SECTION 12000

FURNITURE

PART 1- GENERAL

1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. The drawings and general provisions of the contract, including General and
Particular Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, are included for
reference in this specification section.

B. Refer to Furniture drawings, etc. for the furniture layout at various locations.

C. The Manual of Loose Furnishings is included by reference in this specification


section.

D. Specification Sections 11054-Library Furnishings and 10682- High Density


Shelving.

1.02 RELATED SECTIONS

A. All sections affected by this section and all sections affecting this section shall be
considered Related Sections

1.03 SUMMARY OF WORK

A. This section of the Work consists of the procurement, installation, setup,


connection to power/data where applicable and final cleaning of the following:
1. Systems Furniture.
2. Executive Office Furniture.
3. Custom Furniture.
4. Loose Furnishings.
5. Library Furnishings refer to Section 11054-Library Furnishings.
6. High Density Shelving refer to Section 10682- High Density Shelving.

B. Basis of Design.
1. The first furniture item listed for each type of furnishing is the Basis of
Design. Other acceptable manufacturers follow. These other
manufacturers may or may not involve slight modifications to the layout or
infrastructure. All costs associated with such modifications shall be the
responsibility of this furniture package provider.
2. The Contractor can price for either recommended product or Alternate 1 or
Alternate 2.
3. Furniture substitutions are not acceptable.
4. Fabric substitutions are not acceptable.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of


individual components and profiles, over all configurations, and finishes for each
workstation or office furnishing component.

B. Shop Drawings: Include detailed layout plans of each floor level, elevations, 3-
Dimensional drawings of each typical workstation or office with identification of
associated finishes. The manufacturer will work closely with the Engineer to
develop a more detailed layout based on the furniture plans contained herein. For
any specified products that have modifications, special or custom features
provide appropriate notes on shop drawings. Fabrication shall not commence until
approval has been given by the Engineer. Show complete details of fabrication.
Include all dimensions and any related field dimensions. Show complete
assemblies and connections. Note finishes and materials. Include any
manufacturers design or assembly concerns or comments, if any, on shop
drawings.

C. Operating and Maintenance Data: For each item provide data regarding operating,
adjusting, repairing, and replacing systems and/or office furniture as outlined in
Division 1.

D. Provide draft warranties as listed in Clause 1.06 WARRANTY below for each
furnishing item.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Obtain product(s) through one source from a single manufacturer.

B. Fabricators/Installers shall be experienced and regularly engaged in the fabrication


and installation of the type of work required herein for not less than five (5) years;
employing only experienced personnel using proper facilities and appropriate
methods for execution of the Work. Fabricators shall have a demonstrable record
of satisfactorily completing comparable scopes of work on time while meeting
designated quality standards.

C. Fabrication & Construction: All work is subject to specified Premium level of quality
from appropriate reference standards; any reference to a quality level in these
Specifications defined in the referenced standard shall be considered a part of
these Specifications. Any work not specified with a level of quality shall be not less
than Premium quality.

D. Coordinate fabric utilization such that when the same fabric is used on separate

E. Warranty for each product shall be as specified in Section 1.6 Warranty.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Coordinate the delivery of product with the Engineer. Do not deliver systems
furniture or office furniture until spaces to receive them are clean, dry, and ready
for installation.

B. Protect systems and office furniture from damage during delivery, handling,
storage, installation, and after installation.

C. The Contractor/Manufacturer is responsible for temporary storage of all product


until the time for delivery and installation.

1.06 WARRANTY

A. General Warranty: Special warranty specified in this Article shall not deprive the
Owner of other rights Owner may have under the other provisions of the Contract
Documents and shall be in addition to, and run concurrent with, other warranties
made by the Contractor under the requirements of the Contract Documents.

B. Manufacturers Warranty: Written warranty, executed by the Manufacturer, to agree


to repair or replace product, free of charge, that which does not comply with
requirements or fails within specified warranty period.
1. Products shall be free from defects in material and workmanship.
2. Provide a minimum 12 year warranty on systems furniture, components
and accessories, and labor to correct deficiencies unless otherwise noted.
3. Provide a minimum 10 year warranty on all electrical components.
4. Warranty period shall begin from date of substantial completion.
5. Provide a minimum 5 year warranty on wood veneers and wood case-
goods.

PART 2- PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. This specification establishes the minimum product requirements for all materials
required for the installation of a complete and usable system of free-standing
workstations, panels, and office furniture.

B. Typical workstations shown on the furniture drawings for these works are generic
representations of the requirements and are not intended to represent the actual
and specific workstation that shall be provided.

C. Quantities: Refer to the furniture plans for complete furniture.

D. On the attached furniture floor plans, each piece of furniture or group of pieces of
furniture symbol is tagged with an item number that refers back to the Manual of
Loose Furnishings. It is the responsibility of the Contractor to verify these quantities
and notify the Engineer of any discrepancies and provide all the furniture as per the
Tender/Contract Documents.

E. Accessories : Provide all accessories for each workstation (1) letter trays, (2)
diagonal tray, (3) vertical tray; etc. and associated hardware required for
installation.

F. Storage Units, where indicated.


1. Enclosed overhead units shall be all metal, color coordinated with overall
metal finish selection.
2. All storage units in each workstation shall have locks and be keyed alike.

G. Electrical:
1. Provide (2) work-surface duplex and double data outlets per workstation
that plugs onto the recessed floor outlet in the access floor below the
workstation.
2. Provide task lights below enclosed overhead units. Fixture should be length
of the overhead unit with a length of cord that can plug into the recessed
floor outlet below the workstation.

H. Finishes:
1. Upholstery-
a) Fabrics as be selected by the Engineer and shown in the Manual of
Loose Furnishings.
2. Metal
a) See manufacturer product specifications for approved metal finish
colors.
b) All exposed metal components shall be consistent color.
c) Hardware metal shall be selected from manufacturers full line by
the Engineer.
3. Work-surfaces
a) Laminate color and finish shall be selected by the Engineer from
the manufacturers full range of selections.
b) Recut Veneer color and finish shall be selected by the
Engineer/Engineers Representative from the manufacturers full
range of selections.
c) All work-surfaces other than wood shall be consistent in
appearance.
4. Wood veneer
a) The Manual of Loose Furnishings for approved wood veneer finish
b) All wood veneer finishes shall be consistent and of Premium
quality.

PART 3- EXECUTION

3.01 PREPARATION FOR INSTALLATION

A. Upon the Award of contract, the successful bidder shall field verify and coordinate
all related field conditions and areas. Any questionable field conditions, including,
but not limited to hold dimensions and windows, shall be brought to the attention of
the Engineer.

B. Verify field dimensions of openings to receive furniture prior to placing order.

C. Verify dimensions of walls to receive furnishings.

D. Verify upholstery yardage requirements for each furniture item using fabric
manufacturers width. Coordinate furniture placement such that fabrics of the
same dye lot are used to provide a consistent appearance.

E. Verify electrical power and data locations in field, coordinate with the Contractor.

F. Submit Operation and Maintenance manual to the Owner for approval four (4)
weeks prior to furniture installation. Furnish Owner with three (3) printed and
bound copies of manufacturers recommendations for the care, cleaning and
maintenance of upholstery and finishes. Include detailed written instructions of
methods for cleaning and removal of stains and burns. Provide manufacturers
contact information for each product. At time of installation coordinate with Owner
in order that appropriate personnel conduct an in person orientation session for
Owners housekeeping staff, properly educating them regarding proper care and
maintenance.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. The installation shall include all items necessary to provide a complete and
functioning work environment.

B. All systems and office furniture shall be plumb and level and installed on top of
flooring without penetration of the finished floor or use of floor fasteners.

C. Coordinate phasing of installation of systems furniture and office furniture with


building construction.

D. Contractor at all times shall keep the project site in a neat, clean and safe condition
and free from rubbish caused by performance of the work. At the owners request
and in any event at the completion of work, contractor shall remove all waste
materials and rubbish from and about the project site, as well as all tools,
equipment, machinery and surplus materials

E. Installation shall be by skilled workmen, trained specifically for the installation of


the approved specified products in accordance with the manufacturers
recommended standards and procedures and shall be in accordance with the
Drawings and Specifications.

3.03 ADJUSTING, CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Adjust hinges, doors, latches and locks to operate easily without binding. Verify
that workstations are keyed alike and working properly.

B. Clean interior and exposed exterior surfaces.

C. Protect systems furniture and office furniture from damage, abuse, dust, dirt, stain,
paint or other damage.

D. Touch up marred surfaces and finishes, or replace components that cannot be


restored to factory finish appearance. Only use materials and procedures
recommended by the manufacturer.

SECTION 12001

FURNITURE GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS-1 FOR


MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION PROCEDURES

PART 1- GENERAL

1.01 STATUTORY OBLIGATIONS

The Contractor shall comply with all regulations, notices and decrees that shall effect the
execution of this Contract and pay all fees in respect thereof.

The Contractor shall give all notices to the Engineer and obtain approval before removing
any fixtures, fittings or services which may belong to others.

1.02 SITE ADMINISTRATION

The Contractor shall allow for all risks and costs attributable to delay in obtaining labour
and materials other than delays as specifically provided for in the Conditions of Contract.

The Contractor shall allow for the recruitment, hiring and accommodation of all labour
required for the execution of the works and adhere to all local rules and regulations.
Accommodation and labour lines shall be sufficient for the Contractor's own workmen and
sub-contractors.

No important operation shall be carried out without notice in writing being given to the
Engineer sufficiently in advance of the operation to enable him to make such arrangements
as he may deem necessary for its inspection.

Failure to obtain all necessary labour shall not relieve the Contractor of his responsibilities
and obligations under the Contract.

1.03 CHECKLIST SYSTEMS

The Engineer will require the use of a checklist system for the proper implementation and
recording on site. Implement a checklist system for the Engineer's approval and abide by
and adhere to these procedures.

1.04 PROJECT MEETINGS

Hold regular Project Meetings as necessary for the proper management and coordination
of the Contract and as required by the Engineer.

Attend all meetings and inform Sub-contractors and Suppliers when their presence is
required.

The Chair will be taken by the Engineers Representative.

Minutes shall be taken and distributed by the Engineers Representative. Copies will be
furnished to the Contractor.

1.05 NOTICE OF COMPLETION

Give the Engineer three weeks notice of the anticipated date of final completion of the

Each week provide, for verification by the Engineer, a record showing the quantity and type
of furniture, furnishing and equipment delivered to the site on each day of the week.

SECTION 12002

FURNITURE GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS-2

PART 1- GENERAL

1.01 GENERALLY

A. All items shall be new, of first quality, and conform to the drawings and Specifications.
Factory seconds will not be accepted. Installation shall be where shown on the
drawings and as per manufacturers manual/catalogues. All items are to be provided
according to Specifications. Each item must have a sticker identifying the
manufacturers. It must be fixed in an inconspicuous location.

B. All work relating to Furniture and Furnishing is to be fully co-ordinated with all other
construction work including scheduling, dimensional compatibility, co-ordination
with telephone, data and electrical systems, consistent dye lots and finish colours
for the like items which may be procured at various times during the Contract
period.

C. Although such work is not specifically indicated, furnish and install all
supplementary or miscellaneous items, appurtenances and devices incidental to or
necessary for a sound, secure and complete installation.

D. Directions and descriptions of work, materials and workmanship given elsewhere


are not fully repeated in the Bills of Quantities. Each rate will be deemed to allow
for everything described by or apparent from all the documents or as can be
reasonably inferred as being necessary for complete and proper execution of the
items of work.

All items in the Bills of Quantities shall be read as being inclusive of all other
information contained in the Contract Agreement, the Conditions of Contract,
Specifications and the Drawings.

E. Generally the descriptions of work shall be read as including a fixing system, if


needed. Fixing system include :-

1. Fasteners (e.g. nails, screws, bolts, adhesives) :


2. Holding devices (e.g. plugs, anchors):
3. Associated labours (e.g. drilling, tapping, boring, casting in, countersinking,
stopping):
4. Submitting particulars of fixing systems not specified in detail to the
Engineer and obtaining approval before putting the work in hand.

1.02 SUBMITTALS

A. Prepare and submit a single comprehensive submittal in accordance with the


requirements set forth below. Prepare three (3) copies of all submittal
requirements. The submittal package is to be submitted by the Contractor to the
Engineers Representative within a period of 45 days after the Date of Enterprise.
The submittals use as follows :-

B. Product Data and Shop Drawings: Submit three (3) copies of product data
including brochures, catalogues etc. for standard items, shop drawings for custom
items. Shop drawings and product data are to show all dimensions, construction
details, finishes, fabrics, hardware and other pertinent information. Product data or
shop drawings are to be labelled with item code number, manufacturer dimensions,
and finishes.

C. Fabric Samples : Submit three (3) Fabric cuttings 400 x 400mm for all fabrics,
panel fabrics to be used for the Contract.

D. Finish Samples : Submit three (3) samples of all wood, metal and plastic finishes
used on furniture. Samples to be a minimum of 300 x 300 mm. These samples
shall be used as the standard for quality and colour of the finish(es)

1.03 COORDINATION

A. The phased installation of Furniture and Furnishings requires careful coordination


to ensure the correctness of items supplied, consistency of finishes and fabrics and
proper fit or placement within the designated spaces. Special attention is drawn to
the following issues :-

B. The Contractor is responsible for the consistency of finishes for all wood, metal and
plastic finishes as well as fabrics and leathers regardless of when items are
purchased.

C. The Contractor is responsible for the verification of dimensions of as-built spaces


and ensure that Furniture and Furnishings can be installed as specified.

D. The Contractor is responsible for the verification of dimensions of al-built spaces


and ensure that Furniture and Furnishings can be installed as specified.

E. The Contractor is responsible for the coordination of Furniture and Furnishings


placement with the building electrical, telephone, and data/communication and
HVAC systems.

F. Procedures and/or management tools which the Contractor is expected to employ


in undertaking the work are as follows :-

G. Schedules: The contractor is required to incorporate all major phases of work


related to the Furniture and Furnishings in the schedule.

H. Critical milestones are to be identified and the schedule is to be up-dated as


necessary.

I. Tracking Report: Tracking by item or manufacturer of the progress of orders from


order entry, acknowledgment, quality control inspection, warehousing,
consolidation, shipment, receipt at site, and installation shall be carried out
continuously as well as reported to the Engineers Representative on a periodic
basis as instructed by him.

1.04 QUALITY CONTROL

A. It is the Contractor's responsibility to ensure that all items delivered and installed
for the Contract reflect the highest possible quality levels available in the Industry.
Procedures and/or management tools which the Contractor is expected to employ
in undertaking work are as follows :-

B. Order Acknowledgments : Order acknowledgments from the Vendor to be


reviewed and approved by the Contractor. Copies are to be provided to the
Engineers Representative.

C. Production Finishes Samples: Production finish samples of custom finishes to


be obtained from Vendors during the production process. Samples are to be
verified against control samples maintained by the Contractor.

D. Testing and Samples : The Contractor shall allow for the supply of samples of all
materials for the approval of the Engineer. Initial samples, once approved, shall
form the standard for reviewing subsequent samples of materials taken at frequent
and regular intervals during the course of the work. Work and materials from which
samples are taken which, in the opinion of the Engineer, fail to match the standard
of the approved samples shall be rejected.

E. The cost of providing such samples together with the cost of mailing or transporting
the samples to and from the Engineer shall be borne by the Contractor.

1.05 MATERIALS

A. Products shall be from the specified manufacturer or from approved equal


manufacturer. No custom manufactured products will be acceptable as equal.

B. Woods shall be uniform grain and colour. Unless specified, tech-grain, or


reconstituted veneers shall not be substituted for solid wood veneers. Wood
veneers on Furniture and Furnishings items in the same space are to match in
grain and colour. Seasonal solid wood to be used where specified.

C. Fabrics and leathers shall be free of defects, streaking and discoloration. Fabrics
to be treated to resist stains. All fabrics and upholstery shall be to the approval of
Kuwait Fire Department.

D. All Stainless steel finishes, plated finishes and painted metal finishes shall be free
of any flaws or defects.

1.06 PROCUREMENT

A. The Contractor is to issue purchase orders and/or delivery orders on a timely


basis, consistent with the overall construction schedule. Purchase documents as
well as the special instruction notes below are to be provided.

B. Tagging Instructions: Tag or mark each crate, carton and package of furnishings
on the exterior with an identification of the items according to the code and location
as given on specification on sheets.

C. Special Packing Instructions: The vendor/s should be instructed to pack all
items to withstand potential damage from ocean shipment and handling at the
premises. Special care is also to be taken to avoid adhesive and packing materials
which may melt at high temperatures.

D. Environmental Concern: The Contractor is to ensure that all adhesives, finish


materials, etc. used in the fabrication of items are compatible with environmental
conditions at the Contract site. Failure to verify such materials may lead to
problems such as separation of veneers and peeling/cracked finishes.

E. Orders for upholstered furniture should have special instructions regarding


application of the correct side of the fabric and fabric direction. Dye lot samples of
fabrics should be obtained and approved prior to shipment to the furniture
manufacture. A sample of the fabric should accompany all orders to ensure that
the correct fabric is used.

F. Throughout the procurement process, the Contractor is to maintain written files


documenting all telephone discussions with the Vendors as well as copies of all
written correspondence.

G. Prior to placing orders, the Contractor shall ensure that hardware, accessories and
fixings are being supplied from the Vendor or third party source. In addition, the
Contractor shall verify that items can fit through doorways and elevators as
necessary.

1.07 SHIPPING I RECEIVING

A. A Comprehensive Transportation Plan is to be presented with the Management


Plan.

B. The Contractor is to make arrangements directly with the transporter or through a


supplier to have orders transported to the Contractor's consolidation warehouse.

C. Upon receipt of orders at an air conditioned warehouse, items are to be inspected


for correct tagging, visual damage to cartons and random inspection for correct
items, finish and fabrics of furniture. Receiving reports are to be prepared and kept
on file. As necessary, make arrangements for the replacement of damaged items.

1.08 WAREHOUSING / CONSOLIDATION

A. Items are to be stored in air conditioned warehouse facilities which are clean and
with consistent and moderate temperatures and humidity. Items are to be stored or
stacked so that damage is prevented.

B. Items are to be staged (i.e. organised) and containerised according to the staging
plan for installation see installation.

C. A detailed packing list with items identified by item code number, manufacturer and
model number is to be produced during the container packing process. A copy of
the packing list to be placed inside each container as well.

D. Items are to be safely braced and packed into the containers to minimise
movement during transit. Care is to be taken not to stack heavy items on top of
lightweight or fragile items. When necessary cardboard cartons are to be
reinforced with wood frames or skidded to avoid damage and ease of handling.

1.09 SHIPMENT AND RECEIPT AT PREMISES

A. The Contractor is responsible for the preparation of all export and import
documentation in compliance with individual countries and manufacturer's
regulations.

B. Upon arrival of the shipments at the project site or interim local air conditioned
warehouse, the Contractor is to provide an inventory of all items as they are off
loaded from the container. Any discrepancies are to be reported immediately. If
items are not immediately installed the original packing material should be retained
to provide maximum protection.

1.10 INSTALLATION

A. All installation work shall be supervised by the Contractors staff who have
experience in handling and installing systems furniture and Furniture and
Furnishings items.

B. Prepare and submit a detailed staging plan indicating the personnel and Sub-
contractors to be used, proposed schedule, sequencing of materials, and
coordination arrangements.

C. Schedule and conduct a pre-installation conference at the site of the Works to


explain the installation process and schedule and coordinate with installation
personnel. This conference shall be held approximately 15 days before installation
and shall include the personnel designated by the Engineer.

D. Responsibilities include the uncrating and the complete assembly of all Furniture
and Furnishings items. Each item shall be inspected, cleaned and adjusted as
necessary to assure readiness for operation or use. All items shall be free from
scratches, marks, dust, dirt, tape. labels and adhesive residue.

E. The installation of furniture shall begin only after all construction, electrical,
painting, carpeting and any other finish work has been completed in the space to
be furnished. In addition, the HVAC system is to be fully operational, before the
furniture is installed.

F. All items shall be placed and located as shown on the Drawings. Furniture shall be
set level, drawers and doors with locks and keys shall operate smoothly and not
bend or roll.

G. Installed work shall be free from marrying, scratches, dirt, etc. Damaged items will
be rejected and it will be the Contractor's responsibility to replace within a schedule
agreed with the Engineers Representative.

1.11 CLEAN-UP AND PROJECT CLOSE-OUT

A. Keep work areas clean and tidy and dispose daily of packaging, wrappings, and
other debris as the work progresses.

B. Clean surfaces, complying with the manufacturer's Instructions, upon completion of
the installation.

C. Preliminary Inventory Inspection: Arrange for a joint inventory/Inspection between


the Contractor and the Engineer after the Furniture and Furnishings have been
assembled and placed in designated locations. The purpose of this preliminary
inspection/inventory is as follows:

D. Verify that total quantities are provided in the proper locations.

E. Confirm that the items meet the Specifications.

F. Identify any other discrepancy that may require the item to be repaired or replaced.
If the inspection shows any item to be unacceptable due to damage or shortage,
the Contractor shall be fully responsible for its replacement or to provide additional
items as specified in the Contract Documents.

G. Prepare a punchlist of items that must be completed and/or corrected prior to final
acceptance.

H. After all discrepancies noted in the preliminary inspection have been corrected,
schedule a final inspection with the Engineers Representative.

1.12 MAINTENANCE PERIOD RESPONSIBILITY

A. Be responsible to repair and replace all that could be attributed to faulty material
and workmanship.

B. The Contractor is to be responsible for the instruction and training of the


Employers facilities maintenance personnel in the operation and maintenance of
the Furniture and Furnishings. Facilities maintenance personnel should, after the
training, be able to adjust mechanical components of furniture for example: drawer
slides and locks; disassemble, relocate and reassemble all Systems furniture.

1.13 FINAL INSPECTION/PROJECT RECORD BOOK/ACCEPTANCE AT THE END OF


MAINTENANCE PERIOD

A. The Contractor shall supply two copies of updated Project Record Books to record
the following items.
Fabric test reports.
As-installed room list/inventory of all Furniture and Furnishings
Furniture maintenance manual.

B. The Engineers Representative must approve/accept the final inventory and update
Project Record Books prior to final acceptance.

1.14 GUARANTEE

A. Furnish the following information to the Employer.


A list of all items covered by a guarantee with make and model numbers.
A copy of the manufacturer's or Vendor's guarantee documents.
The date and period during which the guarantee is in effect.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Manufacturer's authorized representative who is trained and


approved for installation of units required for this Project.

1. Provide AWI Quality Certification Program certificate indicating that manufactured


wood casework complies with requirements.

D. Product Designations: Drawings indicate sizes, configurations, and finish material of


manufactured wood casework by referencing designated manufacturer's catalog
numbers. Other manufacturers' casework of similar sizes and door and drawer
configurations, of same finish material, and complying with the Specifications may be
considered. Refer to Division 1 Section "Product Requirements."

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver manufactured wood casework only after painting, utility roughing-in, and similar
operations that could damage, soil, or deteriorate casework have been completed in
installation areas. If casework must be stored in other than installation areas, store only
in areas where environmental conditions meet requirements specified in "Project
Conditions" Article.

B. Keep finished surfaces covered with polyethylene film or other protective covering
during handling and installation.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install manufactured wood casework until


spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, work
above ceilings is complete, and temporary HVAC system is operating and maintaining
ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder
of the construction period.

B. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install manufactured wood casework until


building is enclosed, wet work is complete, and HVAC system is operating and
maintaining temperature between 16 and 32 deg C and relative humidity between 25
and 55 percent during the remainder of the construction period.

C. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of construction contiguous with


manufactured wood casework by field measurements before fabrication.

1.7 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate layout and installation of framing and reinforcements in walls and partitions
for support of manufactured wood casework.

1.8 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Contractor agrees to repair or replace components of manufactured


wood casework that fail in materials or workmanship within specified maintenance
period of two years.

1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:


a. Delamination of components or other failures of glue bond.
b. Warping of components.
c. Failure of operating hardware.
d. Deterioration of finishes.

2. Warranty Period: Five years from the end of the maintenance period mentioned
above.

1.9 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish complete touchup kit for each type and finish of manufactured wood casework
provided. Include scratch fillers, stains, finishes, and other materials necessary to
perform permanent repairs to damaged casework finish.

2.5 FINISH FOR WOOD-FACED MANUFACTURED CASEWORK

A. Preparation: Sand lumber and plywood for manufactured wood casework construction
before assembling. Sand edges of doors and drawer fronts and molded shapes with
profile-edge sander. Sand casework after assembling for uniform smoothness at least
equivalent to that produced by 220-grit sanding and without machine marks, cross
sanding, or other surface blemishes.

B. Staining: Remove fibers and dust and apply wash-coat sealer and stain to exposed
and semiexposed surfaces as required to provide uniform color and to match approved
samples.

C. Finishing Closed-Grain Woods: Apply manufacturer's standard two-coat, baked, clear


finish consisting of a thermosetting catalyzed sealer and a thermosetting catalyzed
conversion varnish. Sand and wipe clean between applications of sealer and topcoat.
Topcoat may be omitted on concealed surfaces.

2.6 CASEWORK HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES

A. Hardware, General: Unless otherwise indicated, provide manufacturer's standard


satin-finish, commercial-quality, heavy-duty hardware.

1. Use threaded metal or plastic inserts with machine screws for fastening to
particleboard except where hardware is through-bolted from back side.

B. Frameless Concealed Hinges (European Type): BHMA A156.9, Type B01602,


170]degrees of opening, self-closing.

C. Pulls: Solid stainless-steel wire pulls, fastened from back with two screws. For sliding

2.7 COUNTERTOPS

A. Countertops, General: Provide smooth, clean exposed tops and edges in uniform
plane free of defects. Provide front and end overhang of 25 mm over base cabinets.

B. Plastic-Laminate Tops: Plastic-laminate sheet, shop bonded to both sides of 19-mm


plywood or particleboard. Sand surfaces to which plastic laminate is to be bonded.

C. Solid-Surfacing-Material Tops: 19-mm thick, solid-surfacing material with front edge


built up with same material.

D. Stainless-Steel Tops: Made from 1.6-mm thick, stainless-steel sheet.

1. Weld shop-made joints, and grind and polish surfaces to produce uniform,
directional, textured, polished finish indicated, free of cross scratches. When
polishing is completed, passivate and rinse surfaces. Remove embedded foreign
matter and leave surfaces chemically clean.

2.8 WALL SHELVING

A. Plastic-Laminate Shelving: Plastic-laminate sheet, Grade HGL or HGP, shop bonded


to both sides of plywood. Sand surfaces to which plastic laminate is to be bonded.

1. Shelf Thickness: 19 mm.


2. Edge Treatment: Finish both edges with rigid PVC extrusion, through color with
satin finish, 3 mm thick.

B. Adjustable Shelf Supports: Zinc-plated steel standards and shelf brackets, complying
with BHMA A156.9, Types B04102 and B04112, surface mounted.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine areas, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation
tolerances, location of framing and reinforcements, and other conditions affecting
performance of manufactured wood casework.

B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 CASEWORK INSTALLATION

A. Install level, plumb, and true; shim as required, using concealed shims. Where
manufactured wood casework abuts other finished work, apply filler strips and scribe for
accurate fit, with fasteners concealed where practical.

B. Base Cabinets: Set cabinets straight, level, and plumb. Adjust subtops within 1.5 mm
of a single plane. Fasten cabinets to masonry or framing, wood blocking, or
reinforcements in walls and partitions with fasteners spaced 600 mm o.c. Bolt adjacent
cabinets together with joints flush, tight, and uniform. Align similar adjoining doors and
drawers to a tolerance of 1.5 mm.

C. Wall Cabinets: Hang cabinets straight, level, and plumb. Adjust fronts and bottoms
within 1.5 mm of a single plane. Fasten to hanging strips, masonry, or framing,
blocking, or reinforcements in walls or partitions. Align similar adjoining doors to a
tolerance of 1.5 mm.

D. Install hardware uniformly and precisely. Set hinges snug and flat in mortises unless
otherwise indicated. Adjust and align hardware so moving parts operate freely and
contact points meet accurately. Allow for final adjustment after installation.

E. Adjust casework and hardware so doors and drawers operate smoothly without warp or
bind. Lubricate operating hardware as recommended by manufacturer.

3.3 INSTALLATION OF TOPS

A. Field Jointing: Where possible make in the same manner as shop jointing, using
dowels, splines, adhesives, and fasteners recommended by manufacturer. Prepare
edges to be joined in shop so Project-site processing of top and edge surfaces is not
required. Locate field joints where shown on Shop Drawings.

C. Abut top and edge surfaces in one true plane, with internal supports placed to prevent
deflection.

3.4 INSTALLATION OF SHELVING

A. Securely fasten shelf standards to masonry, partition framing, wood blocking, or


reinforcements in partitions.

1. Fasten shelf standards at ends and not more than 300 mm o.c.

B. Install shelf standards plumb and at heights to align shelf brackets for level shelves.
Space standards not more than 750 mm o.c.

C. Install shelving level and straight, closely fitted to other work where indicated.

3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTING

A. Repair or remove and replace defective work as directed on completion of installation.

E. Tread Insert: Exterior carpet; solution dyed polypropylene fibers with 50/50 blend of
600/12-denier multi-filament and 595/D1 monofilament in color as selected and approved
by Engineer/Engineers Representative from manufacturer's standard choices. Textured
fibers shall have ultraviolet blockers and color as integral part of the filament. Carpet
fiber and monofilament shall be fusion-bonded to a rigid two-ply backing to prevent
fraying and supplied in continuous splice-free lengths. Waterproof fibers shall not get
soggy, rot, fade or stain.

2.3 CONCRETE FILL AND GROUT MATERIALS

A. Provide concrete grout and fill equivalent in strength to cast-in-place concrete slabs for
recessed mats and frames. Use aggregate no larger than one-third fill thickness.

2.4 FABRICATION

A. Floor Mats: Shop fabricate units to greatest extent possible in sizes indicated. Unless
otherwise indicated, provide single unit for each mat installation; do not exceed
manufacturer's recommended maximum sizes for units that are removed for maintenance
and cleaning. Where joints in mats are necessary, space symmetrically and away from
normal traffic lanes. Miter corner joints in framing elements with hairline joints or provide
prefabricated corner units without joints.

B. Recessed Frames: As indicated, for permanent recessed installation, complete with


corner pins or reinforcement and anchorage devices.

1. Fabricate edge-frame members in single lengths or, where frame dimensions

2. One complete set of all shade components demonstrating compliance with
project requirements when applicable.
1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer Qualifications:
1. The responsibility for the design, engineering, installation, and performance of
motorized window shade systems specified will be assigned to a single
manufacturer and their qualified dealers/installers.
2. Minimum 5 years experience in manufacture of precision-engineered, low-
voltage motorized shading systems.
3. Furnish shading system and electrical control equipment for a complete
installation and single source responsibility of shading and lighting control
where applicable.
4. The manufacturer, subsidiary, or licensed agent will be qualified to supply the
products specified and to honor any claims against the product presented in
accordance with the warranty.
5. Provide 24-Hour / 7-Day technical support to troubleshoot system wiring and
aid in system programming.
B. Installer Qualifications: Installer shall be qualified to install and commission the
specified products by prior factory training, experience, demonstrated performance,
and acceptance of any requirement of the manufacturer, subsidiary of the manufac-
turer, or licensed agent.
C. Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of preparation techniques and applica-
tion workmanship.
1. Install shade in areas designated by Engineer/Engineers Representative.
2. Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship and operation are
approved by Engineer/Engineers Representative.
3. Rework mock-up as required to produce acceptable work.
1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.
B. Do not deliver shades to the project until all concrete, masonry, plaster, painting and
other wet work has been completed and is dry.
C. Deliver shades to project in protective packaging, uniquely labeled to identify each
shade for each opening. Schedule delivery to prevent delays to completion of work,
but to minimize on-site storage time.
D. Store materials in a dry, secure place. Protect from weather, surface contaminants,
corrosion, construction traffic, and all other potential damage.
1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within
limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products
under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

1. Shade system shall not be installed until the building is operating at ambient
temperature and humidity ranges consistent with that intended for buildings
ultimate use.

1.7 COORDINATION
A. The Contractor shall coordinate installation of the following items with the window
shade contractor for the window treatment systems:
1. Metal shade pockets recessed into ceiling system and ceiling trim (closure flap)
or assembly.
B. The Contractor shall provide the following materials and services to the window
shade contractor for electrically powered window treatments:
1. Power wiring in accordance with requirements provided by the window shade
contractor or electrical contractor.
2. Low-voltage wiring as necessary for operation of shade control system with
requirements provided by the window shade or electrical contractor.
C. Scheduling:
1. Fabricate shades after obtaining field dimensions for each opening.
2. Coordinate construction of surrounding conditions to allow for timely field
dimension verification.
3. Manufacturers standard lead times apply. Reference submittal and schedule
accordingly for project timeline.
1.8 WARRANTY
A. Provide manufacturers standard warranty covering 2 year parts and labour and 8
years limited parts warranty to repair and replace defective equipment. All these
works shall be executed by the Contractor as instructed by the Owner.

1.9 MAINTENANCE
A. Make ordering of new equipment for expansions, replacements, and spare parts
available to a qualified dealer or installer.
B. Make replacement parts available for minimum of ten years from date of manufacture.
C. Provide factory direct technical support hotline 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
D. Provide on-site service support within 24 hours anywhere in continental United
States and within 72 hours worldwide except where special visas are required.
E. Offer renewable service contract on yearly basis, to include parts, factory labor, and
annual training visits. Make service contracts available up to ten years after date of
system commissioning.
PART 2- PRODUCTS

2.3 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
A. Aesthetics
1. Symmetrical light gaps of no more than 19mm typical or 20mm minimum
2. Shade mounting position can be adjusted while the shade is installed to ensure
perfect shade centering.
B. Operation. Shade utilizes Electronic Drive Unit with the following requirements:
1. Operates without exceeding a 44dBA Sound Pressure Level (SPL) measured
three (3) feet or one (1) meter from the motor.
2. Operates independently, without the use of external group controllers.
3. Makes no audible clicks when the motor starts or stops.
4. Precisely controls roller shade speed for accurate shade tracking within
1.5mm throughout the entire shade travel.
5. Includes power failure memory for preset stop points, open and closed limits,
shade grouping, shade sub-grouping, and system configuration.
6. Integrates directly without interfaces with Roman shades and draperies that
utilize Electronic Drive Units
7. Systems with multiple Electronic Drive Units are electronically synchronized and
start, stop and move smoothly in unison at all times.
C. Capacity:
1. System allows 96 devices per communication link including electronic drive
units, wallstations, and interfaces. Refer to drawings for logic schematic.
2. System integrates with central lighting control system to control over 4000
electronic drive units, wallstations, and interfaces.
D. Grouping:
1. System groups and subgroups are reconfigured at the point of control without
rewiring or access to the Electronic Drive Unit.
2. System wallstations control any Electronic Drive Unit, group, or subgroup
without requiring Group Controllers.
E. Presets and Open and Close Limits
1. Electronically precision-set and locked into a 10-year power-failure memory.
2. Programmable and adjustable from the Electronic Drive Unit and/or wall
mounted wallstations and/or hand held system remote controls
3. Electronic Drive Unit stores over 250 configurable pre-set stop points which can
be located at any point between open and closed limits and are recalled with
the press of a button on a wallstation, infra-red control or a contact closure
triggered by an external system.
4. Preset positions are recalled by wall stations, contact closure inputs, infrared
receivers, and lighting control system interfaces.
5. Each wall station in the system can select up to 5 unique presetspositions.
6. Preset positions are user-adjustable with a 5-second button press and hold

adjustment feature can be disabled at the wallstation location
F. Protection
1. System components provide appropriate (spike and brownout) over voltage pro-
tection ( 10% of line voltage) for all devices in the system.
2. The Electronic Drive Unit is powered via a UL Listed or UL Recognized Class 2
Power Supply.
3. System components provide stall protection so that in case that the motor stalls,
there is no damage to fabric or drive motor
4. System components provide over-heat protection to prevent overheating which
could damage the motor drive
G. Integration:
1. Roller shade system integrates directly with Lutron lighting control system
2. Roller shade system integrates with A/V equipment, time clocks and security
systems through contact closure inputs. Refer to drawings.
3. Electronic Drive Units are capable of receiving Infrared (IR) from hand-held
transmitters through infrared receivers on a wallstation, contact closure
interface, and/or through an IR receiver wired directly to the Electronic Drive
Unit without an external interface
4. Electronic Drive Units communicate directly to Lutron lighting control processor
through radio frequency communication with no additional communications
wiring.
2.4 ROLLER SHADES
A. Mounting:
1. Roller shade brackets provide symmetrical light gaps of 20 mm on each side of
shade
2. Universal mounting brackets can be used for wall, ceiling and jamb mount.
3. Two-piece mounting bracket provides level, projection, and shade centering
adjustments from mounting bracket.
4. System shall have a roller shade leveling adjustment that allows level
adjustment while the roller shades are mounted to the brackets.
5. System shall allow a side-to-side adjustment of up to 9 mm on each side while
the shade is mounted to the bracket to properly center shade over the window.
6. System shall have a projection adjustment of up to 12 mm allowing the shade to
clear the trim or move the shade closer to the window in order to have a tighter
seal between the fabric and the window.
7. System dual brackets shall be provided to permit two shades rollers to be
mounted in the same opening
8. A single EDU shall be capable of driving multiple shades with a coupling pin.
9. This pin allows for precision adjustment of the bottom bar levels without
removing the roller from its installed point or removing fabric from the roller
tube.

B. Shade Tube:
1. Fabric shall be connected to the tube with double-sided adhesive strip applied
for exact and firm mounting of the fabric and for easy adjustment of fabric to
prevent telescoping.
2. A minimum of one turn of fabric shall be placed on the roller before the working
section of fabric starts to protect the fabric and smooth out the starting seam.

2.5 FABRIC SELECTION


A. Fabric Type WT-1: SheerShade Basketweave 90, color and opnenness factor to be
selected by Engineer/Engineers Representative.
B. Fabric Type WT-2: SheerShade Basketweave 90, color and opnenness factor to be
selected by Engineer/Engineers Representative.
C. Fabric Type WT-3: Premier Blackout Shade, color to be selected by Engi-
neer/Engineers Representative.
D. BOTTOM BAR
1. Architectural Bottom Bar
a. Utilizes endcaps to coordinate with fabric selection in white, bronze, gray or
black
b. Contains a spline groove at the top to receive and secure the fabric to the
bar
c. Available in three options:
1) Full wrap, where roller shade fabric wraps around bottom bar
2) Half wrap, where roller shade fabric wraps around the interior room
side of the bottom bar only. Bottom bar extrusion shall be [white]
[bronze] [anodized aluminum] so that the non-wrapped side coordi-
nates with dual-sided fabrics or mullions.
3) Exposed, typically used for blackout applications. Bottom bar extru-
sion shall be anodized aluminum to coordinate with mullions and/or
side channels.
4) Provide "T" slot at the bottom for wool-pile light seal, if desired.
2. Standard Sealed bottom Bar shall be a 24 mm wide by 4.75 mm thick extruded
aluminum bar enclosed on all sides in a thermally sealed pocket across the bot-
tom of the shading fabric.
2.6 CONTROLS
A. Wall Mounted Controls:
1. Low voltage wallstations are able to electronically set and reconfigure shade
open and close limits, shade preset positions, system groups, and system
subgroups at the control without rewiring and without access to the Electronic
Drive Unit.
2. Faceplates attach using no visible means of attachment
3. Low voltage wallstations fit into a standard backbox.
4. Engraved artwork scheduled for controls, such as borders and logos, are
applied in a method designed to resist removal by scratching, cleaning, etc.
5. Manufacturer ensures the following items regarding product color:

a. Product color matches NEMA standard WD1, Section 2, and the
maximum color deviation from this standard shall not exceed E=1,
CIE L*a*b color space units. For non-NEMA colors, color match
coordination shall be provided on request.
b. Color variation of any control in the same product family shall not
exceed E=1, CIE L*a*b color units.
c. Visible parts shall exhibit ultraviolet color stability when tested with
multiple actinic light sources as defined in ASTM D4674-89.
Manufacturer to submit proof of testing upon request
d. Wall stations are laser engraved with appropriate description. Silk-
screen borders, logos, and graduations use a graphic process that
chemically bonds to faceplate, resistant to removal by scratching and
cleaning.
6. Wallstation(s) provide an immediate local LED response upon button activation
to indicate that a system command has been sent from the wallstation. LED
remains lit contingent upon receiving system confirmation of the successful
completion of the command.
7. Wallstation(s) have removable button assemblies that can be replaced in the
field to change colors, button configurations, and engraving.
8. Wallstation buttons are backlit.
9. Wallstations are capable of simultaneously controlling one or more shades, up
to the maximum number of shades in the system.
10. Wallstations are of type: Refer to Wallstation Schedule for operation
requirements.
e. Two-Button Wallstation:
1) Wallstation has buttons for selecting the
following for one group of shades: full-open and
full-close.
f. Three-Button Wallstation:
1) Wallstation has buttons for selecting the

B. IR Transmitters and Receivers:
1. IR Receivers are available on system wallstation, as an attachment to the
Electronic Drive Unit, or on the system contact closure input board. Refer to
drawing for schedule of operation.
2. IR Receivers connect directly to the Electronic Drive Unit and do not require
additional tools or interfaces.
3. IR Receivers include circuitry to reduce degraded performance from ambient
interference such as electronic ballast noise or sunlight.
4. Color: White IR Receiver with white wiring.
5. Through use of IR extensions, the receiver may be mounted on any flat surface
up to 50 feet from the Electronic Drive Unit.
6. Remote Controls electronically set and reconfigure shade open and close limits,
shade preset points, system groups, and system subgroups at the control
without rewiring and without access to the Electronic Drive Unit.
7. System Remote Controls are Lutron Sivoia QED Hand-held Infrared
Transmitters. Refer to drawing for schedule of operation.
8. IR transmitters are of type: Refer to control schedule for operation require-
ments.
9. Open/close infrared hand-held transmitter provides OPEN/CLOSE and
momentary raise and lower functions.
10. 3-preset, infrared hand-held transmitter provides OPEN/CLOSE, three preset
stop points and momentary raise and lower functions.
11. Multi-function hand-held infrared Transmitter provides individual and group
control of shades for open, close, and momentary raise/lower functionality.
12. Control operates up to 4 shades or groups of shades.
13. Control operates both light filtering and blackout shades on the same window.
14. Multi-function light and window treatment hand-held Infrared transmitter
provides individual control of up to 2 shades or 2 groups of shades and preset
lighting from the same remote.
15. Shade operation allows for open, close, and momentary raise/lower
functionality.
16. Lighting functions include presets 1,2,3,4, and off.
C. Interfaces:
1. Interface via Contact Closure Inputs
a. Shade system interfaces to control system by others via dry contact
closure input (CCI) device.
a) CCI can control any or all shades in the system via the communica-
tions link
b) CCI grouping and control functions can be re-configured without re-
wiring.
c) CCI can be configured to control up to four individual groups of
shades.
b. CCI accepts up to eight dry contact closure inputs which can be configured

initiate the correct function.
2. Interface with Lutron Grafik Eye System:
a. Shade system interfaces to Lutron Grafik Eye lighting system to provide
single system control of daylight and electric light in the space.
b. Interface (s) provides buttons for selecting the following for one group of
shades: full-open, full-closed, three programmable preset positions, and
raise/lower.
c. Interface(s) provides an immediate local LED response upon button
activation to indicate that a system command has been sent from interface.
d. Interface(s) is capable of simultaneously controlling one or more shades,

lighting control system.

PART 3- EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Begin installation after substrates have been properly prepared.
B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Engi-
neer/Engineers Representative of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.
3.2 PREPARATION
A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.
B. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achiev-
ing the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.
3.3 INSTALLATION
A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
B. Install shades in windows level and plumb to provide smooth operation.
C. Install in accordance with manufacturers product data and approved shop drawings.

D. Field measurement and installation shall be performed by a factory-qualified techni-
cian.
3.4 ADJUSTING
A. Adjust level, projection, and shade centering directly from mounting bracket.
B. Adjust fabric on tube if visibly telescoping.
3.5 CLEANING
A. Touch up damaged finishes and repair minor damage in order to eliminate evidence
of repair. Remove and replace work that cannot be satisfactorily repaired.
B. Clean exposed surfaces, including metal and shade fabric, using non-abrasive ma-
terials and methods recommended by the shade fabric manufacturer. Remove and
replace work that cannot be satisfactorily cleaned.
3.6 DEMONSTRATION
A. Demonstrate operation method and instruct owner's personnel in the proper opera-
tion and maintenance of the window shade systems.
B. Manufacturers Instructions:
1. Installation, Programming, and Maintenance instructions to be included in
product packaging.
2. 24-Hour / 7-Day Factory Technical Support shall be available to aid with
unforeseen installation difficulties.
3.7 PROTECTION
A. Protect installed products until completion of project.
B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion

FIXED THEATER SEATING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

A. Section includes fixed audience seating with the following:


1. Fixed, upholstered theater chairs.
2. Support standards.
3. Chair accessories.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include construction details, material
descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for fixed
audience seating.

B. Shop Drawings: Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other
work.

1. Seating Layout: Show seating layout, aisle widths, row-lettering and chair-
numbering scheme, chair widths, and chair spacing in each row.
2. Accessories: Show accessories, including locations of left- and right-hand tablet
arms, electrical devices, accessibility provisions, and attachments to other work.

C. Samples for Initial Selection: For each type of exposed finish, color, texture, and pattern
indicated.

D. Samples for Verification: For each type of exposed finish required, prepared on Samples
of size indicated below:
1. Wood and Plywood Materials and Finishes: Manufacturer's standard-size unit, not
less than 75 mm square.
2. Upholstery Fabric: Full width by 914-mm long section of fabric from dye lot to be
used for the Work, with specified treatments applied. Show complete pattern
repeat. Mark top and face of fabric.

E. Product Certificates: For each type of flame-retardant treatment of fabric, from


manufacturer.

F. Field quality-control reports.

G. Maintenance Data: For fixed audience seating to include in maintenance manuals.


Include the following:

1. Methods for maintaining upholstery fabric.


2. Precautions for cleaning materials and methods that could be detrimental to
seating finishes and performance.

H. Warranty: Sample of special warranty.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of seating required, including accessories and
mounting components, from single source from single manufacturer.

1. Upholstery Fabric: Obtain fabric of a single dye lot for each color and pattern of
fabric required.

B. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics of Upholstered Chairs:

1. Fabric: Class 1 according to DOC CS 191 and 16 CFR 1610.61, tested according
to California Technical Bulletin 117.
2. Padding: Comply with California Technical Bulletin 117.
3. Full-Scale Fire Test: Comply with California Technical Bulletin 133.

C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in


NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and
application.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install seating until spaces are enclosed and
weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, work above ceilings is complete,
and temporary or permanent HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient
temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder of the
construction period.

B. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of seating layout and construction


contiguous with seating by field measurements before fabrication.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Contractor agrees to repair or replace components of fixed audience seating
that fail in materials or workmanship within specified maintenance period of two years.

1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:


a. Structural failures including standards, beams, and pedestals.
b. Faulty operation of self-rising seat mechanism.
c. Wear and deterioration of fabric and stitching beyond normal use.
d. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal
weathering and use.

2. Warranty Periods: As follows, from the end of the maintenance period as


mentioned above.

a. Structural: Five years.


b. Operating Mechanisms: Three years.

1.7 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra materials from the same production run that match products installed and
that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels
describing contents.

1. Chair Seats and Backs: Furnish a quantity of full-size units equal to 5 percent of
amount installed for each type and size of chair seat and back.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Fixed Theater Seating: basis-of design product: Subject to compliance with the

2.2 MATERIALS

Veneer Materials

F. Polyurethane Foam: Density not less than 28.8 kg/cu m, fire retardant, nonhardening and
non-oxidizing, with high resistance to alkalis, oils, moisture, and mildew.

G. Upholstery Fabric: Refer to Interior Finish Legend.

2.3 UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS

A. Fixed seating system designed to permit radial installation using common middle support
standards in each row and aisle standards aligned as indicated on drawings. Width of
seats not less than 559 mm, except exit seat locations may be reduced to 508 mm to
complete specific row dimensions.

B. Backs: Fixed type; two-panel construction with fabric covering over padding and
protective back panel, with installed height not less than 813 mm above finished floor.
1. Padding: Polyurethane foam not less than 25 mm thick bonded to structural
support.
2. Covering: Fabric bonded to padding and fastened by upholstery technique that
facilitates replacement.
3. Rear Panel: One-piece molded plywood, not less than 6.4 mm thick, with exposed
back surface of hardwood face veneer.

C. Seats: Hinged type, constructed to permit reupholstering without removing seat from
chair.

1. Steel Seat Construction: One-piece sheet steel pan construction, reinforced at
stress points and designed to completely enclose hinges and self-rising seat
mechanism; supporting not fewer than 16 coil springs or five non-sag serpentine
springs. Separate padding from springs with burlap sheeting cemented to
polyurethane foam padding formed with minimum thickness of 44 mm. Upholster
with fabric sewn into box construction without welts and securely fastened to
supporting frame to provide smooth, wrinkle-free surface.
a. For serpentine spring construction, provide not less than 75 mm thick foam
padding at front edge of seat.

D. Hinges: Self-lubricating, noiseless steel hinges with brass alloy bearings or nylon
bushings, equipped with spring mechanism that causes unoccupied seat to rise
automatically to uniform 3/4 fold, with 100 percent fold when additional pressure is
applied.

E. Arm Rests: Locate at aisles and between chairs; mount to support standard with
concealed fasteners; exposed surfaces of solid hardwood lumber with smoothed edges.

F. End Panels: One piece panels fastened securely to aisle standards with concealed
fasteners, configured as follows:
1. Shape: Rectangular.
2. Finish: Solid hardwood.

2.4 STANDARDS

A. Support Standards: One-piece cast iron, with integral mounting points for backs, seats,
and arm rests, and integral floor anchoring points.

2.5 ACCESSORIES

A. Folding Tablet Arms: At standard to right side of each seat, provide manufacturer's
standard fold-away tablet arm assembly, with hinge and swivel mechanism securely
fastened to underside of writing surface and designed to provide solid support in the
open position and semi-automatic return to stowed position beneath right arm rest and
parallel to right standard.
1. Finish: Hardwood plywood veneer, with smooth, rounded edges.
2. Size: Writing surface not less than 0.0645 sq. m (100 sq inches).

B. Aisle Lights: Manufacturer's standard UL-approved concealed lamp assemblies, with


louvers to conceal lamp and direct light toward floor, mounted beneath aisle arm rest;
wiring route concealed to floor connection.

2.6 FINISHES

A. Ferrous Metals: Manufacturer's standard two-coat baked enamel finish, applied over
conversion coating appropriate to base metal.

B. Hardwood: Manufacturer's standard clear low-gloss finish.

C. Fabric: refer to Interior Finish Legend.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine floors, risers, and other adjacent work and conditions, with Installer present, for
compliance with requirements and other conditions affecting performance of the Work.

B. Examine locations of electrical connections.

C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install seating in locations indicated and fastened securely to substrates according to


manufacturer's written installation instructions.

1. Use installation methods and fasteners that produce fixed audience seating
assemblies with individual chairs capable of supporting an evenly distributed 272-
kg static load without failure or other conditions that might impair the chair's
usefulness.
2. Install standards and pedestals plumb.

B. Install seating with chair end standards aligned from first to last row and with backs and
seats varied in width and spacing to optimize sightlines.

C. Install seating so moving components operate smoothly and quietly.

3.3 ADJUSTING

A. Adjust chair backs so that they are aligned with each other in rows.

B. Adjust self-rising seat mechanisms so seats in each row are aligned when in upright
position.

C. Verify that all components and devices are operating properly.

D. Verify that seating returns to correct at-rest position.

E. Repair minor abrasions and imperfections in finishes with coating that matches factory-
applied finish.

F. Replace upholstery fabric damaged during installation.
