1. ABSTRACT

I choose to write about Fitzgeralds novel The Great Gatsby, because while reading it I felt
something different from what I usually feel when I read a good book. It was that something
that touched my soul , that prompted me to choose this topic. When I read I always try to
define my ideals and this novel was like a bouquet with a timeless fragrance for my soul.

2. INTRODUCTION

The Great Gatsby its a novel well- structured written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in which the
author tries to give a view of American s ideals through the characters. The novel is also a
great representation of the roaring twenties and the American dream that can lead to
emptiness because of the endless search of happiness. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald offers
up on a variety of themes as: justice , power, greed, betrayal, the American dream, and so on.
Of all the themes, maybe , none is more well represented than that of social stratification
divided into old money people, new money and no money ones. Gatsby, the main
character, although its often perceived as a superficial man but he is kind and has a genuine
heart but he has to fight with the past that holds him back, however, constantly being led by
the GREEN LIGHT which represents hope.

3. F. SCOTT FITZGERALDS LIFE

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was
an American novelist and short story writer who tried to illustrate the society during the jazz
age. Altough his first novel's success made him wealthy and let him marry the woman he
loved, his short stories published on publication such as The Saturday Evening Post and
Esquire were the main financial supporting. Later he fell into drinking and his wife too, who

5
had a mental breakdown in the thirties. After the unsuccessful novel Tender is the Night,
Fitzgerald moved to Hollywood and became a scriptwriter. He died of a heart attack in 1940,
at age 44, with his final novel only half completed.
The chief theme of Fitzgeralds work is the aspiration and the idealism he regarded to capture
the essence of the American character. As a social historian Fitzgerald is identified with the
Jazz Age: It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was
an age of satire, he wrote in Echoes of the Jazz Age.
The dominant influences on F. Scott Fitzgerald were aspiration, literature, Princeton, Zelda
Sayre Fitzgerald, and alcohol.

4. THE GREAT GATSBY

During his sophisticated journeys in Europe with his

wife , especially in the southern France, Fitzgerald
wrote what is known as his greatest novel, The Great
Gatsby.
Although it was published in 1925,it was in the 50 and
60 that received the glory deserved as portrait of the
Roaring Twenties and became a part of American high school curricula.
Although The Great Gatsby can be compared to Romeo and Julie due to Fitzgerald's writing
which is almost like a work of poetry, with artistic images you can relate to, and amazing
descriptions that pull out your inner emotions and make your heart ache, from my point of
view his novel means a lot more than just a love story.

6
For the writing of The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald was
inspired from the parties he attended while visiting
Long Islands north shore. He began planning the novel
in 1923, with the desire to produce, how he said:
something new, something extraordinary and beautiful
and simple and intricately patterned . Fitzgerald
repeatedly changed his mind about the book's title and
considered a lot of Cover of the first edition (1925)

alternatives; the title he desired last was Under

the Red, White and Blue.

When first published , The Great Gatsby received

mixed reviews and sold poorly, in fact, when Fitzgerald died in 1940, believed himself a
failure and his work forgotten.

4.1. The plot

The Great Gatsby is the story of eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby as narrated by Nick
Carraway, who lives on Long Island but works in Manhattan. Gatsbys enormous mansion is
next to Carraways modest home. Nick soon learns that Gatsby is in love Daisy Buchanan,
Nicks cousin and the wife of one Tom Buchanan. Buchanan takes his old friend for a day in
the city, where Nick learns that Buchanan has a mistress, Myrtle, the wife of a long island
mechanic.Gatsby sends a message through he and Nicks mutual friend, professional golfer
Jordan Baker, insisting that Nick plan a chance meeting for Gatsby and Daisy. Nick learns
that Gatsby, Jay Gatz at the time, and Daisy had once been in love, but Daisy married Tom
while Gatsby was in Europe during the Great War. After this, Jay Gatz abandons his old
identity and becomes Jay Gatsby. Gatsby chose the site of his house in Long Island because it
was across the bay from Daisys house, from which a green light could be seen at night. Nick
manages to get Gatsby and Daisy together, and while the meeting is awkward at first, Gatsby
soon relaxes and invites Nick and Daisy back to his mansion. After that Gatsby and Daisy
begin to see each other secretly with some frequency. Nick and Gatsby also become close, as

7
Nick is one of the only people who continues to support Gatsby despite the rumors that go
around the man. Buchanan confronts Gatsby in Manhattan about his affair, and the two start
arguing about who it is that Daisy really loves. Daisy claims to love both of them, but she
decides to return to Long Island with Gatsby, not her husband. Daisy drives Gatsbys car, but
she accidentally kills a woman on the side of the road, and then speeds off. It turns out that
this woman is Buchanans mistress, Myrtle.

4.2. The relationship between Gatsby and

Daisy
Jays and Daisys relationship is divided
between two themes, realism and romanticism.
Gatsby is romantic, he wants to win back Daisys
heart and live again the emotions they felt in the
past but unfortunately ,even if she loved him because
of his charming attitude, she cannot love him after
being married to Tom because money is more
important for her. She Gatsby and Daisy in demonstrate it when she

decided to marry Buchanan instead of
waiting for Jay to come back from the war.
Gatsby become rich, bought a fancy house on the other side of the bay where Daisy lived,
become a high class man with elegant manners just to regain her and show her his love,
although his efforts, Daisy doesnt really understands what she means for him and continues
to have a superficial and selfish attitude by letting him think he could have a chance with her.
Heres where realism shows off. Gatsby and Daisy cant be together because Daisy is married
to Tom and has a daughter, besides, money and appereance are too important for her to let
them go and live with Gatsby.

4.3 The symbols in The Great Gatsby

-The green light: the green is associated with the American Dream that Gatsby cannot
achieve because he will never be as good as the old money people, the ones born in a rich
family but, at the same time, the light also represents hope. The green light that shines at the
end of Daisys dock is the hope that Gatsby keeps in his heart till his death.

8
-The valley of ashes: The Valley of Ashes, located between West Egg and New York city
represents the moral decay associated with the uninhibited desire for wealth. It symbolizes
societal decay and the critic situation of the poor, victims of greed and corruption.
-The eyes of doctor T.J. Eckleburg: George Wilson things to them as being the eyes of God.
The location of the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg looking down on everything that takes place in
the Valley of Ashes
may represent God
looking down on a
morally bankrupt
wasteland and doing
nothing about it.
