Practical Aspects
6th Annual Symposium

The goal of the 6th Annual Symposium, Practical Aspects of

Diabetes Care is to provide cutting-edge information about diabetes.
The curriculum will emphasize the challenges in day-to-day management
of diabetes and practical ways to overcome those hurdles, specifically
using new technologies. We will offer an afternoon workshop session
on How to Implement Shared Decision Making With Patients, Parents
and Family Members. This session will feature the five-step SHARE
framework developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
(AHRQ) around shared decision-making. Recent literature shows
that many clinicians think they already apply Shared-Decision
Making, but they are surprised to learn the depth associated
with implementation.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this Symposium, learners should be able to:
Identify factors affecting the early onset of diabetes-related complications.
Identify factors affecting the management of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Identify metabolic effects associated with the gut derived therapeutic option in patients
with type 2 diabetes.
Recognize challenges faced to develop new technology.
Describe and prescribe treatments leading to optimal control of diabetes and obesity.
Describe the benefits of using patient decision aids, educational resources and shared
decision making.
Recognize that organizational change is needed to implement effective shared decision making.
