Project WX Monthly Weather Summary

for the Hofstra University WeatherSTEM Stations

Prepared by Dr. Jase Bernhardt

Dept. of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability

February 2017

Notes: Normals data are for Farmingdale Republic Airport (KFRG).

Summary: February 2017 followed the theme of the rest of meteorological winter (defined as
December-February) with well-above normal temperatures. February was 7.3 F above normal,
with only a brief stretch during the middle of the month experiencing temperatures close to
normal. Several inches of snow fell on the 8th, and this storm was accompanied by the coldest air
of the month. A significant rainfall occurred on the 25th, directly following the warmest period of
the month-- consecutive days where the maximum temperature exceeded 60 degrees, and the
minimum temperature was greater than the normal maximum for the day.
Temperature: The average temperature for the month was 47.3 F, 6.1 above the normal of
41.2. The maximum observed temperature was 64.7 on the 19th, and the minimum temperature
was 17.4 on the 9th.
Precipitation: 0.71 of precipitation fell during the month, below the normal monthly
precipitation of 2.45. The maximum daily precipitation was 0.43 on the 25th.
Other Notes: The highest wind gust recorded by the station was 46 miles per hour on the 13th.
Although the weather stations do not record snowfall, several inches of snow fell on the 9th due
to a coastal storm system. Daily minimum temperatures were 8.4 degrees above normal, a
highly-anomalous amount, and the month has a whole was quite warm.

How to Access the Hofstra University Project WX Weather Stations Online:

Go to https://nassau-ny.weatherstem.com/hofstrasoccer and select any of the three Project WX
weather stations from the WeatherSTEM Units dropdown menu. We recommend the Soccer
Stadium station which provides access to images from the Cloud Camera.
View a time-lapse movie of the sky from the previous day by selecting Sky Video in the banner
menu.
Select Data Mining from the Data menu to graph and download station data.
