N MY DECADES OF SERVICE AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFI-
CER BOTH IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD, I HAVE DEVELOPED
PREFERENCES FOR CERTAIN TYPES OF TOOLS AND
WEAPONS THAT HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES EFFECTIVE. BE-
CAUSE OF MY FAMILIARITY WITH THESE PRODUCTS, I TEND TO
RESIST TRYING ALTERNATIVE BRANDS OR TYPES. HOWEVER, I
HAVE OFTEN WONDERED WHAT RIFLE, HANDGUN AND COM-
BAT KNIFE I WOULD CARRY IF I WERE SPECIAL-FORCES OFFI-
CER, SUCH AS A NAVY SEAL.
I have a friend and brother in arms who is a current SEAL. His name
remains classified while he is on active duty, so we know him simply as
Eddie. As I've gotten to know Eddie, I've learned he shares my feelings
about the tools and weapons he uses. For example, Eddie is a firm be-
liever in the M-4 rifle and Sig Sauer handguns, while I prefer the AK-47.
Over the last year, we have frequently collaborated to review and test
various knives and firearms.
The following list comprises knives Eddie and I have tested through
use and abuse and feel are high quality for a good price. All of these
knives are production-made rather than custom, which keeps them
within the price range of most serious buyers. These selections come
from the top six manufacturers that Eddie has found to produce the
toughest, most reliable tactical blades.
Clint Thompson has more than 40 years of law-enforcement experience spanning

three continents. After serving in Kosovo and Iraq, he currently patrols the streets
of Kansas. Eddie, a Navy SEAL who can only be identified by his first name for
security purposes, has served his country for more than 17 years.

Think about what youll use the knife for

For a knife that will be useful both in combat and for
everyday utility, I recommend that the blade measure
between 4 and 7 inches. The knife should have a full
tang one solid piece of steel running from stem to
stern. The blade should be made of either stainless or
high-carbon steel. Unless youll be exposing the knife
to saltwater, corrosion is of no concern; you should
clean your knives just like you would your firearms.

For example, does the knife youre consid-
ering feel comfortable, solid and safe in
your hand? You should factor in the carry-
ing system of the knife as well. Will you be
carrying this knife on your belt? Will it get
in the way of your rucksack or gun? The
proper sheath should play significantly

Once youve found the knife that fits
your needs, you can prolong its life with
routine sharpening and cleaning, as well as
using a high-quality light oil I recom-

ERAL FACTORS. PRIMARILY, THESE ARE:
1) The most successful factory knives over the

last 15 years have all been designed by custom
knife makers. Consequently, many of those early
buyers have made the transition to custom
knives. This trend has continued and will contin-
ue into the future.
2) The validity of the financial markets gave
investors the impetus to explore other avenues
of investment. Today, select custom knives are
viewed as legitimate investments, easily outper-
forming any return on investment (ROI) that
your bank or credit union can currently offer. If
youre looking for proof, you need look no further
than any major knife show, as collectors in some
cases line up hours before the drawing of a
name for a chance to buy a very in-demand
knife.
3) Todays new materials for both blades and
frames combine with the makers use of new
technologies. Knives that were merely concepts
five years ago can now be found for sale all over
the world.
