Heliodoro (H.T.) Torres Snchez Jr.

Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District

Dr. H.T. Snchez accepted the position of Superintendent of Tucson Unified School District in July
2013. The district is the second-largest in Arizona and serves more than 48,000 students and their
families.

In his short time in the position, Dr. Snchez has led his team to create the districts first Five-Year
Strategic Plan, which won a Common Ground Award from Pima Metropolitan Alliance for excellence
in community collaboration. He has also led the creation of a comprehensive curriculum for all
schools, opened Infant & Early Learning Centers in formerly closed schools and instituted employee
friendly hiring and retirement policies.

Dr. Snchez is also leading sweeping improvements to the districts core systems, including the
conversion to a new Student Information System that will improve functions for educators,
administrators, families and students.

PREVIOUS PROFESSIONAL POSITIONS

Ector County (TX) Independent School District: Served in several positions, including
interim superintendent, deputy superintendent/chief of staff and assistant
superintendent for accountability and special populations. (2010-2013)
Adjunct Professor, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Spring 2006-2013. Classes taught
included Leading Effective Schools, Public School Law, Ethics and Philosophy at a doctoral level.
Executive Director, Instructional Support Services, Tyler (TX) Independent School District
(2009-2010). Directed and guided departments including Career and Technology,
Bilingual/ESL, Special Education, Intervention Services, Advanced Academics, and Secondary
Counseling, Prekindergarten Services and managed programs including Title III, Migrant
Education Services and more.
Director, Bilingual/ESL Services, Tyler lndependent School District (2008-2009): Audited
bilingual/ESL departments effectiveness based on student data outcomes and professional
development opportunities and hours engaged in such opportunities. Reviewed programs,
board policies and provided professional development for administrators in positions of
leadership.
