Outline:
There are 57 breweries in Sheffield and this number begins to grow. In our 5
minute documentary we wanted to show a variety of different breweries, to give
the best idea of Sheffields history and its present.
The film will be introduced with a drone shot with a voice over by our presenter
Harry. This will introduce the question of the documentary and the history of
brewing in Sheffield. Before it cuts to Harry and Jim brewing themselves. This
gives a clear idea of the popularity of brewing in Sheffield not just for companies
but also home brewing.
To introduce how far back the history of brewing goes in Sheffield we wanted to
find one of the oldest breweries in Sheffield. Our research found that the Fat Cat
is one of the oldest pubs in Sheffield, set up in 1850 under the name The Alma.
It was renamed the Fat Cat when it was sold in 1981. It was then sold again in
1989. In 1990 the Kelham Island brewery was build in the beer garden of the pub.
We chose this as a key part of our documentary as it will allow us to compare the
reasons for setting up in Sheffield.
Our next stop in the documentary would be Brew Mart. A small store which sells
supplies to home brewers, including Jim and Harry, since 1981. We chose to
include this as it backs up the idea of the popularity of home brewing and would
allow us to find out if there has been a change in the popularity home brewing.
The Brothers Arms is also a well known pub in Sheffield. Though it is more of a
locals pub, we wanted to get an in site into how people affect the popularity of
Real Ale and if there are new customers into these beers, as well as customers
who keep drinking real ale. This would be investigated by interviewing the
owners as well as customers, asking questions such as Do you remember you
first beer? and any other stories that we can link to real ale.
To look at modern brewing we chose to interview the new brewery, the Sentinel.
This will give us a comparison in the brewing style of Kelham Island and the
Sentinel. We can also compare the reasons for brewing in Sheffield as well as
their opinion on the popularity of Real Ale in Sheffield.
Finally we will have an interview with the Sheffield branch of BrewDog. Though
this is a large brand that does not have a brewery in Sheffield, we wanted to find
why they chose to build one of their pubs in Sheffield. This gives us an idea of the
wider world of brewing and the popularity of their beer in other areas of the UK.
When we are visiting each location we will be investigating the opinion that
Sheffield as the brewing capital of England.
The film will aim to find the technical aspects of brewing and the brewing
heritage. The documentary will be formal, using Harry as a presenter. In the
camera work we will use a warm colour scheme with shallow and pull focus
during filler shots that can play over the top of interviews.
