G.I.J.O.E.

RECRUITMENT & MEMBERSHIP

Recruitment & Eligibility: Positions in GIJOE are open to any member of the five armed services in the pay-grade of E-4 or above, provided they fulfill the job-specific requirements for
available positions in the agency and are eligible for TOP SECRET security clearance (waiverable to SECRET security clearance at the discretion of the agency director). Selected
applicants are seconded from their parent units with the joint approval of the President and the secretary of the respective service. Successful military applicants incur a three-year
obligatory term of service with the agency. Applications for an extension of the term of service can be submitted to the office of the director six months prior to the term's expiration.
Civilian employees are drawn from other federal government departments and agencies and in rare cases, from regional and local government agencies and the private sector.

Educational Requirements: Military applicants must have at minimum an associate's degree from a recognized post-secondary
educational institution (or an equivalent number of college credits; conversion of military experience to college credit accepted). Civilian
applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

Training: All selected applicants for potential entry into the agency will have been chosen for the training and experience they already
possess prior to application, thus significantly reducing agency training costs. Civilian applicants with no prior military or law enforcement
small arms and personal defense training must pass a comprehensive three week long firearms familiarization and self-defense course
prior to attending the Skills Training/Expert Learning (STEEL) Program at Fort Wadsworth. All selected military and civilian applicants are
required to pass the six month-long STEEL Program for acceptance into GIJOE (no waivers). The program consists of intensive
theoretical and practical coursework in information operations topics as well as a comprehensive resilience training regimen. Applicants
for positions in the Command & Control, Analysis & Control, Multi-disciplinary Intel Collection, and Reconnaissance Elements must also
successfully pass SERE Level-C and Individual Terrorism Awareness training at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center & School.
The STEEL Program has a 97% attrition rate, with most program withdrawals occurring within the first three months of training. Failed
applicants are allowed one opportunity to re-try for the agency, which they must exercise within two years of their first application.

surgeons and speech therapists. Placed on the Temporary Disability Retirement List in 2002. Immediate family killed in a vehicular accident later that same year.
Spent the ensuing period in Japan studying Arashikage-ryū bujutsū with Thomas Arashikage's clan. Returned to active duty (with assignment limitations owing to his
vocal impairment) in 2007. Sent to Afghanistan in 2008, engaging Taliban fighters in the country's northeast alongside ISAF special operations forces. Fluent in
American Sign Language and Japanese. Besides Arashikage-ryū bujutsū, also schooled in the Kodokan judo, Lacoste-Inosanto kali, muay thai, Seigokan Gōjū-ryū

Trojans to their first NCAA tournament appearance in five years. Bypassed the 1997 NBA draft in the hopes of mounting another NCAA tournament campaign. Tore
his right ACL ligament at the beginning of his senior year and sat out the rest of the season after undergoing surgery. Went undrafted in the 1998 NBA draft (obtained
copies of scouting reports cite concerns by NBA general managers over potential lingering effects of his knee injury despite extensive physical rehabilitation). Signed
by the Vancouver Grizzlies to a series of 10-day contracts halfway through the lockout-shortened 1998-1999 NBA season. Moved to Italy in 1999 to play for Kinder

the events in 1979 that came to be known as the Three Mile Island accident. Against such a backdrop, the precocious Schnurr had what could only be called a
peculiar childhood. Instead of monsters under the bed and closet-dwelling ogres, the young Kurt's bedtime bogeymen were the twin specters of reactor meltdown
and nuclear fallout. Enlisted in the Army in 2002 after graduating with a degree in public health from SCSU. Assigned to the 22 nd Chemical Battalion (Technical
Escort) after completing CBRN specialist AIT. In late 2003, attached to the US-backed multinational Iraq Survey Group (ISG), conducted fact-finding and NBC
reconnaissance operations throughout Iraq in search of functional Iraqi WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). Returned to his parent unit in 2005 after the ISG
concluded in its final report that “[there was no] evidence that Saddam [Hussein] possessed WMD stocks in 2003”. Joined the elite 801st Chemical
Reconnaissance Detachment in 2007. Frequently jokes that he joined the Chemical Corps largely in the interest of self-preservation, citing that Chemical Corps
soldiers have the most ready access of any person in the United States to HAZMAT suits in the event of a catastrophic CBRN incident. Analysis of incidental
records of his personal interactions with GIJOE teammates seem to indicate that his choice in military career was at least partially motivated by childhood anxieties
that have been sublimated into a healthy respect for the attendant risks that come with living in a post-Atomic Age world.

liaison officer and translator for a contingency Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST) assigned to the 2006 Winter Olympic Games held in Turin, Italy. Helped
coordinate diplomatic, military, and law enforcement efforts to ensure the successful release of abducted American nationals in Ecuador and Nigeria in 2007. Joined

the military in 2001 in search of more formidable parachuting challenges, but quickly learned that the life of a soldier demands more than just a sense of daring
and adventure, it also requires a mature appreciation of civic duty and the responsibilities that come with representing the country as a professional fighting man in
the world's battlefields. Initially trained as a combat engineer, assigned to the 37th Engineer Battalion (Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade (Combat). Deployed to
northern Iraq in 2003, participated in engineering operations in support of the 101 st Airborne Division. Re-classed as an infantryman in 2005, transferred to the 1 st
Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment (Airborne). Was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division “All-American” Free Fall Parachute Demonstration Team in 2006.
Deployed along with other elements of the 82nd Airborne's newly activated 4th Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan in 2007 in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom. Continued to operate in-country through 2008. Plain-spoken and candid in conversation, which can sometimes be misconstrued for rudeness or naiveté.

Marine Expeditionary Force. Worked alongside Latvian and Polish Army elements in Al-Qādisiyyah governorate in 2006 and through 2007, conducted counter-IED
missions and trained local police bomb disposal teams in intermediate and advanced explosive ordnance clearance techniques. Taciturn and somewhat aloof,
generally prefers the solitude of the open sea over the company of his GIJOE teammates whenever possible.

Miscellaneous Notes: The scion of a moneyed New England family, had a largely sheltered upbringing surrounded by affluence. Spent his first few years out of
college traveling the world, occasionally writing dispatches for The National Geographic Magazine. Firsthand exposure to the effects of the brutal ethnic
conflicts that characterized the socio-political landscape of countries such as Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia throughout the mid-1990s had a profound
effect on his outlook on life. Entered the US Army OCS in 1997. Disputes that personal or collective guilt prompted the decision, maintains that it was the
