1. Title
OPERATION MANAGEMENT IN
TEXTILE INDUSTRY
2. Introduction
The Indian textile industry is one of the oldest industries in the country and displays a very

complex sectoral dispersal matrix with hand-spun and hand-woven sector on one end of the

spectrum and the capital-intensive sophisticated mill sector at the other, with the

decentralized powerloom and knitting sectors coming in between. Even in the organized

sector, island of excellence exist, using highly sophisticated information technology based

equipment with facilities for ERP/SAP which are second to none in the world.

The fibre specific configuration of the textile industry includes almost all types of textile

fibres from natural fibres like cotton, jute, silk and wool to synthetic/man-made fibres like

polyester, viscose, nylon, acrylic, polypropylene and the multiple blends of such fibres and

filament yarns.

3. Literature Review

The Indian textile industry has a significant presence in the Indian economy as well as in the
international textile economy. Its contribution to the Indian economy is manifested in terms
of its contribution to the industrial production, employment generation and foreign exchange
earnings.

The Textile Sector contributes:

About 4 percent to the gross domestic product;

About 14 percent of the total industrial output;
26 percent to the manufacturing sector;
21 percent of the work force ;
About 17 percent of the gross export earnings.

2. OBJECTIVES

Every task is undertaken with an objective. Without any objective a task is

rendered meaningless. The main objectives for undertaking this project are,

To analyse about operation management in textile industry.

To study about all the operational functions in textile industry.
To analyze the achievements, problems and challenges in

textile industry.

3. PROBLEM STATEMENT

I. Imposition of quota under Multi-fibre agreement

The first and the foremost reason for this gap was the imposition of
quota over the exports from low-cost manufacturing countries under
the Multi-fiber agreement (MFA). The quota had hindered the growth
of domestic RMG companies. Also, during the quota regime, Indias
export of RMG

I. Sourcing of Fabrics

There are certain problems that could be faced by Indian garment

manufacturers when sourcing for certain fabrics, so precautions should
be taken for it beforehand to minimize the problems. The Indian
garment exporters source cotton fabrics mainly from handloom
sectors, power looms and mills. Each of these sectors presents their
own unique set of problems to the garment exporters.
II. ISSUES IN QUALITY

Besides the quota imposition and problems related to sourcing of

fabic, there are various other reasons that have accounted for the huge
gap between the international demand and Indian supply. Another
reason for this gap can be attributed to the various quality factors or
issues in the exports of Indian RMG

4. METHODOLOGY

Research methodology A methodology can be defined as the

study of methods. Any study or research requires a proper
methodology for its success. Any systematic and scientific, and study
or research can give a clear picture of the film. The methodology plays
highly and significant role. It also considers the logic behind the
methods we use in the context of our research study and explain why
we are using a particular method or technique.

Samples a sample as the name implied is smaller representative of a larger

whole. Method of selecting a portion of the universe for the study is known a
sampling. Sampling or sample design refers to techniques or procedure the
researcher would adopt in selecting items for the sample from a given
population. An adequate sample is one which contains enough data to produce
reliable results.

Research instrument this research instrument includes questionnaire,

interview and schedule.

Questionnaire where it contains of a number of questions printed or

typed in a definite order on a form or set of forms.
Interviews this involves presentation of oral verbal stimuli and reply

in terms of oral verbal responses.

Schedules this method involves Performa containing a set of questions
which is filled by enumerators and the secondary data available in the
articles, reports CD-ROM, brag, internet and microfilm.

Tools for data collection:

Data is of two types they are:

Primary data
Secondary data

1. Primary data: this data is collected personally and interviewing and by

using structure questionnaire for the consumers and reliance fresh
employees, since this is the first hand information it provides valuable
and correct informations.(Sample size = 100)

2. Secondary data: Data were collected from documents, records,

Journals, Internet, text books and company past records etc.

Interpretation of data: interpretation refers to the task of drawing influences

from the collected facts after analytical and experimental study.

It involves two major aspects namely:

The effort to establish continuity in research through

linking the results of a given study with those of author.
The establishment of some explanatory concepts.
