2. Significance of Green Feed in Livestock
FRESH GREEN FEED is the natural food for all ruminant animals. Grasses are also good source of
protein. Fodder crops provide all the critical elements like highly digestible protein, carbohydrates,
fats and minerals. Green fodders are very good source of -carotene (precursor of vitamin A). This
vitamin is necessary to maintain the health and reproduction in livestock.
However, due to climatic conditions, succulent grass is only available for a short period in a year and
is not available in many arid and semi-arid regions of the country. The shortage of green feed & its
low quality are the main cause of low reproduction and production in animal. Thus, if hydroponics
green feed is made available to livestock, it will not only address the concern of low availability but
also help in improving livestock health.
We refer hydroponically produced green fodder as feed because Protein content is about three
times higher and Energy values are almost double in Hydroponics feed. The conventionally
harvested green feed consists only of cut grass, but the Hydroponics feed consists of grass, along
with grains and roots. This method of producing green feed has many advantages for the farmers,
the ecology and the environment.

3. Current scenario
More than 2,445 million people economically active in agriculture in the world, probably 2/3 or even
more 3/4 of them are wholly or partly dependent on livestock farming. Arable land is majorly used
for growing crops of human consumption rather than crops for livestock. Thus, pasture land and
grasses are shrinking day by day.

Indian Scenario
India is endowed with rich flora & fauna and continues to be vital avenue for employment and income
generation, especially in rural areas. The dairy sector in the India has shown remarkable development
in the past decade and India has now become one of the largest producers of milk and value-added
milk products in the world. India is largest producer of milk in the world.
Milk production in India is growing at 4% per year, and at present India contributes 15% of the
total global milk production. Due to ever increasing population pressure of human, arable land is
mainly used for food and cash crops, thus there is little chance of having good quality arable land
available for fodder production. According to a report of the working group on animal husbandry and
dairying for five-year plan (2002-2007, Govt. of India, Planning Commission, August 2001) there will
be huge demand of green fodder and dry by 2025.

4. Ayurvet's Solution: Ayurvet ProGreen Hydroponics Green Feed Producing Machine
4.1. Hydroponics Background
The word hydroponics been derived from the Greek word water working, is directed to growing
plants without soil (Hydro means water and Ponic means working). Hydroponics is the science of
soilless growing of plants in nutrient rich solutions. It is a technique where the physiological
requirements of plants can be met without use of soil and natural sunlight.
In conventional system, seed start germinating when it gets favorable conditions (like: Water, Air,
Temperature and Light) maximum energy is utilized by the seed in search of nutrient by developing
radicle (roots), very less amount of energy is utilized for the growth of the plumule (shoot).
In hydroponics, favorable conditions are provided to the seed and food is directly supplied to the
plumule, so the maximum energy is utilized in the growth of the plumule rather than in
developing radicle in search of nutrient.
Hydroponics techniques have proven itself to be very useful and efficient for producing food for
livestock. The advantages of hydroponics agriculture include control over plant nutrition and therefore
increased production, stable harvests of high quality fresh feeds which is available all the year and can
be produced on an industrial scale; the food that is available is free from undesirable materials such as
weeds, insects, dust, insecticides, germicides, carcinogens and radioactive substances.
Hydroponics culture is probably the most intensive method of crop production in today's
agricultural industry. With the possibility of adjusting air and root temperature, light, water, plant
nutrition and adverse climate, hydroponics agriculture can be made highly productive, conservative
of water and land and protective of the environment.

4.2. Hydroponics Machine

With Ayurvet's ProGreen, uncontaminated, consistent &
succulent green feed is available 365 days of the year regardless
of location or weather.
In Ayurvet's Hydroponics machine*, green feeds are grown in
controlled environmental conditions with a temperature range
o
of 15-32 C and a relative humidity of 80-85%. Green feed is
grown in multilayer shelves. Natural light is let in through
suitably glazed windows.
Ayurvet's Hydroponics machine has
successfully grown nutritious green feed for Maize, Barley and Oats. It
has also successfully produced Wheat and Paddy nursery in the system.
Bio conversion ratio was found to be 6-8 times.
Specially prepared nutrient solution NUTROSOL and herbal solution
HERBOSOL are used for the growth of plants and seed treatment
respectively.
*Applied for Patent.

sufficient growing space.
Reduction in growth time: The growing time of hydroponics plants takes as little as 7 days from seed
germination to a fully-grown plant at a height of 25- 30 cm, ready for harvest. Also, the biomass
conversion ratio is as high as 6-8 times under optimum conditions.
Reduced labour requirement: This process of growing cattle feed requires minimal man- hour ratio
per day. It is as little as 2 to 3 hours per day, needed to maintain & produce hydroponics Green Feed, as
compared to the many hours of intense labour required for growing the same amount of feed as a
pasture crop.
Constant feed supply: Hydroponics technology will remove the need for long- term storage of feeds.
With our hydroponics machine, a consistent supply of Green Feed is guaranteed 365 days of the year.
Enhancement of Nutritional value: Hydroponic Green Feed is a highly effective particularly nutritious
feed, which produces 3 times more protein as compared to conventional Green Feed. It has high
energy content, Vitamin A & E content and very high moisture content. Feeding livestock
hydroponically produced feed may increase the milk production and improve upon the general health
& fertility.
Completely natural: An important factor about growing green feed in Ayurvet's hydroponics machine
is that it is completely natural product. Therefore, there are no pesticides or fungicides used that could
alternatively contaminate the milk or meat that are being produced.
Provide more acreage for food crop production thus improving the economy & sustainability of
land. This system also eliminates additional pressure on an already over worked irrigation system.

6. Ayurvet ProGreen Hydroponics Machine: Benefits in Agriculture

Along with standardizing hydroponics for growing green feed, studies were also planned and
executed for growing crops for human consumption. Hydroponics paddy and wheat seedlings were
successfully grown and transplanted to soil.
This technology exemplifies the potential of Science & Technology for increasing food production
and improving food & nutrition security. Therefore it is a search for ways to perfect the technology of
growing hydroponics crops in the direction of increasing the yield and decreasing resource
consumption.
6.1. Value Addition in Paddy Cultivation
Background: Paddy cultivation is a water intensive operation. In the event of declining ground water
level and unpredictable rainfall pattern many states are forced to issue advisories to the farmers to
abstain from paddy cultivation. This not only affects their food security but also their economic
status. Looking into the above we have to search newer ways with intervention of technology for
paddy production to support the farming needs of the country.

6.2. Value Addition in Cultivation of Wheat Grass

Background: Wheatgrass is highly rich in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, protein and chlorophyll. It
contains almost every amino acid, vitamin and mineral necessary for human nutrition that makes it a
complete food for us. The high chlorophyll content make it acts as a magnet in drawing out toxins from
the body. The three most important effects of wheatgrass on the human body are: blood purification,
liver detoxification and colon cleansing.
In Ayurvet ProGreen Hydroponics wheat grass was grown in just 7 days time whereas in field
conditions it took 20- 25 days, which means saving of about 15 days and extra wheat grass.
Thus, Wheat grass can be grown inside the machine consistently throughout the year for commercial
use. This in future could be an opportunity to save land which is currently under cultivation of wheat
grass. In addition this would also help in improving human health cost effectively.
