Performance Task Students will be able to properly identify helpful and harmful
Annotation microorganisms and examples of each.
Subject Science
Approximate Duration of 3 class periods (45 mins each class).
Performance Task
Focus Standards S5L4. Students will relate how microorganisms benefit or harm larger
organisms.
a. Identify beneficial microorganisms and explain why they are
beneficial.
b. Identify harmful microorganisms and explain why they are harmful.
Complementary S5CS5. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities
Standards clearly.
a. Write instructions that others can follow in carrying out a
scientific procedure.
b. Make sketches to aid in explaining scientific procedures or
ideas.
c. Use numerical data in describing and comparing objects
and events.
d. Locate scientific information in reference books, back
issues of newspapers and magazines, CD-ROMs, and
computer databases.

S5CS6. Students will question scientific claims and arguments

effectively.
a. Support statements with facts found in books, articles, and
databases, and identify the sources used.
b. Identify when comparisons might not be fair because some
conditions are different.

National Standards
RI.5.7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources,
demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question
quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. (5-LS2-1)
SL.5.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual
displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the
development of main ideas or themes. (5-LS2-1)
Description and Teacher *Prior to coming to the science lab students will have basic knowledge about
Directions microorganisms from science teacher.
1. Introduce the assignment by showing the students a Voki describing the
problem they are to solve.
2. Show the students the online directions and rubric that is on Mrs. Gilberts
Sharepoint Website. Go over each part of the directions and rubric. Answer
any questions. Pass out the research graphic organizer.
3. To begin the students will play the MI High Microorganism matching
game. This will help refresh their brain of the difference between helpful and
harmful microorganisms.
4. Once students complete the game they may begin researching examples of
helpful and harmful microorganisms to fill out their graphic organizer.
Students are instructed to find 3-5 of each. Links for suggested websites are
on Mrs. Gilberts Sharepoint page.
5. After the student has found 3-5 helpful and harmful microorganisms they
are to have their graphic organizer checked by Mrs. Gilbert. Once approved
they will begin to create two Vokis.
6. Each student will create two Vokis (voki.com). One describing the harmful
microorganisms they found during their research and another to describe the
helpful microorganisms they found.
7. Once every student has completed their webquest and Vokis they may
present them to the class (optional).
Title of Rubric Microorganism Webquest Rubric
Rubric Description This is a formative rubric that will act as a guide for the students while they
complete their assignment. The teacher will use the rubric to provide a
science grade and constructive critique.

The setting of this lesson will take place in the science/math lab and conducted by the Title I
science/math lab teacher Mrs. Gilbert. The science/math lab consists of 29 desktop computers,
internet connection, and a Promethean Board. The school is a Title I school in rural Cherokee
County, Ga. The promethean board will be used to show the directions, rubric, and examples for
the students. Each student will use a desktop computer. Each student will participate individually
and turn in their own work.
The students participating in the lesson are current 5th grade students. The lesson will be repeated
on two different days to accommodate both 5th grade classrooms. The students vary in age from
10-12, consist of both male and female students, average, gifted, and SPED, as well as
socially/economically disadvantaged. The majority of the student population is white with a low
population of mixed race and Hispanic. All students are English speaking.
MICROORGANISM WEBQUEST DIRECTIONS
Your task is to identify types of harmful and helpful
microorganisms as well as present examples. This is an individual
research project.
Directions:
1. Using the websites provided on Mrs. Gilberts website you
will search for 3-5 harmful and helpful microorganisms (3-5
of each).
2. You will complete your graphic organizer as you find your
information.
3. Once research is complete you will create two Vokis
presenting your findings. (One for harmful and one for
helpful). Directions on how to create are posted on Mrs.
Gilberts website.
4. You have the option to present to the class if you like once
your project is complete.
REMINDERS: Look at the rubric OFTEN! This will help you achieve
the best grade possible.
