MILED TOOTH BIT

Milled tooth bit can be used for hole sections of 36 and 26. The
advantages and disadvantages of mild tooth bit are discussed below,

Advantages
1. These bits are very robust and tolerate severe drilling conditions
2. They drill the soft formation with high drilling rates
3. Milled tooth angles are large to withstand the heavy WOB loadings
required to overcome the formations compressive strength.

Disadvantages
1. Wear out relatively quickly
2. They are not effective for hard formations
3. Bit Hours (Bit rotation time) are less

TUNGSTEN CARBIDE BIT

Tungsten carbide bit can be used for hole sections of 17 . The advantages
and disadvantages of tungsten carbide bit are discussed below,

Advantages
1. They have high drilling rates in Medium to very hard formations
2. They can drill long sections before being worn out.
3. Can handle high bit weights and high RPM

Disadvantages
1. Tungsten carbide bit are more costly as compared to mild tooth bit of
same size.
2. These bits do not tolerate shock loadings.
3. More trips to change bit due to wear compared to using PDC bits.
PDC BITS
Poly crystalline diamond compact bits can be used for hole sections of 12
& 8 . The advantages and disadvantages of PDC bit are discussed below,
Advantages
1. PDC bits usually drills twice as fast in shale compared to roller cone.
2. PDC cutters are self sharpening.
3. High ROP as compared to roller cone bits.

Disadvantages
1. They are very expensive
2. PDC cutters deteriorate quickly at temperatures above 700 C. Proper
cooling by mud/hydraulics is very important.
3. Soft to medium hard formations (not applicable in very hard & abrasive
formations)

HYBRID BITS
Hybrid drill bit technology combines roller cones and PDC fixed cutters into a
single, patented design to reduce drilling time in the most complex
applications. . The advantages and disadvantages of hybrid bit are discussed
below,

Advantages

1. They can drill in Hard and inter-bedded formations (lying between beds
or strata of a different rock or mineral).
2. Hybrid drill bit achieve ROP greater than that recorded with the offset
roller cones.
3. Greater cutting efficiency than PDCs.
NATURAL DIAMOND BITS
The diamond bit is really a type of drag bit since it has no movingcones and
operates as a single unit. . The advantages and disadvantages of natural
diamond bit are discussed below,

Advantages

1. They are applicable for hard formations (e.g. where roller cone is too
slow or har too short lifetime)
2. Since diamond bits have no moving parts they tend to last longer than
roller cone bits and can be used for extremely long bit runs.
3. Less trips to change bit due to less wear compared to using roller cone
bits.

Disadvantages
1. The major disadvantage of diamond bits is their cost (sometimes 10
times moreexpensive than a similar sized rock bit).
2. Not applicable for chert and pyrite (will break into pieces and may destroy
the diamonds)
3. Not applicable for very hard broken formations (may break the
diamonds)
