BRIEF SITE ANALYSIS - CHARACTERISTICS OF PLACE

To produce a concept that requires a considered amount

of understanding to its site and context. This is known as a
Sitooterie which is a Scottish colloquial term meaning a place
to sit out in.

Within this project there needed to be a clear connection to

place and how you were to intervene forming a dialogue 1:200
between context and intervention. Therefore by enriching the
users experience within the surrounding area.

CONCEPT SKETCHES DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL DESIGN STATEMENT
The design originated from the designated area to
simply evenly spread the seating around Kingsmead
Square. Combining its location and aligned position
with the two existing trees it felt most fitting and
appropriate to have a similar organic representation.
(This can be seen on the site analysis)

After various design attempts and no real purposeful

form, a step back was taken to the Site analysis of
Public Vs Private and this formed the divide between
levels. Open base (public) and enclosed top (private).
The central trees leafage will partly enclose the top
and give a feel of being within the tree will be present.

This simple two storey Sitooterie could be perceived as

bulky, therefore the walls are made of evenly spaced
timber cladding strips and are attached to a frame. This
also allows the private space to be clear when in use
due to the gaps, because if it were completely enclosed
this could put off the public to come and explore the
space. Essentially stripping down the cladding basically
leaves a raised floor and supports which can withhold
stairs.

BACK ELEVATION 1:50 Timber frame construction the Floor will be in a

circular form and will be joined in segments, there will
be floor joists crossing through the rounded floor and
this floor will be raised by slotting into timber posts.
The posts will also have a thin steel rail in a circular
formation attached above and below the floor plate.
These rings are there to support the cladding which will
be bolted together.

As this area of the square is least used the design

is to encourage people to freely use this space as
seating around the square is fully used at lunch time.
The inner wall structurally holding the stairs is the
only solid component and the outer wall for the stair
case is glass. Too much opaque material will begin to
overpower the view of the existing Georgian buildings.

The concept of the organic interpretation also was

encouraged by looking at Baths architecture, a lot of
major buildings have the power to overlook and stand
prominent amongst their surroundings. This is what the
design intends to achieve. To deepen into the city of

P3 FROME, SOMERSET - SITE ANALYSIS

WORK TITLES
BRIEF

Before a design project there is an important need to

gather contextual analysis of the site AND the area
(town). Understanding the place and people can
really influence architectural form and function of a
design, along with geographical contours, history,
politics, landscape and views, materiality, shops and
food, and opportunities or issues.

Therefore analysis took place in 12 groups to study

these factors as there would be too much ground to
cover as an individual in a tight two week period, my
groupdtook analysis of noise, accoustics and sounds.

How to undertake Site/contextual analysis:

Desktop research and understanding what

process/ equipment would be needed.

CONCLUSION
From our studies we have been able to draw
some clear conclusions. It is quite obvious that
the
dominant sound present in Frome is traffic. When
outside, no matter where you are in the town the
sound of the traffic is present. However, in various
parts of the town, such as in Victoria Park or the
Recreation Ground, the sound of the traffic is
less obvious and more peaceful sounds of nature
can be heard. Although the town feels quaint,
traditional and peaceful, modern day noises such
as cars and construction are dominant.

The accommodation needs to provide for

PRECEDENTS MATERIALITY CONCEPTS/ IDEAS

I believe alongside case studies, simply gathering a collection of varied secondary images of elements to a building that
you are interested in helps give a quick idea how existing space or design has been formed and used. These images
were to get an idea of retirement apartments and the way they use external spaces, are they communal and peaceful or
do they simply divide the surrounding roads from the building (gardens).

HOUSE IN THE NETHERLANDS by ARJEN REAS

A mixture of contemporary and classic architecture which incorporates

traditional Dutch with modernism. This cubistic layout is fit for a relaxing home
with views from every angle, the purpose of this design is to have light puncture
through all over the house.

What drawn my attention to this house was the simplistic form, my concepts
were of a basic 2 floor build with an exposed gabled roof, and this allowed me
to see how to turn my idea of rather bland traditional ideas into a contemporary
mix.

P5 ENTERPRISE LAB
BRIEF

In the small town of Frome there is an under-supply of small to medium office spaces for
the current growing businesses, which therefore tend to to move afar to Bath or Bristol
for bigger space. Therefore the task was to supply spaces for Startups, Entreprenuers,
Freelancers and small Businesses with an an Enterprise Laborartory.

Requirements:

Provide between 50 - 100 workspaces

Ensure flexibility in growth and function

Room for a company to expand to a maximum of 20 workspaces

Remember some businesses will only require one workspace

.....

The building should provide shared facilities for all worksers such as:

Reception area

Private meeting rooms (one at least to accommodate 15 workers max)

Toilets

Cafe for staff and public

Public space for Exhibitions/ presentations (maxiumum seated of 60)

The form and function to this building should encourage co-working, collaboration and
interaction between each company and employees. To help prodcutive working the
spaces should offer a light, airy, open and visually attractive environment. There also
needs to be a secondary use incorporated within the building which ourselves as the
designer needs to choose. The function could all be dependant on the four given sites
provided around the town of Frome. Which then ourselves needed to pick one site to
work with.

When visiting each site and the town itself it is very clear it already offers
plenty of clothing shops, food such as cafes and resturants, estate agents and
so forth but when looking at the map of Frome and where all these facilities
where located it was clear Frome has very little to offer wthin the sport and
exercise sector. Apart from one womens gym and then a leisure centre way
out of the town.

To dermine which site would be most suited quick plans where made to
