Lighting Schemes Design


Before Designing assume following things clearly.
Assumptions are required for illumination.
Assume Maintenance Factor = 0.8
Utilization Factor = 0.5 to 0.9
Assume illumination is free from glare
Assume illumination is free from dark shadows
Assuming lamps are arranged to give uniform illumination.
Space to height ratio along the length and breadth is less
than or equal to 1.5
Assume Height of mounting of Lamp ( as per area)

Example -1
A classroom measuring (20 m (L) X 15 m (b) X 5 m (h) is
to be illuminated.

a. State the design considerations for the lighting of above


class room
b. Calculate the no. of lamps required.
c. Draw the lighting layout.

Design considerations
An average illumination of 250 lux.
Maintenance factor 0.8
Utilization factor varies from 0.6 to 0.9
Assuming illumination is free from glare
Assuming illumination is free from dark shadows.

Reflective index of wall and ceiling is maximum.
Space to height ratio along the length and breadth is
less than or equal to 1.5
Selecting a fluorescent tube light
Selecting utilization factor of 0.86

For the lamp wattage of 36 with Lumen output = 3250

Distance along the length, a = 20/8 = 2.5m
Distance along the width, b = 15/ 4 = 3.75m
Side Length = a / 2 = 2.5 / 2 = 1.25m
Side Width = b/2 = 3.75 / 2 = 1.875m

An office room measuring (43 m (L) X 18 m (b) X
5 m (h) requires average illumination of 165 Lux.
Assume Coefficient of utilization =0.6 and
Depreciation Factor = 1.2

a. State the design considerations for above


lightening scheme
b. Calculate the no. of lamps required.
c. Draw the lighting layout with reference to
layout of centre.

Example-3
A drawing hall of 40 m 25 m 6 m is to be
illuminated with metal filament gas filled lamps to an
average illumination of 90 lm / m2, on a working plane
1 meter above the floor. Assume coefficient of
utilization of 0.5,depreciation factor of 1.2 and space
to height ratio of 1.2.

(Height 1) = 5m.

Example-4
A big hall of (30 m (L) X 12 m (b)) is to be
illuminated and illumination required is 50m candles.
Assuming a suitable data and calculated space height
ratio, a utilization factor of 0.5, depreciation factor of
1.3, Estimate the no. rating and disposition of lamps.
