Working Process at BuitenSpeel BV
My mission as a designer at BuitenSpeel BV was to design and develop the companys
new packaging line. I was responsible for 100 products, which had to be packed in a new
attractive way. The new packaging have to be stronger, uniform, stable, high-qulaity and
more appealing to the target group. Some of the crucial steps, which I took during the
whole design process were researching, data analysis, idea generation, concept develop-
ment, materialization & visualization, measurement of all of the products, creating uniform
sizes, communication with suppliers, developing of all of the ar tworks, controlling the
production, planning and organization.

BuitenSpeel BV and their current
 Since 2016,
Since 2006 BuitenSpeel BV, enthusiasti-
cally produces games and toys for play-
ing outside. BuitenSpeel brand stands for
high quality, originality and a healthy dose
of outdoor fun. The products of BuitenSpeel
can be found in stores like House of Fraser
and sometimes they are exposed in Bijen-
korf, Alber t Heijn etc. Their collection of toys
can be seen also in Bol.com and Amazon.
com. The company is developing successfully
on the market for toys and the products are
spead internationally.

The assor tment of their products consist

of approximately 100 products and all
of them have a different format. Many
of the products are wooden and very
heavy. Their old packaging was made
mostly from corrugated cardboard and
have a simple rectangular shape. The
company was striving to change their
current packaging, mainly because it was
not strong enough, and it didnt show
a recognizable & uniform look of their
packaging products and their brand.

 Problem it is not stable

Statement
BuitenSpeel feels insecure about their
current packaging, because they find
it not enough appealing to the target
group. The company wants to change its
appearence, in order to make it look more
high-quality, simple and more attractive for
all ages. Besides they are looking for ways
to make the package uniform, stable and
stronger, so it can satisfy the retailers, cre-
ate better presence on the shelf and pro-
tect the products during transpor tation.

 RESEARCH
During the research phase, many stores for toys were observed. Some of the most impor tant things
when observing were the packaging of the toys, its ar twork, its material, the way of order in the
store, the way the consumers pereive the packaging. In order to learn more about consumers opin-
ion about packaging, their wishes and behaviour, interviews with the target group were conducted.

METHODS
The methods which I used to gather the most impor tant information were qualitative and
quantitative interviews-in-depth interviews with consumers and retailers, surveys, question-
naires, observations. Thanks to these methods, big amount of data related to packaging and
consumer behaviour in the stores was derived.

 IDEATION
During the ideation period many interesting ideas were generated. In the beginnig of the
process, exploration of different shapes and objects were made. At first, 4 good ideas were
selected and evaluated from the company, and this helped for the development of the final
idea.

 INSPIRATION
The observation at different types of boxes and different objects was really helpful
source of inspiration. Many collages and moodboards were created, and many new
ideas were derived from them.
