IP MaGIS # 2: Understands specific Cultural Patterns

Context:

1. How culture defines its sense of self?

Everybody has a sense of self or sense of personal identity. In fact

most people have a number of important ways of thinking about themselves
that are significant enough to be considered multiple senses of self. Our
sense of self includes those roles, attributes, behaviours, and associations
that we consider most important about ourselves.

Our values form and shift as we live life and our life conditions keep
changing. With new experiences, new knowledge, and natural human
maturing over the lifespan, the new life conditions that result cause us to
look at ourselves and the world differently, and we begin to value things in a
different way. Things we have thought to be good, beautiful, wise, or evil
may not look the same as we grow. Because we are evolving, growing
beings and because we move through clear stages of development, what we
hold to be important may change over the course of our lives, and so, our
sense of self, of who we are, can change as well, and we can move toward
greater refinement and greater clarity about our sense of our self.

Culture defines sense of self by means of helping every individual to

develop and strengthen their behaviour and mental processes in the world.
Culture is the main factor in knowing ones self deeply. It makes every
person discover their personality. It is our basis in knowing the aspects why
we behave, think, and feel in that way. Indeed culture is the reason why we
all have a sense of self.

2. How culture dresses and values its appearances?

- Culture is an on-going process and tradition it doesnt stop in evolving,

because it is the combination of different ideas and beliefs shared in the
society and as the people grows culture will also develop. Culture is
significant because it is our basis in knowing our identity. When a person
searches for his/her self, culture is the best basis in knowing ones self.

3. How culture embraces specific beliefs and attitudes?

As human beings, we all have our own values, beliefs and attitudes
that we have developed throughout the course of our lives. Our family,
friends, community and the experiences we have had all contribute to our
sense of who we are and how we view the world. Beliefs come from real
experiences but often we forget that the original experience is not the same
as what is happening in life now. Our values and beliefs affect the quality of
our work and all our relationships because what you believe is what you
experience. We tend to think that our beliefs are based on reality, but it is
our beliefs that govern our experiences.

The beliefs that we hold are an important part of our identity. They
may be religious, cultural or moral. Beliefs are precious because they reflect
who we are and how we live our lives. Beliefs and attitude are outcomes of
culture, when there is a culture there is also a belief and an existing attitude.
Beliefs and attitudes depend on the kind of culture that is present in a
certain place or society. For example we I cannot conclude that my belief
and attitude is dominant because every person have different world views.
Therefore culture embraces beliefs and attitudes by means of respecting one
another.

4. How does culture relays to family and significant others?

There are many ways in transmitting my own culture to family

and to significant others. First way of passing or sharing culture is by
means of communication, we communicate in many it can be in social
media, interacting, affiliating and by simply talking to others.

Culture is an on-going process therefore as I live, everything

that I do will also be experience by others and somehow it may
influence them. Passing or sharing of culture happens spontaneously
because everything counts.

While interacting with people from other cultures, an individual

generally faces certain obstacles, which are caused by differences in
cultural understanding between the two people in question. For
example, showing the thumb held upwards in certain parts of the
world means "everything's okay," while it is understood in some
Islamic countries as a rude sexual sign.

5. How does culture plays and makes use of the leisure time?

It depends on the things that we do. It is everything that we do

in our freedom. Culture shapes us in many ways, for example our
hobbies are influenced by our culture. In my experience in the one of
the culture in the Philippines is playing basketball, therefore during my
free time I used to play basketball with my friends and thats a perfect
illustration of culture. What I am doing from this very moment is
considered as a culture.

6. How does culture learns and uses knowledge?

From the moment that we are born in this world, we are making
culture. Our culture is shared with other culture and that results with
the formation of another culture, because culture doesnt stop in
forming and shaping us. Culture uses knowledge by means of
determining the things or aspects of where we came from. By the use
of culture we are able to know why do we behave, think, or feel this
way.

7. How does culture communicate and uses language?

We are able to impart ourselves to others because of our own

culture. The way we behave, think and feel is mainly because of the
influence of our culture. In the society, countless of different cultures
are present. We are able to know our differences and uniqueness
because of culture. By just looking at our own culture we will be able
to know and understand others.

8. How does culture embraces a certain values and mores.

Values are principles, standards or qualities that an individual or

group of people hold in high regard. These values guide the way we
live our lives and the decisions we make. A value may be defined as
something that we hold dear, those things/qualities which we consider
to be of worth. A value is commonly formed by a particular belief that
is related to the worth of an idea or type of behaviour. Culture
influences our values. It is the culture that builds up our values in life
it guides us in discerning the values that will represent us.
9. How does culture uses time and space?

Every individual has different views of time. Some people values their
time and not wasting every single time, some people are lazy who doesnt
mind about the time, some people views time as a motivation to do work and
some are just stagnant about their time. Culture is interconnected with time
because culture evolves every time.
10. How does culture eats and uses food as its costumes?

Culture tackles everything even food. One of the best aspects of

culture is food. Every food that we eat is a product of culture. For example,
the Spaniards discovered a lot of herbs and spices in the Philippines that they
used in cooking delicious foods that are still present today. Food represents
culture because by simply knowing the kind of food that we eat, our
personality can be determined.

11. How culture works and applies itself.

Everyone has their own personal culture, and they can change it
anytime. Culture runs in our life style. Some people do things well, others
dont, thats how culture works, it gives us ideas and instructions on how to
live life and we tend to imitate other cultures that can be beneficial for us or
useless for us. The best thing about culture is that it gives us chances to
improve and develop ourselves into a better person.

Experience

I feel satisfied and enlightened as I searched deeper meanings about

culture. I feel that I accomplished something that is worth it and beneficial,
especially in my studies and in my life style. Lastly I am really grateful that I
have given an effort in finding information about culture because it is really
useful.
Reflection

I think that culture shapes us, and we also shape culture. Culture
guides us and it may also confuse us but at the end of the day culture makes
us who we are. We all have the responsibility to discover more about our
culture for us to grow. Culture makes us fully human.

Action

I believe that we all have our own personal culture. We gather

different ideas and beliefs in the society that makes us grow and evolve as a
human being. Our own culture makes us unique and different from the
others, we all have our own views and understanding about the world.

Experience

I cant point out three significant learning because everything that I

read about culture is truly significant. I discovered that culture is the main
factor on how we should live and manage our life style. Culture makes us
think of the things that are needed or accepted in the society, it makes us
aware of the things that are happening in the world.
Culture allows us to grow maturely and rationally. All we have to do is
to never stop exploring more about ourselves and the society. We can imitate
other culture and we can also make our own culture and influence others.
All in all, the most important thing in studying culture learning how to
live a life that is worth living.
