ts a phone call that no one,
especially a pastor, wants to
receive. Your church is on
fire. However, thats exactly
the message Pastor Perry Scott
received the night of Feb. 21
when nearby residents called
to tell him that smoke was
seen coming from his church,
Restoration Ministries.
DeKalb County fire officials
called the incident an act of
arson.
Scott said he was on his
way to the churchs Tuesday
night Bible study when someone
notified him that the building was
on fire.
When Scott arrived at the
church he said he noticed
firefighters attempting to put
out a burning shed owned by
the church. As Scott continued

to look around the property, he
said he noticed branches and
debris in the front of the church.
Someone attempted to set the
church on fire, he said.
It was mind blowing. It was
raining that night and my heart
was heavy. I had some mixed
emotions at the time. I was really
frustrated, said Scott, recalling
the incident. My thoughts were
who could have done this and
why would they do something
like this?
According to DeKalb County
fire officials, investigators
were called to the scene. An
official with the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives said the department
does not comment on open
investigations but said four fires
were intentionally set, including
an attempted fire in front of the
churchs door.
The church, located at

4311 Mercer Road in Decatur,
cancelled the Bible study
session. Pastor Brenda Scott,
wife of Perry Scott, said she
couldnt believe someone tried
to set fire to the church.
There was a time when
churches were considered
sacred ground, Brenda Scott
said. You were almost afraid
to walk on the church grounds
because you held them in such
high regard. What puzzled me
is why they wanted to destroy
this property. Its amazing to me
that someone would do that to a
church.
Brenda and Perry Scott said
theyre not sure who could have
started the four fires on the
churchs property. Two additional
fires were set in woods near the
church. However, the Scotts
said they will continue to preach
a message of forgiveness
and compassion to their
championnewsPaper
congregation.
Perry Scott said with the
recent attacks on institutions
of various faiths, they consider
themselves lucky. In February,
a synagogue in Chicago had its
window smashed and marked
with swastika stickers. In Florida,
two mosques were hit by
arsonist attacks in the past five
months.
Restoration Ministries has
been in its Decatur location
since 2002. Perry Scott said the
arson incident wont slow the
church or its congregation down.
He said on Feb. 26 the church
intended to have a victory
service.
I have to admit that I was
angry. Anger came in, Perry
Scott said. But then I thought I
shouldnt think that way. Were
going to celebrate Sunday. It
could have been a lot worse.

New York doctor, Decatur center hope to cure learning disabilities

For New York doctor,
author and neuroscience
expert Robert Melillo, closing
achievement gaps in the
classroom begins with finding
balance in the brain.
Theres a lack of awareness
about problems, about the
epidemic we are seeing in
children with learning and
behavioral issues, Melillo
said. These problems can be
improved, if not completely
corrected, in a relatively short
period of time. Understanding
what the problem is, we find
a functional disconnection;
kids may have labelsADHD,
Aspergers, dyslexiabut its
all because of developmental
imbalance in the brain.
Melillo, who has authored a
college text book, 20 chapters
in other text books, five
bestselling books as well as
articles in medical journals,
is the co-founder of Brain
Balance Achievement Centers.
The centersone of which
recently opened at 2629 North
Decatur Road in Decatur
expect to help children
diagnosed with ADHD,
Asperger Syndrome, high
functioning autism, PDD-NOS,
dyslexia, processing disorders
and other spectrum disorders
in the areas of academics,

behaviors, sensory integration,
focus, friendships and
emotions.The center opened in
September 2016.
The Brain Balance
Achievement Centers arrival
comes a one month after City
Schools of Decatur (CSD)
students, parents, teachers and
administrators voiced concern
regarding the lack of resources
available to students classified
as dyslexic.
CSD officials revealed the
beginning of a plan to address
the issue in January following
public meetings in August
2016.
Melillo congratulated CSDs
efforts and for acknowledging
dyslexia is a valid problem. He

said most school systems have
a top-down approach to the
disability, where if a child has a
problem reading, for example,
the solution is not more
reading, but to stimulate the
brain to create a neurological
balance.
When you look at different
learning issues, dyslexia as a
whole, is the biggest problem,
Melillo said. About 15 to 20
percent of the population
has iteveryone, not just
students. About 85 percent
of learning disabilities come
from dyslexia. If you promote
exercises and can stimulate the
brain a certain way to create
that balance, dyslexia can go
away; weve worked with tens
of thousands of kids with
dyslexia, and in almost every
case, we have had cures.
By hosting individually
tailored afterschool activities
involving physical activity,
nutrition and sensory
stimulation, Melillo states
the centers can cure such a
disability by balancing brain
networks.
Most kids that we see,
their brain networks are not
balanced, Melillo said. An
area of the brain may be at an
extremely advanced statetwo,
three or four years beyond
their agebut on the other
side, there is a delay or lack of
maturity. Kids may develop
math skills at a 10th grade
level, but have reading skills
that are at a first-grade level.
The gap is a delay in maturity;
nothing is broken or damaged.
There is just a developmental
imbalance.
According to Melillo
and regional director Dana
Hernandez, the Brain Balance
Achievement Centers identify
the imbalance through a three-
hour assessment and develop
a program that targets their
weaknesses.
The programs have a
large emphasis on movement,
learning, motor skills and
cognitive development,
Melillo said. The relationship
between brain and movement
is something we emphasize.
Theres a lot of physical
activities. Then we have
students go to an academic
room to work with a teacher
related to the area they are
underdeveloped for two to
three times per week.
According to Hernandez,
the centerwhich has current
enrollment of approximately
20 students aged 4 to 17has
found incredible success.
We see children who
have never been invited to
a birthday party because
they have no friends start to
socialize, Hernandez said.
We see children who used to
take four to five hours to get
homework done get it done in
30 minutes to one hour.
Many of Melillos
methods can be recreated
at home through his books
Disconnected Kids and
Reconnected Kids, both of
which he talked about during a
visit to Agnes Scott College on
Jan. 31.
Hernandez lectured on
Feb. 23 and said parents in
attendance were supportive of
Melillos methods.
Dr. Melillo is a genius,
Hernandez said. Hes gotten
to the bottom of why kids are
struggling or may struggle
and been able to help. Hes a
forerunner in research.
Melillo said school systems
trying to help children should
research the relationship
between exercise, movement,
nutrition and learning.
Schools are limiting gym
and recess times while were
trying to encourage kids to get
off the computer and move
more, Melillo said. Take away
cell phones. Make kids go out
and play, interact and socialize.
Emphasize nutritionwere
getting better, but we need to
do more to understand the
importance.
Melillo said teachers
should begin to research
the neuroscience behind
disabilities instead of
judging a student as spiteful
or problematic. He said
recognizable left or right brain
deficiencies can be lessened

Native defends cyber attacks via US Navy
Jeffery Meyers, a Chamblee native and 1983
graduate of Chamblee High School is now helping
the United States Navy defend cyber attacks with the
latest technology.
Myers, who works in the Navy Reserves, serves
as a commander for Space and Warfare Systems
Command (SPAWAR), which develops, delivers and
keeps communication means for fighters. Hard-
ware and software needed to execute Navy missions
around the world is developed directly by SPAWAR.
This command allows me to continue the cama-
raderie of the Navy; while serving with this com-
mand, there is real time support to SPAWAR and the
fleet, Meyers said. It is a privilege to serve in the
Navy Reserves and I enjoy every second.
According to Navy officials, Meyers will work
with submarines in San Diego from the Navy Opera-
tional Support Center in Washington D.C.

Rotary Club donates 1,300 dictionaries
The Rotary Club of Stone Mountain (RCSM)
recently donated 1,300 dictionaries to 10 DeKalb
County elementary schools.
Avondale, Dresden, Dunaire, Hambrick,
Idlewood, Jolly, Livsey, McLendon, Smoke Rise,
Stone Mountain and Wynbrooke elementary
schools benefitted from RCSMs annual project,
which donates copies of the 540-page A Students
Dictionary to third-graders.
The goal of the program, initiated by The
Dictionary Project in 2007, is to assist students in
becoming writers, readers, imaginative thinkers and
resourceful learners, according to program officials.
The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use
at school and at home for years to come, officials
state. Educators see third grade as the dividing line
between learning to read and reading to learn, which
is why sponsors are encouraged to gift third-graders
with their very own dictionary.
RCSM meets every Tuesday at noon at Smoke
Rise Country Club, located at 4900 Chedworth

City to update public on comprehensive plan
City officials in Dunwoody will host a public
information session on March 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at
Dunwoody City Hall, located at 41 Perimeter Center
East.
The city of Dunwoody is currently updating
its Comprehensive Transportation Plan, which
outlines the communities transportation objectives
and funding priorities, officials state. The
purpose of the update is to review and refresh the
recommended project list and work program as well
as explore enhancements to plan components such
as pedestrian and bicycling facilities.
The public is encouraged to attend and give input
on the future of transportation in Dunwoody.

Dunwoody assistant city
attorney Lenny Felgin resigned
Feb. 1 following allegations
of anti-Muslim remarks on
Facebook.
Felgin, who represents
Dunwoody through Riley
McLendon, a metro Atlanta law
firm with contracts throughout
the city and DeKalb County,
allegedly posted derogatory
remarks about Muslims on a
Facebook thread on Jan. 30.
The thread in question
pertains to an article dealing
with Canada allowing refugees
into the country.
Though Felgin claims he
did not write the posts and
was hacked, he resigned the
following Wednesday from
Riley McLendon, thus ending
his involvement with the city of
Dunwoody.
On Feb. 13, Dunwoody
Mayor Denis Shortal made
a statement about the issue
before a city council meeting.
Our community has
recently experienced an
incident which rightfully
caused deep concern among
our citizens, Shortal said.
A couple of weeks ago the
city became aware of an
inappropriate social media post
allegedly posted by our former
city attorney, who works for
a contracting firm. One of
the precepts of our nation
is that everyone is innocent
until proven guilty without
reasonable doubt, so that
required us to proceed with
great diligence to do what is
right for everyone, gather the
facts, and treat everyone fairly
and justly.

One Christmas, Brenda
Scott recalled, the church
provided a family with gifts and

Christ and the things that were
done to him...he stayed on

In the Clarkston Community
Center roughly 250 people
expressed concern about
President Donald Trumps
policies regarding refugees and
immigration.
In an event hosted by
Congressman Hank Johnson
and Clarkston Mayor Ted
Terry on Feb. 12, refugees
shared stories of how Trumps
travel restrictions targeting
predominately Muslim
countries affect their lives.
First of all, people dont
want to be profiled based on the
way they look or the garb they
may be wearing, Johnson said.
Theres real apprehension
on the level of hostility about
Muslims and refugees.
Federal judges blocked
Trumps initial travel ban,
which was signed Jan. 27
and banned entry for 90 days
by citizens from Iraq, Syria,
Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan
and Yemen. The order also
indefinitely halts refugees from
Syria.
Currently, Trump is in the
process of crafting new travel
restrictions.
Of the nearly 250 people
in attendance, Johnson said
he believed roughly 45
percent were either Muslim,
immigrants or living under
refugee status.
Those people love this
country, Johnson said. It was
a meeting about their fears
and concerns and love for this
country and desire to live in
peace.
During the meeting,
Johnson said several refugee
aid organizations came to assist
those with concerns.
Refugees are not a
burden to Clarkston and they
are certainly not a burden
to America. In Clarkston,
they have a 91 percent self-
sufficiency rate within 180
days, said Terry during
the event. The current
administration in the White
House is deliberately cutting in
half the number of refugees that
will arrive in the United States
in the next year.

Former refugee and staff
member at Lutheran Services
of Georgia Aimee Zangandou
was also a panelist. The
services help refugees relocate
in Georgia and provide rice
to refugees through an annual
event.
Zangandou said theres
still work to be done to help
refugees.
Its real personal. The
work itself is rewarding. You
have people gain a sense of
a home and a real sense of
freedom. For some its the first
step to rebuilding their life,
Zangandou said. We have to
do more work and advocate for
our refugees.
Zangandou, who has been
in the United States for two
decades, said she believes
refugees are already highly
vetted when coming to
America.
The president has put
refugee issues in the forefront.
Theres been a harsh backlash
on refugees in this country,
Zangandou said. I think
people need to understand that
refugees are some of the most
vetted group of immigrants.
Johnson, who represents
areas of DeKalb County,
said hes impressed with the
way Clarkston welcomes its
refugees and immigrants.
Clarkston has been ground
zero for refugee resettlement
in Georgia and it was a natural
place to host this event. Its a
growing phenomenon that has
taken place in the 4th District
and public officials are coming
together to support each other,
Johnson said.

Lifeline eager for new DeKalb animal shelter

A new DeKalb County animal shelter has been years
in the making. The completion of the shelter is set for
May of this year and officials say it will be a better way
to care for animals and more likely to result in permanent
homes.
Karen Hirsch, public relations director for Lifeline
Animal Project, said adoptions should increase and the
life of the animals in the projects care should improve
once the shelter is complete.
Well for one, we will be able to hold more animals
at the new shelter, which is great, Hirsch said. Space
is always an issue and it will allow us to keep fewer
animals in each run.
Lifeline Animal Project took control of DeKalb
Countys shelter in 2013 along with Fulton Countys
animal shelter. Hirsch said the new shelter will have a
better look and feel for potential adopters.
The DeKalb animal shelter is really ugly and scary
and people just dont like to come in there. The new
shelter is going to be pretty and more open and that
will change the way people think during the adoption
process, Hirsch said.
The shelter, located at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody
Road, will be 33,440 square feet on 5.3 acres of
land. More than 30 workers with Reeves & Young
Construction are building the new facility. Stone
placement, curbing and gutter work is set to begin in
the coming weeks, according to a release from DeKalb
County.
The estimated cost for construction of the new shelter
is $10 million.
According to Hirsch, the DeKalb County Animal
shelter takes in roughly 20 to 40 animals per day but
adopts out an average of seven animals per day, five dogs
and two cats.
The new shelter holds 450 animals and that can
be a huge help. Right now we have four to five dogs in
each [caged area] and we have two to three adoption
counselors working in a small shared space, Hirsch said.
The shelter will feature 12 adoption rooms, space for
450 cats and dogs and an exercise yard. There will also
be an onsite clinic that will include a surgery and prep
room, lab area, pharmacy and a spay-and-neuter clinic.
Before the move to the new shelter, Hirsch said
Lifeline Animal Project hopes to adopt out all the animals
located at the DeKalb Animal Shelter.

Despite being found guilty
of violating the constitutional

Laidlaw filed a complaint
against Laskowski, accusing
the officer of unlawful seizure,
detention and searching during
a March 2014 traffic stop.
Laidlaw was 17 at the time of
the incident.
According to Laidlaws
suit, the 14-minute incident,
in which Laskowski searched
Laidlaws vehicle after stopping
him for speeding, was
pretextual and unlawful.
For [several] minutes,
Laskowski lectured Laidlaw
about the dangers of having
and being caught with
marijuana, the complaint
reads. [He] then advised
Laidlaw he was going to
put Laidlaw, who was a
minor at the time, in the
city of Dunwoodys system
as possibly, might be in
possession of marijuana and
anytime he was stopped in
Dunwoody, Laidlaw would be
red-flagged as possibly having
marijuana.
Laskowski did not find any
evidence of marijuana, nor
did he perform a field sobriety
test, according to Laidlaws
complaint. Laskowski allegedly
informed the then-teenager
that he had a number of
speeding tickets on his record,
which is false, according to
court records.
According to court
documents, Laskowksi
maintains he conducted a
lawful traffic stop with a verbal
warning. During the course of
the warning, he maintains he
observed from outside of the
vehicle and later found in the
vehicle [what] he believed to be
marijuana seeds, shake, stems
and leaf.
Laskowskis response to
the complaint states Laidlaw
admitted he had passengers
in the vehicle who smoked
marijuana.
On Oct. 27, judge Timothy
Batten Sr. with the Northern
District of Georgia granted
a six-month period in which
Laidlaw and Laskowski will
gather evidence. The period
ends on April 20, 2017.
Dunwoody settled
three lawsuits filed against
Laskowski as recently as
March 2016 totaling $135,000.

$45,000 after it was found that
Laskowski conducted similar,
unconstitutional searches
involving K-9 units and officers
from the Doraville Police

acknowledged any wrongdoing.
According to Muhammad,
who detailed his complaint on
a blog titled Dunwoody Police
Complaints in 2013, Laskowski
stopped him for a cracked
windshield and inactive
taillights.
The stop allegedly led to
Laskowski asking Muhammad
about guns, drugs and statistics
of officers shot in the Winters
Chapel Road area, which was
the area of the incident. He
then asked Muhammad if he
minded if he searched the
vehicle.
I respond that I do mind
and would like a citation for
the cracked windshield and
rear brake bulbs if that, in
fact, was the only reason I
was pulled over, Muhammad
states. The officer then states,
Youre making me nervous.
What made me nervous was
watching him approach my
vehicle unhooking the latch
to his weapon. I know this is
normal procedure, and racial
profiling is nothing new to me.
Laskowski radioed a K-9
Unit in the area to conduct
a sweep of the vehicle.
Muhammad was removed from
his vehicle and subject to a
thorough search after the K-9
supposedly indicated signs of
drugs to officers.
I was publicly humiliated
as passerbys staredsome of
them were my customers who
would later ask about what
happened, Muhammad said.
The entire debacle concluded
with the discovery of no drugs
and no weapons.
According to Dunwoody
Police Chief Billy Grogan,
the department has changed
its policies to require a
supervisors approval before
requesting a K-9 unit. In
August, Grogran told The
Champion he is aware of the
lawsuit and believes courts will
rule in Laskowskis favor.
Due to the pending
litigation, we cannot comment
on the facts of this case,
Grogan said. However, we are
confident that the evidence
in this case will result in a
finding in favor of the city
of Dunwoody and Officer
Laskowski.

Dinosaurs coming to
Stone Mountain Park

New prehistoric pals are at Stone Mountain Park and
officials are waiting to unveil them to the public, said park
officials.
On Feb. 22, park officials announced plans to introduce
the parks latest exhibit, Dinosaur Explore, which is set to
open March 30 and remain throughout 2017.
Most of our guests are probably too young to remember
the last time dinosaurs inhabited Stone Mountain Park, said
Michael Dombrowski, general manager of Stone Mountain
Park, in a statement. Our newest attraction brings the
wonder and excitement of these prehistoric animals back
to the park in a way that offers families a fun new way to
explore and learn.
The exhibit will feature 20 dinosaurs representing 14
species, a T. rex meet and greet, baby dinosaur interactions
and a dinosaur dig play area. Stone Mountain Park officials
planned the exhibit for roughly six to nine months, said park
spokesperson Jeanine Jones.
They have arrived, said Jones, laughing. Everyone is
really excited to have something new and to have something
fun. Everything has gone to the dinosaurs this year.
Stone Mountain Park will also replace the great barn
exhibit and feature the indoor Dinotorium. Inside the
Dinotorium, guests can interact with dino rangers, learn
about dinosaur habitats, visit the Dino Nursery, feed baby
dinosaurs and play games, according to Jones.
Twenty life-size dinosaurs will be on display throughout
the park. Jones said the dinosaurs will be on a wooded trail
to give the feel of the dinosaurs living environment.
You come up and you can see each dinosaur. Theyre
also motion sensored and they move and sound just like
they would in the prehistoric days. Very lifelike, Jones said.
Some of them are quite large. As soon as you enter the
park, a brachiosaurus is there to greet you.
The brachiosaurus is roughly two stories tall. The
collection of dinosaurs also includes a three-horned
triceratops, an allosaurus and a winged pteranodon.
The good thing is its not going to scare anyone. They
are family friendly so its not going to scare little children. I
think parents and even grandparents are going to get a lot out
of it. Its going to be a lot of fun, she said.
Park officials will also show a condensed version of the
movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 4D.

of Stonecrest says he was treated
unfairly during a recent forum.
Charles Hill said he was
accosted on stage by State
Representative and former
DeKalb County CEO Vernon
Jones during a Feb. 11 forum.
Hill, a graduate student
at Yale University, said he
was stopped from talking
about issues regarding fellow
candidate Jason Lary.
The debate started very
spirited. I began to talk about
Jason Lary and his connection
to (developer) Vaughn Irons
and almost immediately I was
stopped by Vernon Jones,
Hill said. Vernon runs up on
stage and acts like hes about
to do something to me and his
physical demeanor was almost
like he was about to jump on
me. He just started yelling and
screaming at me.
During a phone
conversation with The
Champion, Jones suggested a
reporter should interview the
other candidates in attendance
to determine if Hill was treated
unfairly.

DeKalb County School District approved a $3.1 million purchase for portable classrooms, despite its

DeKalb County School Districts (DCSD) board of
education approved the third consecutive multi-million
dollar purchase of portable classrooms on Feb. 13 despite
skepticism from board members.
The approved $3.1 million purchase will pay Mobile
Modular Management Corporation for an unstated number
of single-wide and quad unit portable classrooms, some with
and some without restrooms, in support of DCSDs summer
portable placement, future construction projects and to
replace aged modulars, according to DCSD Chief Operations
Officer Joshua Williams.
Board member Joyce Morley asked Williams how many
portable classrooms the district currently has and received a
non-specific response.
I can provide you with the number, I dont have it in
front of me at this time, Williams said. We do have some
portable classrooms that are in really bad shape that we
currently stage at our Panthersville location. We are in the
process of disposing of those, we do not believe they are
in any condition to put back into schools. Our intent is to
salvage what we can and maintain what we can.
According to documents obtained by The Champion,
the district has 29 modular classrooms in storage behind
Panthersville Stadium, located at 2817 Clifton Springs Road.
The documenta September 2016 Portables Inventory
states 29 portables are in good condition and listed as
surplus. It also states 29 are in bad condition and listed as
to be removed.
Williams said the district needs new portables to replace
outdated modulars and address capacity issues for upcoming
construction projects. He said the typical lifecycle of modular
classrooms is approximately 15 years.
Morley asked Williams if the board has the option to lease
rather than buy the temporary classrooms.
In the past, we have leased modular trailers, Williams
said. We believe, given the amount of work were going
to have and the service life, its in our best interest to
purchase them. Well reuse them as we go through phases of
construction projects over the next five years.
Board member Jim McMahan requested an updated
detailed inventory of modular classrooms in storage, in use
and those considered surplus. He also requested a detailed
list of the number of portables expected to be purchased.
Board member Marshall Orson also requested a
detailed inventory to help his decision making in approving
purchases.
Board member Stan Jester mentioned DCSDs most
recent Cross Keys Redistricting Plan in February 2016
reduced some portable classrooms and redistributed others.
Several of them are currently at Panthersville in a
condition that was not good enough to send to another
school, Williams said.
According to an email dated Feb. 16, Jester remains
unconvinced the purchase was necessary for the district.
In addition to storing trailers at Panthersville, I imagine
there are good trailers at some schools not being used,
Jester states. Dunwoody High is over capacity by 317
students while Cross Keys High is over by 86 students.
According to the [2016 Portables Inventory] Dunwoody
has four classrooms worth of trailers and Cross Keys has 15
classrooms worth of trailers. Perhaps the excess trailers at
CKHS will be used as swing space during the E-SPLOST V
conversion to a middle school.
The board of education approved a similar purchase of
$2.5 million in March 2016. At the time, Williams provided
the board of education with details as to which schools would
receive modular classrooms.
At the time, Williams stated DCSDs overall goal is to
phase out portable classrooms altogether.

vo-tech, Simama said. Technical
education, as the young folks say, is hot.
Its on fire. Todays technical education
requires advanced skill sets and
technological know-how.
For more than an hour on Feb.
23, community members and leaders
joined Simama, staff, other faculty
and students at GPTC for the schools
annual State of the College address.
Simama called GPTC the most
diverse college in Americawith
students who speak 100 different
languages from 80 different countries
and said it offers cutting-edge courses
to its student body.
Six courses specifically mentioned
by Simama include drone, film
production, advanced manufacturing,
3D printing, cyber forensics as well as
transit and transportation.
Simama said drones will be a $100
billion industry by 2020 with $13
billion coming from private businesses
and local government. He said the
schools technical college certificate
program, as well as non-credit courses,
will provide GPTC students an edge in
the industry.
Drone [students] are tech-ed today
at GPTC and a skilled workforce in
tomorrows industry, Simama said.
Georgias growing film industry
is another area the college excels in
readying students for, according to
Simama. He said the schools courses
prepare students in the $6 billion
industry, specifically for more than
5,000 jobs on the technical side of film
making.
Students who complete this
program will go on to complete on-set
internships on film and television sets,
Simama said.
Advanced manufacturing,
according to Simama, involves what
the nonprofit World Economic Foum
calls a fourth industrial revolution
involving digital and mobile platforms
reliant upon human connectivity.
He said GPTC strives to tap into this
revolution through apprenticeships
and partnerships with chambers of
commerce, public education and

Advanced manufacturing involves
extensive use of the latest generation in
technology to make something better
and it needs skilled people to operate
this technology, Simama said. To meet
the demands, were starting a German-
style apprenticeship where high school

Simama announced GPTC will be
launching its first 3D-printing course,
where students will learn to create
physical objects from a virtual model.
Students will leave this course
knowing how to convert plans and
specs into 3D models, Simama said.
This will be a game-changer in
industry and helping our economy.
Simama said cyber security will be
one of the most important industries
in the near future and that GPTC is
already training students to meet such a
demand.

announce GPTC is currently working
on plans to develop a regional
transportation training center,
complete with simulators and hands-
on laboratories for students hoping to

Six basketball teams
advance to Elite Eight

Six DeKalb County
basketball teams took another
step forward in playing for a
state championship.
The boys basketball teams
from Greenforest, Lithonia,
Miller Grove and St. Pius
advanced to the Elite Eight of
their respective classification
after wins in the second
round of the playoffs on Feb.
23. Southwest DeKalb and
Stephenson girls basketball
teams advanced to the next
round with wins in the second
round on Feb. 22.
Greenforest advanced to
the Elite Eight in the Class
A-Private playoffs after
defeating Mt. Paran 74-43.
Justin Forest led the team
with 14 points and five assists.
Jandan Duggan and David
Quimby each scored 12
points. The Eagles will face
Holy Innocents March 1.
The St. Pius Golden Lions
defeated Mary Persons in the
second round of the Class
AAAA playoff tournament to
advance to the Elite Eight. St.
Pius fought its way back from
a 25-20 first quarter deficit to
defeat Mary Persons 74-71.
The Golden Lions will face
Carver-Columbus March 1.
In Class AAAAA,
Lithonia and Miller Grove
will represent DeKalb in the
boys playoff tournament. The
Lithonia Bulldogs defeated
Riverdale 55-45 on the road in
the second round. Zion Cain
led the team with 18 points
and Christian Parker added
13. The Bulldogs will travel
to Athens to take on Cedar
Shoals March 1 in the Elite
Eight.

earned spots on the first-
place podium after their
wins at the Georgia High
School Association traditional
wrestling state tournament in
Macon Feb. 11.
Gavalas won gold in the
Class AAAAAA 195-weight
class and Marsh won gold in
the Class AAAA 170-weight
class. Marsh is the second
individual state champion from
St. Pius in program history and
the first in 25 years.
Marsh, who has a 48-3
record this season, defeated
Lafayettes Cole Ingram in
the gold medal match with a

Multi-million dollar sports facility coming to Stonecrest

If all goes as planned, the city of
Stonecrest will soon have a state-of-the-
art sports facility.
Discover DeKalb Convention and
Visitors Bureau, along with Atlanta
Sports Connection and Atlanta
Partners for Development announced
Feb. 22 a collaborative partnership to
build a $200 million sports facility
Atlanta Sports City at Stonecrest. The
facility will be a 190-acre entertainment
and recreational sports facility with the
ability to host corporate activities and
services.
Discover DeKalb Executive Director
James Tsismanakis said Atlanta Sports
City is going to be one of the biggest
economic development projects in
the area with nearly $80 million in
new demand for lodging, food and
entertainment.
Just 20 minutes east of downtown
Atlanta, the location of this project
is key, Tsismanakis said. This will be
a destination between Augusta and
Atlanta allowing us the opportunity
to compete for regional and national
sporting events.
The facility is expected to bring in
1,937 jobs and three million visitors
annually. Located on the southeastern
side of the Mall at Stonecrest, the
facility will accommodate more than 22
different sports and will host amateur
and professional sporting events
throughout the year.

indoor and outdoor sports facilities,

restaurants, retail shops, entertainment
venues, extreme sports areas, meeting
and event space, hotels and Stonecrest
Stadiuma 15,000-seat stadium
expected to be the home of two
professional sports teams; one mens
and one womens team.
First Team SC Sports CEO Trey
Brantley, who is also a member of
Sports DeKalb Board of Directors, said
the goal is to have a mens professional
team competing at the facility starting
in 2018.
And in 2019, it is our goal to bring
womens soccer back to our community
and bring Atlanta the franchise our city
so richly deserves, said Brantley.
Atlanta Sports City will also include
athletic training facilities, a field house
with indoor practice field, a covered
outdoor field, outdoor multi-use fields,
sports diamonds and indoor courts.
Greg Griffith, executive director
of Georgia Soccer Association and a
member of Sports DeKalb Board of
Directors, said the Georgia Soccer
Association is excited to have a
facility that matches the quality the
associations soccer clubs and teams.
This facility will provide a place for
dozens of local tournaments and give us
the ability to bid on major regional and
national tournaments to bring these
events to Atlanta, Griffith said. The
proximity to metro Atlanta and the
best airport in the country makes this a
great location for a sports complex.

Avondale Estates officials meet
with potential residents

After the Avondale
Estates Board of Mayor and
Commissioners voted to move
forward with its annexation
proposal, several board
members began meeting with
residents living in the proposed
annexation area.
Commissioner Brian
Fisher said he, the mayor
and some commissioners
have met with residents in
the Decatur Terrace, Forrest
Hills communities and other
communities to discuss the
proposal and hear concerns.
So far its gone pretty well
in the initial first steps and
there will be more [meetings]
to come, Fisher said. I do
think were handling it the
right way. Its all been very
encouraging so far. I wouldnt
say everyone is like, Yay,
annexation! but I do think it is
an important first step.
The city wants to annex
the Forest Hills and Decatur
Terrace neighborhoods,
commercial property along
E. Ponce de Leon Ave. and
Rio Circle, property along
Rockbridge Road and the
American Legion. In January,
a representative from the
University of Georgia
Carl Vinson Institute of
Government told the board
that the annexation is feasible.
Mayor Jonathan Elmore
said the tone he has heard from
residents is that they would like
to be kept in the loop of whats
going on regarding annexation.
I think at the very least we
do need to be better neighbors
and communicate better with
our neighbors because the
things we do does affect them,
Elmore said. U.S. 278 got
brought up a lot. Thats [their]
road too and what [we] do
there affects [them]. This [Sams
Crossing] apartment complex
is going to be adding lots of
people and thats going to affect

Regardless of what happens
