First, elect Root Bridge

Lowest Bridge ID wins: use priority first, then use MAC address to break tie
Default priority is 32768

Next, decide Root Ports on non-root switches

Use best path cost to Root Bridge
10 GB port, cost = 2
1 Gig port, cost = 4
100mb Fast Ethernet port, cost = 19
10mb Ethernet, cost = 100
Break tie with lowest interface ID (i.e. Gi0/1 beats Gi0/2)

Then, decide designated ports for each segment

Every port on Root Bridge is designated port for that segment
Then, need one DP for each remaining segment
Use best path cost to decide
Break tie with lowest Bridge ID (priority first, then MAC address)
Remaining port is in Blocking state
