Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: 08/02/2017 Time: 11am-12pm Year: 11

Learning Area: Science Human Biology Topic: Cell Structure &

Function Lesson 2
Curriculum content description:
Select, construct and use appropriate representations, including labelled diagrams and
images of various cells, tissues and organ systems, to communicate conceptual
understanding, solve problems and make predictions
Students prior knowledge and experience:
Knowledge of cell structure and function from lesson 1.

Learning purpose:
Now that students know the cell structures and functions individually, put that learning
together to label a diagram of the cell. This is the basis for all further teaching in this class
and all other biology classes.
Learning objectives: Evaluation:
On completion of this lesson, students
will be able to: Completion of diagram worksheet.
Interaction with students in group activity to
Correctly label all organelles in a diagram of put cell together also relating back to
a cell. lesson 1 by asking questions about the
Prepare flash cards for revision for tests and functions of parts of cell as they identify the

term. Completion of flash cards

Preparation and Resources:

Interactive cell web page

Quizlet
Cell magnetic model
Mini cell model to pass around
Continuation with worksheets handed out in lesson 2
Coloured paper
Markers/Coloured Pens
Bioviewers

Catering for diversity (detail any adjustments considerations for educational/resource

adjustments)
Timing: Learning Experiences:

1. Introduction:

*Continue Lesson 1 if all content not covered in last lesson then review the
content as below*

Yesterday we talked about the structure of a cell and their individual functions,
5mins- can anyone give me the function of the cytoplasm?
10min We also talked about the cell theory. There were 3 components to that theory,
can you tell me one of them? Another? And the last one?

Today we are going to put all that together so we can label a diagram of the cell.
Once we finish that we are going to start a bit of prep for your test (If you do prep
after each topic you wont have a pile of notes to make for review a week before
the test).

2. Sequence of learning experiences:

10-
15min Using the magnetic model of the cell, involve students in identifying the parts of
the cell and ask a student who gets the correct answer to add it to the giant cell
on the board.
Students will complete their diagram worksheet as we go through the cell parts
again.
Ask about the function of the parts as well as we go through to test knowledge
gained from lesson 1.

Hand out coloured paper (with names of cell parts & picture on one side and lines
to write on, on the other)

5mins

Explain the use of flash cards and why we are doing them:
Flash cards can be used for revision for tests/exams and are a fun way to do that.
You will have the name of the cell part/organelle on one side with a picture of that
part and on the back you will write out key functions of the cell that you think are
most important to know for an assessment.
20-
30min Use interactive web page as well as their notes to help them construct their flash
cards.

During this time walk around and have a chat with students to gauge their
understanding of the functions of the cell and offer assistance to students
needing clarification.
If a number of students have the same problem, then will answer the question as
a class and get them involved in the answering so different ways of thinking how
to relate the structure to the function can be presented.

If moving along quickly get the bioviewers set up so they can have a
look at cells in preparation for the microscope lesson tomorrow

3. Lesson conclusion:

Now that weve talked about cell theory as well as cell structures and their
functions you should understand that cells are the basic units of life and
understand how each part of the cell contributes to the overall function of the
cell. This is going to be carries over when we move on to learning about systems
and cell to cell interaction ect.
5mins
If you havent finished your flash cards, we may have some time to work on them
tomorrow but otherwise it is up to you to finish those up at home by Thursday
next week.

Also I have set up a Quizlet account for our class which you can access. Please
sign up or an account at quizlet.com and request to join Mrs.*******s Year 11
General Human Biology Class. This is a tool to help you with studies. I have set up
tests and online flash cards for you on this site so make sure to use this tool for
your studies.

Lesson Evaluation:

This lesson went better than the last in terms of engagement level of the students. They
responded better to the change in activities as well as the more hands on approach to
learning. The flash cards were really good for the students, they seemed to like the idea
more which was really great as it made them be a bit more independent with their learning.
With this class I feel like instructions need to be simple and very straight forward and at the
same time they dont want content spoon fed to them. Finding the balance will be an
interesting journey. But I endeavour to get there.
From now on when teaching them I will use more creative methods that allow them to be
creative as well. I was having more issues with behaviour this lesson. It became harder to
control the classroom and I feel I need to work more on my presence as well as the signals I
can send that they will perceive as get back on task without having to address them all the
time. Being a smaller class that seems to like to chat in their individual groups, I think it will
be better to involve them in more activities so they have less time to chat about other
things but also will engage them more than just sitting at a desk.
