does not perform engineering design; the structural engineer is responsible for confirm-
ing that the structure upon which supports are installed is designed in accordance with accepted design
codes and standards which allow for the installation of rooftop equipment and piping. Further MAPA
Products shall not be liable for damage or injury caused by the improper use or installation of the prod-
uct.

Design Criteria:
Information is provided as reference for the design engineer. Maximum weight limits provided for indi-
vidual models is based upon the generally associated typical usage of the support. Every project pro-
vides it own unique challenges when designing for seismic and high wind forces. Design should meet

Plumbing Pedestals Overview

MAPA Products primary focus is on solutions to Common Problems within the
construction industry.
Our Roof Top Pedestals are an excellent example of one of these Solutions. Prior to the MAPA roof-
top Pedestal Hydrant; design options for hydrant installations on the roof relied upon field constructed
insulated, sheet metal enclosures covering a roof penetration for a standard hose bib or installation of a
Yard Hydrant through a pitch pan.

MAPA Products Design:

Utilizes a sturdy stainless steel shroud with an 16x16 stainless

steel upper deck flashing or an optional Deck Cap.

Plumbing Pedestals: Patent No. 7,314,057

Plumbing Pedestals
MPH-24FP:24/9

The MPH-24FP:24/9 meets ASSE 1057 Sanitary Yard Hydrant Stand-

ard. The hydrant utilizes a 1 bronze valve within a fully insulated stain-
less steel shroud. This drain down design allows water within the
stand pipe to drain down to the conditioned space within the building.

How the Hydrant Works:

The design of the hydrant assembly is based on a venturi principle.
When the hydrant is OFF, the stopper seals against the nozzle and
stops flow. The water remaining in the riser drains back into the reser-
voir tank below the roofline. When the hydrant is ON, the flow through
the nozzle creates a vacuum in the reservoir evacuating the water out
through the hydrant. A brass valve float assembly located on the stain-
less shroud allows air to escape from the reservoir as the tank fills and
allows air to enter the tank as the vacuum force evacuates the water
from the tank.

Hose connections to the Hydrant should only be made using the quick
disconnect fitting provided with the unit. This fitting incorporates a snap
-on disconnect with a vacuum breaker. To prevent potential cross-
contamination of the water supply system, it is not recommended that
any other type of hose connection be made to the hydrant than as stat-
ed here.

MPH-24D:24/9

The MPH-24D:24/9 utilizes a 1 bronze valve within a fully insulated

stainless steel shroud. This Auto-Drain assembly has a full port ball
valve with an auto-drain port that is located below freeze line at the
base of the Hydrant.

The drain down design of the MPH-24D:24/9 hydrant allows the water
remaining in the stand pipe to discharge through the field provided drain
down piping to an open site drain located below the roofline.

An auto-drain type hose vacuum breaker is permanently attached to the

discharge outlet located near the top of the pedestal. Supply connec-
tion is made at the fitting located at the base of the Hydrant.

Expansion Cage: Patent No. 6,520,123

Expansion Tank Cages

MXC- (8,11)
Practical Application:
Because standard hot water expansion tanks are factory fitted without support flanges, it becomes
necessary to field devise a means to support these tanks. Though often installed merely suspended
from the piping system, it is often preferred that these tanks be firmly secured in place upon final in-
stallation. Our Expansion-Cages are ideally suited for this purpose. The light duty wire construction
provides a cost efficient means of providing this support. The Expansion-Cage is available for all com-
mon sized in-line expansion tanks.
Recommended Usage:
Use the Expansion-Cage to support standard Diaphragm type In-Line Hot Water Expansion Tanks.
These cages will support tanks in vertical position with NPT connection resting inside the bottom ring
of the cage. The Expansion-Cage is ideally suited for residential usage as well as commercial installa-
tions where water heater sizes permit the use of a diaphragm type in-line expansion tank.

ate electrical conduit for all 120-VAC coils; and Series 300 - Fuel gas (5 oz. max.) Aluminum
where mandated by local governing codes, all 24- construction
VAC coils.

Notice:
Piping system should be thoroughly flushed prior to operation. If systems are operated without proper
flushing, the solenoid diaphragm may become fouled and may not close properly when solenoid is
disengaged. The use of in-line filters will greatly reduce the risk of damage to the solenoid diaphragm
and/or orifice commonly caused by foreign materials in a fluid system.

MAPA Products cannot warrant solenoids and valve assemblies against the effects of hard water, cor-
rosive agents, contaminants, or debris present in the piping system or against effects of exotic or
harsh substances.

Maintenance:
MAPA Products recommends that the piping system be periodically checked to assure that debris is
not present in the system. Debris that lodges in the solenoid diaphragm will cause the solenoid not to
function properly. Periodically test solenoid operation to assure that the valve closes completely when
solenoid is disengaged.

Solenoid Valve Enclosures

Pre-Assembled Solenoid Enclosures
MAPA Products pre-assembled Solenoid Enclosures are intended for
use with the MAPA Control Station or other control devices where pro-
ject designs specify solenoids to be housed within an enclosure.

Each solenoid station is assembled with a threaded main ball valve

cut-off and union fittings. All piping joints are tested for tightness. How-
ever, the union at each station is loose fit for ease in field installation. The stations are secured to alu-
minum strut supports by means of pipe clamps. Both the inlet and outlet of the stations are plugged to
prevent foreign matter from entering the system prior to installation. Refer to Installation and Wiring
Instructions for details regarding field connections of the assembly components.

Enclosure Specifications and Dimensions:

The NEMA 1 enclosure may be either surface or flush mounted.

Door latch may be specified as Slotted Latch, Hand-Knob or Keyed Lock.

Standard Assembly Enclosure is provided with rubber grommets for piping inlet and outlet holes.

Valve assemblies, Stations are arranged within the enclosure to insure ease in making field-piping
connections. Wiring leads for solenoids are terminated at contact points where interface relays are
included. Each station is labeled for its intended use. i.e.. NAT. GAS; Cold Water.

Solenoid Valve Enclosures

Enclosure Specifications:
Provide and locate MAPA Solenoid Enclosures (MSE-XX) as shown on plans. The enclosure shall be
controlled by an Industrial Control Station, which controls all utilities as shown on plans. Number of so-
lenoid assemblies intended for use and pipe sizes are noted on Plumbing Schedule.

Note: MSE series pre-assembled standard enclosures utilize the MS-200 series solenoids for all fluid
and compressed air systems and 300 series for all fuel gas piping unless expressly specified otherwise.

Maintenance:
We recommend that the piping system be periodically checked to assure that debris is not present in the
system. Debris that lodges in the solenoid diaphragm will cause the solenoid to function improperly.
Periodically test solenoid operation to assure that the valve closes completely when solenoid is disen-
gaged.

In-line strainers should be serviced periodically to assure that system is free from foreign materials.

Notice:
Piping system should be thoroughly flushed prior to operation. If systems are operated without proper
flushing, the solenoid diaphragm may become fouled and may not close properly when solenoid is dis-
engaged. All Solenoid Enclosures, Solenoids and Electrical Contact Enclosures are only offered as
Companion Units to the ICS.

MAPA Products cannot warrant solenoids and valve assemblies against the effects of hard water, corro-
sive agents, contaminants, or debris present in the piping system or against effects of exotic or harsh
substances.

Important!
All local electrical codes must be followed when installing this enclosure and making the wiring connec-
tions. Verify that the electrical supply is disconnected prior to making the wiring connections or servicing
enclosure.

Verify wiring requirements for MAPA Solenoid Enclosures (MSE-XX) for compliance with control device
specifications.

Caution: Do not connect wiring to control device other than as shown in wiring schematics.
Some MAPA Solenoid Enclosures (MSE-XX) require independent wiring for operation of the
solenoid independent from the control-wiring terminal on the controller. Refer to wiring sche-
matics provided with enclosure.

Wiring Information and Instructions:

Enclosures are provided with solenoid leads terminated at a terminal block and integral resets. Terminal
posts are labeled to correspond with output circuits from control device.

Caution: Connect 120 VAC or 24 VAC control wiring to input posts at terminal as stated on model
description.

Enclosures having solenoids with 120 VAC coil voltage may be provided with a panel-mounted relay.
Solenoid leads are connected to contact output terminal at each relay. Each relay is labeled to corre-
spond with output circuits from the control device. (See Diagram below for typical 120 VAC configura-
tion of components.)
Control power is obtained from the corresponding output circuits.

Caution: Only connect 24 VAC control wiring to input terminal at relays.

Grounding: 120 VAC Enclosures should be grounded by terminating service ground wire to en-
closure at grounding lug.

Note: Some multi-station solenoid units that exceed control device output max., restrictions may require
120 VAC line voltage in addition to the provided 24 VAC control wiring. Contact MAPA Products for
specific voltage requirements for multi-station units.

Electrical Pedestals Overview

MAPA Products primary focus is on solutions to Common Problems within the
construction industry.
Our Roof Top Pedestals are an excellent example of one of these Solutions. The MAPA rooftop Ped-
estal Disconnect was introduced as an alternative to multiple penetrations for electrical connections to
roof top equipment. The water tight shroud allows for installation with our standard deck flashing or an
optional Deck Cap rather through a typical pitch pocket.

MAPA Products Design:

Utilizes a sturdy stainless steel shroud with an 16x16 stain-

less steel upper deck flashing or an optional Deck Cap.

Installed through the roof penetration and secured with an un-

der-deck flange to prevent movement within the penetration.

Rain proof pedestal penetrations for all attached features.

Optional Pedestal Assemblies:

Disconnects
Starter/Disconnects
Utility lighting and electrical outlet.

Optional Flashings:

16x16 stainless steel upper deck flashing or an optional 12x12-Deck Cap.

Electrical Pedestals Overview

Penetration is made in the roof decking, centered on an angle frame welded to the roof structure, place
the pedestal base squarely onto the roof surface or curb, plumb and square the pedestal with the ser-
vice in the desired direction. Install hardware, secure the Under-Deck Clamp to the pedestal shroud and
the angle frame to prevent the pedestal from becoming dislodged from the roof membrane during opera-
tion. Finalize the installation by making the appropriate connections.

(Refer to product installation guide provided with pedestal for complete details.)

Electrical Pedestals
MPD Series / Pedestal Disconnects
The MAPA Products Fusible Rainproof Pedestal Mounted Safety Switch provides local disconnect of the
electrical service at roof mounted equipment. Disconnects are available in General Duty or Heavy Duty
Series. The stainless shroud with integrally welded deck flange enables a positive weather-tight flash of
the unit to the roof membrane without the need for additional flashing or pitch-pan. The need to interrupt
electrical service remotely in the case of equipment change-out can be avoided since service disconnect
is mounted adjacent to rather than onto the equipment.
Features:
The Standard Stainless Steel Shroud extends below the upper flange an additional twelve inches to per-
mit the unit to be securely fastened to the roof structural members by securing the under-deck mounting
flange to a welded deck flange. The roof flange is provided with fastening hardware to enable the install-
er to secure the flange first against the shroud and then onto a deck flange.
Pedestals are furnished completely assembled with Safety Switch and wiring leads. Leads for connec-
tion to the power source below the roofline are shielded in Flexible Metal Conduit. Wiring service for the
optional GFCI is provided in a separate flexible conduit. Wiring and Conduit sizes are according to in-
dustry standards and NEC. All connections exposed to weather are made liquid tight. Optional termina-
tion cables are available in five (5) or ten (10) foot lengths. We recommend using support devices such
as MAPA Strut Supports when a distance between the Pedestal and the service equipment exceeds
three feet.
An available control port when mounted on the surface of the shroud enables
control wiring to be installed exterior of the roof-top equipment. Service conduit
with a pull-string extends from the port to beneath the roof structure for easy
accessibility. A drillable plug permits the installer to size the penetration to that
of the control cable. The control cable should be fastened to the electrical ser-
vice cable or other rigid member.

All safety switch disconnects are furnished with a NEMA 3R Rainproof enclo-
sure. The switch is provided with handle suitable for padlocking in the OFF po-
sition. Defeat-able front accessible door prevents opening of door when in ON
position or turning the switch ON when the door is open. (Fuses are field pro-
vided)
Optional Features:

ICS / Industrial Control Station
Application:
The ICS utilizes a programmable board for restrictive
control of individual circuits; this allows the designer
the ability to provide multiple level, restrictive control
of single or dual output circuits. In many cases sys-
tems have to be designed on an individual basis with
a variety of manufactures products pieced together;
generally involving a number of different disciplines.

The unit is assembled using UL components, but is

not UL Listed. For UL Listed version contact ISIMET
at 903-897-0737; reference UL LA-Series Controller ICS-1212
Recommended Uses:
Motor Controls Industrial Machinery and Utility Services Residential Outdoor Grills
Shop Environments Home/Condo Startup and Shutdown Assisted Living Centers
Multi-Dwelling Utility Control Spa/Sauna/Steam Control

Multiple Levels of Control:

Automation or timed enabling and disabling of controlled device or utility.
Supervisory, the momentary keyed aspect of the ICS unit allows the controlled device or utility
to be available only when allowed by a designated supervisor.
User, once enabled the standard user may operate normal manner, as well as turn off the unit
when the controlled device or utility is no longer needed.

In the event of an emergency any level may disable the ICS unit by engaging the panic button or
through alarm notification.

The 120 VAC output circuits are available with an internal 15 amp rated relay. The momentary panic
button will deactivate the circuit upon pressing, requiring re-keying to reactivate. Unlike common
latching type relay operated controls, the ICS obtains positive deactivation in case of power failure.

Features:
Panic Button: Disengages the system-requiring key activation to re-engage.
Key Switch: Activates the system each time a circuit is to be engaged.
Control Switch Activates circuit(s) with key activation or deactivates to OFF.
Panel Mounted LED Indicates that System is Active.

Snap-N-Strut Clamps
Additional information on available models, sizing and load limits can be
found on the Snap-N-Strut Selection Chart on the following page.

The design of the Snap-N-Strut Clamps makes them the perfect accessory
to MAPA Products Nylon and Stainless Strut Supports and Bridging Sys-
tems.

Snap-N-Strut Clamps and Strut Nuts are produced from a high performance
UV stabilized 6/6 nylon resins possessing exceptional long-term stress re-
sistance and chemical stability over a wide range of temperatures. SNS-(____)

The hinged, snap-on lock arm adjusts for pipe O.D. variations, affording each hanger the ability to ac-
commodate several different pipe sizes.

The upper and lower engagement plates are designed to grip the strut and
restrain lateral movement along its length. When the pipe is inserted into
the hanger, the hanger can no longer turn. Thus, even the need for a lock
nut is eliminated.

With a totally non- metallic design, there is no need to isolate copper tub- Strut Nuts thread-
ing. Eliminating the concern for galvanic corrosion. ed for 3/8 rod

The nature of the nylon material utilized, combined with the uniquely engineered design, absorbs vi-
bration and acts as a cushion between the piping and its supporting structure.

Stainless Pipe Clamps MSC-(___)

These stainless steel pipe clamps are ideally suited for applications
where moisture is prevalent and corrosion is of concern.

A removable rubber cushion provides for separation of dissimilar met-

als and vibration dampening. Removing the rubber cushion will in-
crease accepted pipe diameter by one size.

All clamps have 3/8 threaded collar welded to the base.

Stainless steel pipe clamp
Utilizing these clamps in commercial kitchens provides a practical with rubber cushion
way to secure exposed domestic water piping and drain lines below
and behind stainless steel kitchen equipment.

These clamps may also be utilized in mechanical and boiler rooms to support smaller domestic water
piping and conduit. The stainless pipe clamp, a length of stainless steel all thread rod, a Strut Nut and
a section of aluminum strut combine to provide a corrosive resistant mounting system to support pip-
ing away from the wall surface.

Structural Support Bracing for Pedestals where height is
48 above the roof. Additional structural bracing should be
utilized where vertical sway is detected. Attachment points
are provided on both sides and rear of the pedestal for
these connections utilizing a rigid strut design.

Installation Sequence:

Once the installation of the Electrical Pedestals is complete, install the Structurally Attached Single Post
Support Bases.
Make penetrations where applicable through roof membrane, insulation and deck to structural mem-
ber(s) to which supports are to be attached. Use the provided support base template on roof sur-
face at the designated support location.
As designated by the project engineers specifications and/or roofing manufacturer recommenda-
tion; remove roof membrane from support perimeter and/or remove insulation to expose roof deck.
Replace insulation with structural blocking as specified by the design engineer. The use of structur-
al blocking transfers load directly to the structure allowing for increased loads not exceeding 500
lbs. as approved by the structural engineer.
From underside of the roof structure, secure support to structural members with provided Under
Deck Plate or other structural support bracing as designated by the project engineers specifica-
tions.
Attach Field Provided standard 1 5/8 slotted strut to the pedestal at attachment points and the Sin-

Pipes and Temperature Expansion

Thermal expansion in a pipe is the product of the coefficient of thermal expansion, the length and the
temperature difference from the start and final temperature of the pipe.

The expansion can be calculated by using the following equation.

The general expansion formula can be ex-

pressed as: Example - Thermal Expansion of Heat-
ed Alloy Steel
E=eL(T2 T1)
Where
100 feet of alloy steel pipe is heated from 32 to
E = Expansion, ft
212oF.
e = Coefficient of thermal expansion
L = Length of pipe, ft
The expansion coefficient is 7.3 10-6 (inch/inchoF).
T2 = Final temperature, oF
T1 = Initial temperature, oF
The expansion can be expressed as:
Thermal expansion coefficients for some common E= (8 10-6 in/inoF)(100 feet) (12 in/ft) (212 - 32 oF)

Summary
SX 304 is the most versatile and the most widely used of all stainless steels. Its chemical composition, mechanical properties, weld
ability and corrosion/oxidation resistance provide the best all-around performance stainless steel at relatively low cost. It also has
excellent low temperature properties and responds well to hardening by cold working. The properties quoted in this publication are
typical of mill production and unless indicated should not be regarded as guaranteed minimum values for specification purposes.

NO DRAIN, NO WINTERIZE
Executive Roof Hydrant
Installation Instructions
Freezeflow hydrants are designed for heavy-duty commercial use where safe potable water
is needed. This hydrant drains into a reservior below the roof line to prevent freeze ups and
eliminates the need for a drain line or winterization.

Model# 2131RE INSTALLATION

1. Using the lower flange as a template, cut a 4" hole
6.75" and (4) 5/8 bolt holes through rough deck.

2. Install Hydrant in through roof deck aligning bolt

holes in the upper flange with the 5/8" holes cut in the
roof deck.
3. Install lower flange from underneath the roof deck
and secure with flat washer, lock washer and nut.

4. IMPORTANT! Attach supply line to inlet of

33.5" hydrant making certain not to turn the 1"NPT brass inlet
fitting as this will crack the female mating flange inside
25" the hydrant, causing it to leak.
