BROWNINGS STAG HUNTERS DEBUT

BY KI STAFF
PHOTOS BY BROWNING

IT WAS an obvious choice.

Stag handles for knives come from deer antlersso that made it
easy when looking for a name for Brownings new Non-Typical Stag
Hunters to take the name for these knives from a record category of
the Boone and Crockett ratings.

TWO VERSIONS
There are two modelsa skinner and a drop point, both handled in
genuine stag. While stag is a natural material and no two are exactly
alike, the examples weve seen boast fine-grained stag thats remi-
niscent of the classic stag only found on knives from the early 20th
century. The natural curve of the stag fits neatly in the hand.

are functional. These knives you will want visible inside the gun cabinet,
not stuck away in the ammo drawer.

These knives were designed by knife-

maker and designer Russ Kommer, who
drew on his experience as a hunting
guide in Idaho and Alaska for elegant but
functional designs.
Browning has been working on these
knives for more than a year, going
through several trials to get the stag and
the spacers right. Browning actually
changed manufacturers for these knives
when the original manufacturer was hav-
ing a hard time matching the custom look
that Russ designed. Russ went to the
manufacturers factory to work with them
to make certain the fit and finish lived up
to his strict standards.

Inspired By The Wilderness

RUSS KOMMER: THE DESIGNER

R uss Kommers knife designs are exceptionally functional,

allowing the outdoorsman the ability to field dress a moose,
decrease the time it takes to bone an elk, and perform all of the
necessary outdoor chores with efficiency.
Other knives that attempt to replicate the intricacies of his
designs ignore the other fundamental element of the Russ
Kommer formula--each knife is crafted to be elegant enough to
be displayed on a living room mantel or tucked in the back
pocket of a hunter sitting on the mountain, days away from his
last shower.

AN OUTDOOR LIFE
Rather than designs coming from an office, Russ gets his
inspiration in the woods, hills and wilderness across the country.
He grew up in the north woods of Minnesota doing what
everyone he knew was doinghunting, fishing and trapping. His
family and friends bonded during overnighters and long
expeditions, building his understanding of what a hunter needs.
With the outdoors engrained in him from infancy, Russs
adventures took him to the Selway-Bitterroot Mountains of
Idaho where he began to build his career based on his passion.
He led outdoorsmen on big game hunts and gutted and field

Russs adventurous spirit took him to Alaska, known as the
biggest test of big game hunters. The extreme situations he
encountered in the Alaskan wilderness sharpened his skills as an
outdoorsman, but Russ found he didnt like to slow down to
sharpen his knife. When Russ realized he was making a living
with a gun and a knife, he decided he needed a better knife than
he could afford, so began his custom knifemaking career.
Russ now calls Fargo, North Dakota, home. When hes not
spending his free time hunting ducks, geese, pheasants and his
greatest passion whitetail deer on his 1,200-acre ranch, Russ is
spending time redefining excellence in knifemaking. Russ has
spent years as a custom knifemaker and through his work hes
gained an extensive understanding of the different materials
most desirable for each design.

BROWNING AND KOMMER

Russ has always been a fan of Browning. He won the North
Dakota State Trap Shoot with a Browning Citori shotgun. After a
lifetime of carrying Browning products on hunts and
expeditions, Russ joined Browning in 2008 as a knife designer.

THE FIRST CRITERIA: DO THEY HUNT?

Downed game does not skin itself not can it be done by staring at
it. The only way to accomplish the task is to put a knife in your hand
and go to it.
Hunting knife design is like that.
Is the knife designed for appearances by someone who actually
knows how to use a knife? There was a time when it was not a
questionyour better knifemakers were men who were hunting
guides among their other sidelines.
Many knifemakers can make that claim. The late Doyal Nolen shot
elk out his back door in Estes Park, Colorado. George Herron knives
would be carried by all the guides at Cedar Knoll Hunt Club in
Allendale, South Carolina, where each knife might skin 300 deer a
year. Wayne Hendrix was a student of George Herron and also carries
a guides experience from the South Carolina low country. Bill Ankrom
left Michigan for Cody, Wyomingfor hunting.
Perhaps no one can make a better claim for being serious about
hunting and hunting knives than C.J. Buck of Buck Knives. An avid
hunter, proximity to good hunting territory was a factor in the
relocation of Buck Knives from El Cajon, California, to Boise, Idaho. We
know of no other knife company that relocated to be closer to the
hunting ground.
Russ Kommer is a hunting guide in Alaska who also sidelines at
making knives. He designs knives for companies like Columbia River
Knife & Tool and Browning.
Its folks like these from whom you want to buy your hunting
knives. Its very likely they will work.

A CONFESSION
Your Editor has committed an
infraction to the code of knife collecting.
He has taken a Jerry Fisk handmade
hunter and actually used it in the field,
skinning deer and bear. Admittedly, it
was years ago; the knife was one of the
14 knives made by Fisk with his
Journeyman Smith mark.
Considering the value of Fisk knives
reach into five figures, I suspect there are
few who can claim to have committed
the faux pas of actually sharpening and
using a Fisk knife as it was intended!

CUSTOM KNIVES
With the emergence of custom knife-
making, the majority of the knives made
under the custom tag were hunting
knives. A common saying at the time was,

Knifemakers began to produce their

own knife designs rather than the designs
of their customers. Soon factories and
makers merged efforts and the knifemak-
ers came to the forefront not just as knife-
makers, but as hunting knife designers. As
one might expect, the best hunting knives
came from the makers who hunted and
tested their knives in the field.

MOORE MAKER KNIVES, WHICH COME
FROM DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS
TOP PHOTO: Heres the Moore Maker Mini Trail Boss which is a double-bladed
knife with each blade having a lockback system. My 89-year-young dad
accompanied me to Matador, Texas, and was given one of these excellent knives.
My dad just loves this knife and carries it to this day. This Mini Trail Boss is one
excellently made knife and like all Moore Maker Knives was made in the USA.

that knifemaking wasnt just something he

did, but is something thats part of him.
Tonys knowledge of knife design and

and research that alone would make him a
valuable member of the knife community.
He decided to put that knowledge to use

Tony doesnt count on glues and epoxies to hold them together; he

pins all his pins.
On the handle material, he follows a step-by-step process. First,
he drills all his holes, and then reams them to the full depth with a
2-degree reamer, after which he reams them again at the top.
On the second reaming he uses a 10 degrees reamer. He wants
the pin to physically hold the scales in place and the body togeth-
er, but with the 10-degree reamer hes making sure. As Tony said,
Im not asking too much of the pin by trying to pin it too much.
At 10 degrees, theres enough swell to hold the knife tightly to-
gether and yet not put too much pressure on the frame or incur a
cracked circumference on the pin head. The body of the pin swells
to fill the rest of the hole making, its impossible for the parts to
separate even if something were to compromise part of the pin
head.

BOSE-GENERATION 2
While on my visit to Tony Boses shop, I had the chance to visit with
Tonys son Reese. They work side by side in the same shop on their
knives each day. Reese is a hunter, marksman and a primitive skills
enthusiast. He moves around the shop making a knife as if it was second
nature to him, as natural as breathing.
Tony has taught Reese well and Reese possesses the same dedication
to the art. He has the knife gene indeed. We can expect to see years of
excellent work coming forth from Reeses bench when hes not out
enjoying the outdoors.

JEWELERS LOUPE INSPECTION

As in every step of the process while
pinning the pin, Tony uses a jewelers
loupe to inspect the swelling of the pin.
That loupe is also used to inspect his hand
rubbing, grinding and the joints on his
handle material. The entire knife goes
through scrutiny with that loupe. Tony told
me, If you want to put a demand on qual-

THE DRAWING
Tony has long followed the tradition of holding a drawing annually at the Blade Show.
The practice of holding a drawing has been around since the 1970s when Jess Horn originated
the concept. The drawing allows more people a chance to buy one of Tonys knives rather than
have one collector with deep pockets show up early and buy the complete table. Any custom
dealer would be happy to do that.
The process is simple. You enter the drawing and if your name is pulled, you get to choose from
the remaining selection of the knives available.
At the 2013 Blade Show, I had a chance to talk with Tony and I asked him what was the largest
number of entrants in a drawing. Tony told me the highest was more than 300 people.
