Woman killed in
two-vehicle crash
Saturday
A 36-year-old Lanett,
Ala., woman was killed
Saturday in a two-vehicle
crash in Chambers Coun-
ty, Ala.
According to a report
from the Alabama Law
Enforcement Agency,
Shelia Heard was killed
when the 2005 Chevrolet
Cobalt she was driving
collided with a 2015 Nis-
san Altima.
She was pronounced
dead at the scene.
The crash occurred at
10:15 p.m. near the 5200
block of Chambers County
289, approximately 10
miles north of Lanett.
Alabama state troopers
are still investigating.

U.S. Senate debate

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Challengers to Repub-
lican U.S. Sen. Johnny
Isakson again Friday in-
directly questioned wheth-
er the incumbent should be
running for a third term
after he announced last
year that he had been
diagnosed with Parkin-
sons.
That diagnosis, along
with past criticism of Isak-
sons former realty firm,
highlighted a number of
testy exchanges as Demo-
crat Jim Barksdale and
Libertarian Allen Buckley
went on the offensive
against an incumbent who
holds a firm lead in the
race.
The debate Friday was
the only one before the
Nov. 8 election, and both
Barksdale and Buckley
have a lot of ground to
make up. A new Atlanta
Journal-Constitution poll
released Friday showed
Isakson maintaining a
commanding lead in the
race.
Staffers for both chal-
lengers said going into the
debate that they would not
bring up the issue of Isak-
sons fitness. The issue
blew up earlier this week
when the Atlanta Press
Club, which hosted the

Justin Marquez Dallas is a
suspect in the shooting.
Warrants were issued
for Dallas on charges of
aggravated assault and
possession of a firearm
during a crime.

During Fridays taping, all
the candidates stood at
podiums.
But as the debate turned
to a question about term
limits, both challengers
made what seemed like
veiled references to Isak-
sons diagnosis. That came he could easily serve out
after Isakson rejected the
idea of term limits, saying
the ultimate term limits
were in the hands of vot-
ers. Buckley followed by
saying both U.S. House
and Senate members
should be limited to 12
years but then went on to
say that whether or not
term limits ever became
law, he wasnt sure Isakson
would be running for re-
election if he wins next
month.
It was an awkward segue
and Isakson jumped on it,
launching into talking
points he has repeated
often on the campaign trail
about his pride in being
open about his diagnosis
and the encouragement he
has received from his con-
stituents.
I wish you well on your
health; it wasnt meant that
criminal justice system.
Many civil rights activ-
ists also believe theres a
school to prison pipeline
that has funneled black
youths into prison for
profit through zero toler-
ance disciplinary policies
and police in schools.
J. Aleem Hud is director
of Project Rebound, a
youth empowerment pro-
gram, where Thomas goes
for support and mentor-
ing. Hud said he remem-
bers when the Columbus
black community still had
strong institutions such as
family, church and benev-
olent societies to help
usher boys into manhood.
But changes in society
over the past 50 years
such as the decimation of
the close-knit black com-
munity, the loss of indust-
rial jobs in many neigh-
borhoods and drug laws
that disproportionately
affect the black communi-
ty have left many black
young men displaced and
on the fringes of society.
Through incarceration,
through law enforcement,
we see whats going on
today with the Black Lives
Matter movement, he
said. With men being
taken out of the family,
that means that boys
would begin to be raised

teen shot in
stomach
A 14-year-old is in the
hospital after being shot
Saturday evening in south-
west Atlanta, police say.
Atlanta Police Sgt. War-
ren Pickard said the teen
was standing near Bishop
Bros. Auto Auction, on
Metropolitan Parkway
near Avery Road around 5
p.m. Saturday when some-
one opened fire, hitting
him in the stomach. He
was taken to Grady Hospi-
tal, where he was listed in
stable condition.
Pickard said police were
searching for the suspect,
who fled after the shoot-
ing.
No further information
was available about a
motive for the shooting or
whether the teen was a
target.

Isakson, he should serve
the full six years.
When Isakson an-
nounced his diagnosis in
June 2015, his doctor said
another full term, a point
he reiterated in an in-
terview with the AJC earli-
er this month.
Barksdale also tried to
tie Isakson to Republican
presidential nominee Don-
ald Trump, using an issue
that various opponents of
the incumbent have raised
over his long political ca-
reer: a long-ago racial
discrimination lawsuit
involving Isaksons father.
Senator Isakson contin-
ues to support Donald
Trump frankly because you
have much more in com-
mon than you want us to
believe, said Barksdale,
launching into an attack
that seemed to try to draw
a parallel with allegations
against Trump related to a
1973 lawsuit brought by the
U.S. Justice Department
against Trumps company.

great extent. So that
means the moral fabric
that held us together for
many years was lost, and
our young men are grow-
ing up in a crime culture.
Thomas went to prison
for voluntary man-
slaughter and not a drug
crime, but it was his ca-
reer path and environment
he was a crack dealer in
a crime-infested neigh-
borhood that guided
him toward tragic circum-
stances. He was only 22
when he went to prison for
21 years.
To be sure, there are
many young black males
who transition well into
American society and go
on to live productive lives.
But for some, such as
Thomas, the path can be a
meandering maze of trial
and error, many times
with devastating results.
The destination for far too
many is a life of crime and
incarceration.
That raises a lot of ques-
tions that I hope well
ponder this week.
