ThemajorfocusinScienceforgradefiveisonthestructureandfunctionsofthehumanbodysystems:
Muscular,Skeletal,Digestive,Circulatory,RespiratoryandNervous.Theoverallscienceunitwouldbestarted
offwiththedigestive,circulatoryandrespiratoryandnervoussystem.Afterlearningthefirstfoursystems
studentswouldthenlearntheMuscoskelealsystem.
Withthisunitstudentswilllearnaboutthedifferenttypesandcompositionofbones.Studentswillalso
learnaboutbodymovementbydescribingthefunctionsandlocationsofdifferenttypesofmuscle.
Weendtheunitwithtwolessonsthatdemonstratehowallthesystemsinterconnectandworktogether.
ObjectivesofIndividualLessons.
1) TheHumanSkeleton:Studentswillbeabletoidentifythemajorbonesinthehumanbodybyviewinga
realskeletonandbycreatingtheirownskeleton.
2) WhatisaJointandhowdoesitwork?
3) Whatkindofmuscleareyou?Studentswillbeabletoclassifymusclesinthehumanbodyasvoluntary
orinvoluntary,andassmooth,cardiac,orskeletal,byfirstexploringactivitiesthatengagesomeofthese
muscles.Afterviewingimagesofdifferentmuscles,studentswillbeabletodrawandlabelthemajor
muscles.
4) MuscleMovement?Studentswillbeabletoparticipateinmusclestrengthandflexibilityexercisesand
describehowweightsandcertainmachinesatthegymworktobuildourmuscles.
5) TheBodyandallofitsSystems:Studentswillbeabletocreatealifesizehangingmobileoftheir
bodys,thenputtogetherallthesystemsofthebodyusingthe2Dimagecutoutsofthemajororgans,as
createdinArtclass.Studentswillbeabletoexplainhowthesystemsareinterconnected.
Unit:MuscularandSkeletalSystem:Focusingonthebonesandmuscleswithinthehumanbody,witha
teachingemphasisonkeepingbonesandmuscleshealthy.
LearningIntentions:Studentswillbeabletoidentifymainbonesintheskeletalsystem,aswellasimportant
musclesinhumanbody,thedifferencebetweeninvoluntaryandvoluntarymusclesandlocationofmusclesin
body.Studentscanidentifyhowthedigestive,skeletalandmuscularsystemareinterconnected,specificallyhow
themuscularandskeletalsystemsupportoneanother.Studentwilldescribethebasicstructureandfunctionsof
thehumanrespiratory,digestive,circulatory,skeletal,muscular,andnervoussystems.Studentswillexplainhow
thedifferentbodysystemsareinterconnected.Aswellas,makepredictions,identifyvariables,anddescribethe
stepsinvolvedinexperimentsthatexplorethehumanbody.
