SELF-ACCEPTANCE AND SELF-ESTEEM: AN

EXAMINATION INTO THEIR RELATIONSHIP AND THEIR


EFFECT ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH

ABSTRACT
In the current era of education, student self-acceptance stands as a
promise of improved student motivation in social skills and learning. Correctly
implemented, student self- assessment can promote self-acceptance through
their observation on themselves. It creates a better chance to make a decision to
improve oneself by the students. Its powerful impact on student performance
both in academic and non-academic area is valuable. This article defines student
self-assessment and its importance in influencing students self-acceptance and
developing reflective skills.

INTRODUCTION
Self-acceptance is an individuals satisfaction or happiness with
oneself, and is thought to be necessary for good mental health. Self-acceptance
involves self-understanding, a realistic, awareness of ones strengths and
weakness lie. If you can build yourself criticism and you can begin to face the
challenges in your life and succeed.

In social psychology, self-acceptance is the process of looking at


oneself in order to assess the aspects that are importance to ones identity.
Self-assessment in achievement behavior suggests that self-acceptance is a way
in which self-esteem can be enhanced in the future. It is a reflective skill that
helped to achieve self-acceptance.

Through self-assessment, students simply check off answers on a


multiple choice test and grade themselves. Actually, it involves much more that.
Self-acceptance is more accurately defined as a process by which students,

Monitor and evaluate the quality of their thinking and behavior when
learning.
Identify the strategies that improve their understanding and skills.
Self-acceptance helps student to think about their own learning,
learning process, behavior and problems and then, find ways to improve. For
teacher administering self-assessment is a very efficient method of getting
information about the students, because it gathers direct answers provided by
the students themselves. It is an excellent way for the teacher to identify
problems, difficulties or questions that students may have.

When students are able to analyze their own progress, they can find
ways, methods or strategies to make improvements and be better students and
learners. Some students tend to ignore the corrections, suggestions and
feedback made by the teachers. But when a learner is forced to correct himself
or herself. There exists a higher probability that those errors will be analyzed
and omitted. Self-acceptance helps the students to get a better idea of the goals
that they are trying to reach as it help to do self-correction.

Self-assessment provides the opportunity to discover where a


persons true interests, talents, values and abilities lie. It is also helpful when
creating goals and understanding ones personality. Self-assessment can take
place at almost any point in a persons life, being a student it is important for
him to develop a sense of self.

Self-acceptance can be conceptualized as the combination of three


components. It is a cyclical and ongoing process self-monitoring, self-
evaluation, identification and implementation of instructional correctives as
needed. Students identify their learning and performance strategies; provide
feedback to them and determine the next steps or plans to enhance their
performance. Studies about self-acceptance and tries to understand how it helps
to develop self-acceptance, self-esteem and reflective thinking skills.

OBJECTIVES
To try to analyze what is student self-acceptance.
To evaluate how it helps to form self-esteem.
To emphasize the importance of self-acceptance in the personality
development of a student.
To evaluate how the administration of self-assessment help in
developing self-acceptance.
To evaluate the importance of self-acceptance in developing reflective
thinking skills.
To conclude the idea of importance of student self-assessment in
determine profession goal through developing reflective thinking skills.

DATA COLLECTION AND METHODOLOGY


Collection of data was done using survey method. Rating scale
was prepared for it. Rating scale is a set of categories designed to elicit
information about a quantitative or qualitative attribute. I prepared a 3 point
rating scale. I set criteria and provide 3 response selections to describe the
quality or frequency to judge themselves about their work. The descriptive
scales were always, sometimes and never. This self-acceptance is made to check
the social skill of the people. Taking social skill as a topic for assessment. I try
to studies the personal and academic life. The tool contains six statements. Each
statement has 3 answers- always, sometimes, never and it contains 2, 1 and 0 as
tally marks respectively for the positive questions and vice versa.

ANALYSIS
The development of effective self-acceptance takes considerable
time and effort. Self-evaluation builds on a natural tendency to check out the
progress of ones own learning, their behavior and attitudes. Self-acceptance
tasks encourage student ownership in their future by developing a career goal in
them.

The article helped to find out the importance of self-acceptance for


the personal development of the students through the development of self-
esteem, self-acceptance and reflective thinking skills. Out of 20 samples
selected from 39 pupil of St.Thomas H.S.S, Keezhillam I collected the data.
Among which 7 students responded well, 8 students should average response
and the rest of the pupil responded not in an expected way.

Almost all girls had given positive answers and only a few of them
tick never for some statements. But the boys were most trustworthy. They had
given sometimes and never as answers to most of the statements. Only a few
have given always as answers to positive statement. There was variety in
answering. This shows the difference in personality.

The three components of the self-assessment programme were


completed in this study. Self-monitoring, a skill necessary for effective self-
acceptance involves focused attention to some aspects of behavior or thinking.
Students gave deliberate attention to what they are doing, how they behave and
what are their attitudes. The second step self-judgment involves identifying
progress toward targeted performance; it helps them to know what they are and
what they want to be. Through the third step, students choose subsequent
learning goals and activities to improve their goods, correct their mistakes and
determine the self.

CONCLUSION
Self-acceptance is one of the motives that drive self-evaluation
along with self-verification and enhancement. Self-acceptance motive will
prompt people to seek information to confirm their uncertain self-concept rather
than their certain self-concept. Self-acceptance helps to enhance the students
certainty of their own self knowledge. Through self-assessing there is a
possibility that student self concept or self-esteem is going to be damages but
actually it is a way in which self-esteem can be enhanced in future. Self-
acceptance is the process of looking at oneself in order to assess aspects that are
important to ones identity. It is a reflective in nature. Reflective thinking skills
are developed through self-assessment. IT is one of the motives that drive self-
evaluation, along with self-verification and self-enhancement.
