MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

Introduction

Medical tourism can be broadly defined as provision of 'cost effective' private medical
care in collaboration with the tourism industry for patients needing surgical and other
forms of specialized treatment. This process is being facilitated by the corporate sector
involved in medical care as well as the tourism industry - both private and public.

Medical tourists are generally residents of the industrialized nations of the world and
primarily come from
The United States
Canada,
Great Britain,
Western Europe,
Australia,
Middle East.

But more and more, people from many other countries of the world are seeking out
places where they can combine vacationing and obtaining their medical care at an
affordable cost.

The medical tourism in India has been increasing every year for the spectrum of
treatments that are being offered in most major hospitals which are:-
Cardiac Surgery
Orthopedics
Gynecology
Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery
Obesity surgery
Ophthalmology
Dentistry
Urology

MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

Purpose of Research on Medical Tourism

For most people needing medical care, the last thing on their minds is travel but a
growing number of medical tourists are setting out for India, Thailand and Latin America
for health treatment. Rising health care costs in the some countries like US and Europe
etc is the major factor as per the study for medical tourism .

The purpose of research is to study the factors which may or may not effect the medical
tourism industry of India apart from the cost factor.
Basic purpose is to research for reasons apart from cost to increase medical tourism in India .

We have done the secondary research on medical tourism industry of India as well as of
other countries for knowing about the major factor why or why not the people come to
foreign country for medical treatment.

MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW

Research has been done in various countries for the emerging challenges and future
prospects of medical tourism.

As per the analysis of secondary research we can say that people travel to India for
medical treatment because of the Cost factor. But Variables like quality of medical care,
medical services, and country infrastructure and other factors etc has not been studied
much to increase medical tourism in India.

Gaps existing in study

Variables like below has not been tested to improve the medical tourism in India:

Immigration facility
Post treatment
Patient Safety
Doctor Qualification
Hygiene
Premedical Facility
Country Infra
Medical support staff
Availability of doctor
Climate
Travel
Hospital marketing
Peer Exp

The above variables and factors have not been study much in relation to medical
tourism industry. Thus, in the medical tourism market, considering the above factors is
very important for India to study and gain more share of medical tourism industry.

MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH PROJECT

The objective of the proposed Research project is to study the effect of perceived
medical quality, service quality and country facilities in increasing the medical tourism in
India.
We can do research of the above constructs by focusing on variables like
Variables :

Immigration facility
Post treatment
Patient Safety
Doctor Qualification
Hygine
Premedical Facility
Country Infra
Medical support staff
Avalaibility of doctor
Climate
Travel
Hospital marketing
Peer Experience

In line with our objectives, following is the hypothesis we will test to fill the gaps we find
in the literature review:

Hypothesis
H1: Medical quality affects medical tourist to choose India for medical care..
H2: Medical service quality affects medical tourist to choose India for medical care.
H3: Country facilities affects medical tourist to choose India for medical care.

Research Methods
To understand the factors affecting the medical tourism industry, we
conducted the survey based research to understand the people responses to

the factors other than cost which they consider for travelling to other country
for medical tourism.

Reliability Testing
For designing of effective questionnaire, we circulated draft questionnaire
and collected our primary data for analysis questionnaire reliability and
analyzed the data for CRONBACH Alpha reliability test. The value of
CRONBACH alpha was found to be 0.896, as per literature >0.7 value for
Cronbach alpha data is reliable.

Factor Analysis
We have performed factor analysis to determine the relevance of each
variable . And as per the results we have created three constructs .

14
MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

From the above pattern matrix we came to conclusion to form the three
constructs based on the above variables.

We decided on the following 3 constructs

Medical Quality
Medical Service quality
Country factors.

And also identified decision variables to test the above 3 constructs on the
basis of below var.

Discussion

As outlined previously there are three constructs Medical Quality, Medical Service and
Country facilities and services , which were tested to find out if these are important
factors which should be considered for increase in medical tourism of country .
23
MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

Implications:

The three main hypotheses were the following:

1. Whether Medical quality affects medical tourist to choose India for medical care..
We tested three variables and found that for the all three variables defining the
above construct the t value is coming to be more than .05 for the 95% confidence
interval and test value = 3. So we can conclude that H1 holds true and should be
accepted .
In other words . Medical Quality is important factor for increasing the medical
tourism in the India.

2. Whether Medical service affects medical tourist to choose India for medical care..
We tested four variables and found that for the out of four for three of the
variables defining the above construct the t value is coming to be more than .05
for the 95% confidence interval and test value = 3. So we can conclude that H2
holds true and should be accepted .
In other words . Medical Service is important factor for increasing the medical
tourism in the India.

3. Whether Country factors and services affects medical tourist to choose India for
medical care.. We tested four variables and found that for the out of four for
three of the variables defining the above construct the t value is coming to be
more than .05 for the 95% confidence interval and test value = 3. So we can
conclude that H2 holds true and should be accepted .
In other words . Country factors and services is important factor for increasing
the medical tourism in the India.

Overall , we can say that factors other than cost benefits are also important for
increasing the Medical tourism of the country .

Limitations:
With our research, we could not identified segments of the people getting affected.

Future Research:
The Indian medical tourism industry is presently at a blossoming stage, but has an
enormous potential for future growth and development. Indias medical tourism sector is
expected to experience an annual growth rate of 30%, The Indian Government can play

24
MEDICAL TOURISM IN INDIA

a significant role in enhancing the benefits of medical tourism by develop supporting

infrastructure, hygienic condition, trained doctor and manpower in sufficient number and
information channels to facilitate medical tourism.

Conclusions
We hypothesized 3 hypotheses about the increase in medical tourism in India by
focusing on Medical Quality provided , Medical Services provided and Country factor
and services like immigration , infrastructure etc. suggested that the patients do
consider all these factors also apart from cost before choosing the medical tourism
destination . So for India to improve the medical tourism industry they should work on
these factors as well.
