Funeral details
for crash victims
A FUNERAL was held on
Friday to celebrate the life
of Servando Tuazon, a
victim of the crash on
January 18 which left two
people dead.
A crowd funding
campaign had been started
to allow his family to take
his body to the Philippines
where he was born, but an
update to the page
explained Mr Tuazon
would be buried in Alice
Springs instead.
Meanwhile details have
been released about a
memorial service for
Marcia Hremeviuc. A
service will be held
tomorrow at the Seventh
Day Adventist Church in
Braitling.
The church is located at
59 Dixon Road, and the
service will begin at 2pm.
Ms Hremeviucs
partner, John Morris, was
also badly injured in the
crash. Its understood hes
in a stable condition in
intensive care, and has
family supporting him.

flying legacy behind

ONE of the victims of the
crash which claimed two lives
earlier this month was Alice
Springs and Australian avi-
ation pioneer Marcia Hreme-
viuc.
The first NT road fatality of
the year, on January 18, also
claimed the life of 17-year-old
Servando Tuazon, who was
about to start year 12.
Ms Hremeviuc, 66, was
travelling with partner John
Morris, 73, who was seriously
injured. Both worked for the
Department of Infrastructure
and were on their way to Simp-
sons Gap to check the road
conditions following the
rains, as part of Mr
Morris role as an en-
gineer.
Ms Hremeviuc ar-
rived in Alice Springs in
the late 1980s with a
commercial pilots li-
cense and then went on
to work for Central Aus-
tralian Helicopters. By
1988, she was chief pilot
for the company, a strik-
ing achievement in the
male-dominated indus-
try.
In 1985, Ms Hremeviuc
became the first woman in
Australia to gain her heli-
copter instructor rating.
This achievement was
made possible when she
was awarded the Lady
Casey scholarship by the Aus-
tralian Women Pilots Associ-
ation, the financial assistance

In a March 1985 edition of
the Courier Mail, Ms Hremevi-
ucs instructor Helicopters
Brisbane chief pilot Mr Geoff
Eberhard described her as
one of the best students he had
in the course.
Ms Hremeviuc was modest
in response to this praise; de-
scribed time and again as hum-
ble and unassuming. Its not
excessively hard, Ms Hreme-
viuc said at the time. Its just
that Im interested in it.
During the flash flooding of
Alice Springs in 1988, where
the Todd River broke its banks
and water was knee deep in
Todd Mall, Ms Hremeviuc was
the helicopter pilot in a drama-
tic rescue attempt.
A policeman was winched
down from the helicopter to
people trapped on a sandbar by
the rising waters.
From accounts of the effort,
Ms Hremeviuc skilfully man-
oeuvred the aircraft, avoiding
trees and powerlines, and
pushed the machine to its lim-
its. In 2012, Ms Hremeviucs
tireless work was honoured
with a 10,000-hour flight time
badge.
As well as an accomplished
helicopter pilot and instructor,
she also flew fixed-wing air-
crafts, including vintage and
ultralights, on which she also
instructed. Ms Hremeviuc was
also listed by the NT Govern-
ment as a woman of note in the
Territorys social and cultural
history.
