Mestizo River was central to Vigan's development in the 16th-19th centuries: large

vessels could berth in the delta and small craft communicated with the interior.

However, it is now no longer navigable owing to silting, as a result of which the town is

no longer an island and lost its maritime trade. The rivers waterways were open to

small ships. It was also used as harbor by larger ships. The Vigan River Cruise is a

result of the cultural Mapping Project and the Vigan Master Tourism Plan. It is another

measure to reinforce the Vigan Heritage Conservation Program using the Mestizo River

to tell the historical timeline of Vigan from pre-history to the present time. The cruise

shall focus on the natural state of the Mestizo by showcasing its natural

environment/vegetation and biodiversity system. This river traversing the eastern

portion of the Poblacion played an important role in the development of trade and

human activities in Vigan during the 15th to the 19th centuries. Through the ONE

HOUR river trip, one gets a feel of this era. This study entitled the Cruising Mestizo

River, A Historical Adventure, will aim to answer the following questions: 1. What is

the historical background of Mestizo River in terms of the following: a. History and

origin, b. geographical location and features? 2. What is the Socio-Economic Role of

the Mestizo River? 3. What are the developments of Mestizo River in terms of the

following: a. programs and development of Mestizo River, b. promotional strategies?

In this study, the data were gathered from the Barangay Chairman and the

residents of the place and its vicinity, the chosen City Officials, the Tourism Officer,

City Agriculturist, Vigan City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City

Planning Development Coordinator, Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office

of the Mestizo River. 1.) This study yielded in the following implications: That the word

of flood control on the river to prevent from soil erosion. 3.) The City of Vigan and

residents along the River should maintain the cleanliness of the river. 4.) The City of

Vigan should give the resident a livelihood through the help of river. 5.) The City of

Vigan should remove all of those water lilys more often. 6.) The residents along the

river should not use a bukatot for fishing 7.) The resident needs a unity for the cleaning
