The Problem

Health Visitors find it very difficult to As your child grows older it doesn’t see
keep up with what is available in their the Health Visitor as often.
area. They get told lots of information but
keeping it up-to-date is a problem. So as well as a tool in which the Health
Visitors can use to let parents know what
Health Visitor Alison says, groups are on, an access point for the
parents when they want to find out
“I know that as a Health Visitor it is themselves needs to be available.
sometimes difficult to keep up with what
is available in your area. For example
one of the local mother and baby toddler
groups has closed on a Fri and is only
open Mon and Wed. I only found out
because one of the mum’s who goes told
me when it came up in conversation. I
could easily have sent someone there
on the Friday and they would have been
cross or more importantly it could have
put them off going to groups.”

Health Visitors have a huge list of

responsibilities, so I need to ensure that
my design solution doesn’t overload
them. Although I do think that using the
Health Visitors along aside something
else would be useful.

Parents rely on Health Visitors as a

source of valuable information and are
often asked about groups which they can
attend. As Alison said, she finds it dif-
ficult to know what is currently on.
Out of Date Information.

At present there is a list of groups printed

out and given to every parent who then
clip it into their baby handbook which is
given to every new born baby.

(Opposite):
The list of Parent and Toddler Groups
in the Rosyth Area has a mistake. ‘Little
Cherubs’ no longer runs on a Friday. A No longer on a Friday,
Mum could easily go along only to find
it’s not on, causing unnecessary distress.

Current attempts to keep information

up-to-date include, “an admin person
will try and ring the contact person for
the specific group and update the list of
groups the Health Centre holds. Often
the contact person no longer goes to the
group, so perhaps a Health Visitor has to
drop in.”
Health Visitors.

1 in 6 Health Visitors are over the retiring

age of 55.

More Health Visitors are working over

the age of 65 then under the age of 25.

Although all Health Visitors have to be

able to use computers their level of
competency varies.

“I am thought to be the best in the office.

When I really have basic knowledge of
computing.”

I need to keep in mind that Health

Visitors are not good with technology.
My service outcome needs to be as
simple as possible for it to work
efficiently.
Current sites.

New mum Leigh-Anne told me, Is mumsnet.com - the place to be? Is it

just that Health Visitors need to use it?
“I am on mumnet [a website for
mothers to get information and network.] Personally I found mumsnet extremely
but its rubbish in my opinion. All the confusing. Once registered, I needed to

If Leigh-Anne hadn’t had a car

driving all the way to Edinburgh for a
group wouldn’t have been possible. She
would then feel extremely isolated and
alone in Rosyth.

Another mother Julie said that she is a

member of mumsnet.com, but she doesn’t
get a huge amount from it - “they seem
to be getting a little political and I don’t
agree with a lot of the comments on the
forum so I don’t get much information
from them (except recipes!)”
The Benefits of joining a group

Group are often advertised as, “If you’re

getting bored at home or finding it
difficult to keep your toddler entertained
and stimulated, a playgroup is a good
setting for you and your toddler to
socialise.”

The baby and toddler years are often the

best opportunity for parents to spend
fun, quality time with their children. For
many, the longest stretches of time they
will ever get to spend with their children
are during the early years.

For some, this means maternity leave, for

others it may mean a prolonged stretch of
full-time parenting. Either way, making
the most of this precious time together
will pay off for all the family and give
you many happy memories to look back
on.

Once a mother has found a group that

she likes and feels comfortable in, she
will slowly make some good friends and
together they would then go along to
another class.

Often mothers from the same antenatal

class go to other mother and baby groups.
The key is to get the parents along to a
group right at the beginning of having a
child (breast feeding group) so it is easier
to go along to others.

Moving to a new area can be quite

traumatic and lonely. Joining a few
groups can provide parents with the
opportunity to build social networks for
themselves and for their children.
Questionnaire on Access to Information.

Rosyth Health Visitor Claire said, “I see a

lot of people with laptops. I was surprised
at the amount of people with internet in
their homes. I would say almost all do!”

The local library also has a computer

suit with access to internet, so everyone
is able to get online if someone doesn’t
have access at home.

How would you like to receive

information on local groups?

Leigh-Anne: “I would prefer a letter to

be honest, or an email or text. A search
would be the best but at the moment it
just brings up stuff which isn’t anywhere
near where you live.”

This illustrates the point that people

really need a simple easy method of
attaining up-to-date local information
on mother and baby groups.

David, “I would like an easy search

facility showing all the groups in my
local area or a short car journey away.”

Posters Advertising Groups.

Here are a few of the posters I saw

advertised around the health centre and
community hall and library.

It proves that there is loads of different

kind of classes and groups on, the
problem is that people have no idea that
they are on!

The problem with using posters are that

many are now out of date. And do not
show any cancellations or change of
times.

Some of the groups are not advertised.

For example, ‘Rymetimes’ at Rosyth
Library.

Depending on how motivated, it is often

left down to the Health Visitors or Admin
staff to make the posters if a particular
group has not.

So how is someone to know that they are

on?

Initial Ideas

I decided to concentrate on the idea of having

a service coordinator responsible for a website
focusing on local groups with input from the
Health Visitors and parents to keep
information up-to-date.
Focus Group Co-Designing.

During my focus group with both Health Instead we opted for a “Like”
Visitors and Parents, I found that both liked button to be added. Similar to popular
the idea of a electronic notice board. social media tools for example Facebook.

This seemed a better solution.

“3 people liked this.” than if it was rated
by stars e.g. 2/5 stars, 3/5 stars 1/5 stars.

This facility could then be used to map

which groups are popular across the
Nation.

They wanted the site to be as simple as

possible, with contact numbers to book a
place or ask for more information. Parents
didn’t wish you have an apply button or for
it to be a log in/account held service. They
wanted it to be quick and easy to enter and 3 Star
browse though the
different local groups.

Rating Groups. What’s Hot What’s Not.

It takes a while for a new group to

establish in a community and if you give a
star rating to a group where only 4 people
are coming regularly and one person gives
a poor rating it might put off others
joining, whereas in a years time it maybe
well established.

And at the end of the day, star ratings are First view - name of group, day of Scroll over to display same view Click into Ad, to read a

Service Flow Chart. Why would the Health Visitors cooperate?

What makes my service different to anything else? I focus on providing • The Health Visitors have a resource to use for up-to-date information to give to clients.
up-to-date information on local groups while liaising with the Health Visitors to provide a • Having clients out and about reduces social isolation and postnatal anxiety and depression.
better service, which in return helps the Health Visitors to provide a better service.
The Coordinator.

The Role of the Service Coordinator:

The Coordinator is put in place to be an

overall organiser. They would be
keeping the site up-to-date and storing
contact numbers along with the age of the
child for suggestion texts, cancellation
texts and reminder texts to be sent out,
targeted to the child’s age.

Having the coordinator in place relieves

Health Visitors from a large amount of
time spent up-dating current lists and
making posters in order to keep track of
groups and to advertise them. This time
can then be spent on more important
responsibilities that their job role
requires.

Who do they work for?

I imagine the coordinator to be working

for the Health Board. Funding could be
found through the Lottery, as they fund
community projects. They will give
money to set projects up but are not keen
on ongoing administration costs, so they
might give money for the cost of the
coordinator for the first 2 years, but after
that other funding would need to be
found. Also joint funding from NHS and
council.

Local businesses might contribute as they

often look for causes to give back to the
community. Big businesses in Rosyth
being Sky, Banks and Building Societies.
