for keyboard instrument

by

Christopher Stembridge
NOTE

This piece was inspired by a combination of "La Mi Re", an anonymous early

16th-century English piece, and DSCH (see illustration).
It should be played initially quite fast, = 80+, repeated, with some
ornamentation added, at = c. 70, then repeated at = c. 60 with more
ornamentation.1
The juxtaposed chromatic notes suggest the possible use of a cembalo
cromatico, the notion of which was revived in mid 19th-century Russia by
Count Odoyesvski whose chromatic piano is preserved in the Glinka Museum.
The piece may however also be played on any instrument with a normal
keyboard tuned to any temperament the performer considers appropriate.
On organ two manuals may be used, or separate treble and bass registrations
on the same keyboard where available.

1 For the final repeat the original title Dmitrys Doleful Dumpe is perhaps appropriate

w = 80-88 (see notes)
