JOB HOPPING

The idea of job hopping usually is frowned upon experts say that there can be an upside
to this often frowned upon trend.

For an aspirant, it can be quite a task to explain why he/she has jumped jobs frequently.
Though reasons may be professional or personal, experts say that the best way is to be
forthright with your future employer. As long as employees job changes can be justified,
employers will not look at it negatively.

Typically young aspirants tend to have a high turnover ratio in the few months or years
they would have worked, against a person with significant work experience. There can be
many reasons for this: higher studies, confusion in their minds about whats best for
them as a career, or out of sheer frustration emanating from their need for quick
success.

While the idea of job hopping is frowned upon in the industry, experts say that there can
be certain advantages too. And with young people rising fast in India Inc., many
organizations say that they prefer hiring aspirants who have a range of experience under
their belt. A fresh look at the existing way of doing things is certainly the most important
quality such employees bring to an organization. New ideas will be generated and there
is a possibility that employees who are in the system for long are professionally
challenged. Candidates with relevant experience in the industry can certainly boost
innovation in the organization.

These aspirants are likely to enjoy being continuously challenged with newer
assignments which stretches their imagination and potential. In job profiles that require
these characteristics in differing degrees, they would be good fits and could turn out to
be high performers. They also bring in a heterogeneous experience working in different
environments or jobs, which can be handy for jobs that involve multi-tasking. However,
every story has two sides and experts say that though job hopping can be an advantage
sometimes, there might be some explaining to do. There might be a possibility where the
candidate lacks in depth experience or knowledge on a particular practice or subject.
Also, in such instances, he/she might be seen as person who is more of an individual
player rather than a good corporate citizen.

While most experts contend that job hopping is not necessarily bad, they throw a caveat
that it is important to establish the real reason for it. And finally, candidates need to
make sure that they can show a good performance record. In the end all an organization
needs is determination and the will to succeed.

If you are wondering how an aspirant can make the best out of a situation like this and
succeed in an organization, experts show the way:

1. Aspirants should try to select job roles or responsibilities which fit into their natural
disposition, at the age they are in, to be self motivated, and to be able to build a career
in one organization.
2. He/she must be in a position to convince the new employer that job change is more for
professional growth or for compelling personal reasons and certainly not only for a pay
hike.
3. It is very important for an employee to show sincerity and intent for a long term
relationship with the organization he/she aspires to work with. The candidate should at
least be clear about the commitment on the time frame required if asked by the
organization. He/she should present details on actual projects which are slightly long
term that he/she has completed in earlier stints.

WORKING STYLE

A persons working style: Everyone has his own strategy for work. Some people are not
happy unless theyre independent. They have great difficulty working closely with other
people and cant work well under a great deal of supervision. They have to run their own
show. Others function best as part of a group. We call their strategy cooperative one.
They want to share responsibility for any task they take on. Still have a proximity
strategy, which is somewhere in between. They prefer to work with other people while
maintaining sole responsibility for a task. They are in charge but not alone.
If you want to get the most out of your employees, or your children, or those supervise,
figure out their work strategies, the ways in which theyre most effective. Sometimes
youll find an employee who is brilliant but a pain in the neck. He always has to do things
his way. Now he just might not be cut to be an employee. He may be the kind of person
who has to run his own business, and sooner or later he probably will if you do not
provide an avenue of expression. If you have a valuable employee like this, you should
try to find a way to maximize his / her talents and give him / her as much autonomy as
possible. If you make him a part of a team, hell drive everyone crazy. But if you give him
as much independence as possible, he can prove invaluable. That is what the new
concepts of entrepreneurship are all about.

Youve heard of the Peter Principle, the idea that all people are promoted to the level of
their incompetence. One reason this happens is that employers are often insensitive to
their employees work strategies. There are people who work best in a cooperative
setting. They thrive on a large amount of feedback and human interaction. Would you
reward their good work by putting them in charge of some new autonomous venture?
Not if you want to make use of their best talents. That doesnt mean you have to keep a
person at the same level. But it does mean you should give promotions and new work
experiences that utilizes a persons best talents, not his worst ones.

Likewise, many people with proximity strategies want to be part of a team but need to do
their own work alone. In any structure there are jobs that nurture all three strategies.
They key is to have the acuity to know how people work best and then find a task they
thrive in.

Heres an exercise to do today. After reading this article, practice eliciting peoples
metaprograms. Ask them: What do you want in a relationship (or house or car or career)?
How do you know when you have been successful at something? What is the relationship
between what you are doing this month and what you did last month? How often does
someone have to demonstrate something to you before you are convinced its true? Tell
me about a favorite work experience and why it was important to you.

Does the person pay attention to you while you are asking these questions? Is he
interested in your response, or is he occupied elsewhere? These are only a few of the
questions you can ask to successfully elicit. If you dont get the information you need,
rephrase the question until you do.

Think of almost any communication problem you have, and youll probably find that
understanding the person will help you adjust communication so that the problem
disappears. Think of a frustration in your life someone you love who doesnt feel loved,
someone you work for who manages to rub the wrong way, or someone youve tried to
help who hasnt responded. What you need to do is identify the operating metaprogram,
identify what you are doing, and identify what the other person is doing. For example,
suppose you need verification only once that you have a loving relationship, and your
partner needs it consistently. Or you put together a proposal that shows how things are
alike, and your supervisor only wants to hear about the ways theyre different. Or you try
to warm someone about something he needs to avoid, and hes only interested in
hearing about something he wants to go after.
