C2 - BLOOD CIRCULATION AND TRANSPORT

Answer all the questions.

1. Diagram 1 shows the human circulatory system.

Diagram 1

(a) (i) Draw arrows in the given boxes to show the direction of flow of blood in blood vessels, E, F, G
and H.
[4 marks]

(ii) Complete the following sentence.

Blood vessel E has oxygen content than blood vessel F while blood
vessel H has . carbon dioxide content than blood vessel G.

(b) Dong Wook learnt that the walls of some blood vessels, like arteries, that carry blood to all parts
of the body are very thick. He carried out an investigation on different types of balloon of different
thickness to find out the purpose of a thick wall in an artery.

Procedure :
1. The thickness of the skin of the balloons is observed and recorded in Table 1.
2. Each of the balloons is blown 5 times.
3. The balloons diameter is measured and recorded.

Table 4 shows the result of his investigation.

Types of balloon A B C

Thickness of the balloon skin Very thin Thin Thick

Diameter of the inflated Could not be

3 The apparatus was used in a science activity.

The following steps were carried out:

Step 1 : Two similar hibiscus plants, about 25 cm tall, were selected.

Step 2 : The plants were pulled out of the soil and the roots were washed to remove any remaining
soil.

Step 3 : The plants were trimmed until ten leaves were left on each plant.

Step 4 : Each plant was placed in a measuring jug filled with water, and labelled F and G, as shown
in the figure above.

Step 5 : 10 ml of cooking oil was poured into each jug.

Step 6 : A layer of grease was applied to the leaves in G.

Step 7 : The plants were placed in the Sun for three hours. The initial and final water levels in both
jugs were recorded in the table below.

Plant F Plant G

Initial water level 75 ml 75ml

Final water level 68 ml 75 ml
