Unit Paper 2

Hurwitz and Day (2007) states that visual culture is such a broad concept that everyone can

see and describe it differently. Visual culture is art that has adapted into the world through the

electronic media usages, such as cell phones, computers, television, music video, movies, and

even the internet (Hurwitz & Day, 2007). The invention of electronic are use so much that it

became a part of everyday life. In art education, teacher should tend to let student experience the

art that they see. Barrett (2003) states that visual culture is seen two types of ways, such as

denotation and connotation. Denotation are what we see in pictures and connotation are what the

things and words suggested by what they show and how they are seen (Barrett, 2003). Pictures

are portraying with words that children can be taught from (Barrett, 2003).

If I was going to teach art, I will use picture that will give my students an idea of what they see

and let them express to the class what they think they see. Just like in class when we do studio

time, Professor Ward let us visual what we see then interpret what we saw. There are no right or

wrong answers. Hearing from different students will be a good experience to see the way they

view things. Now that art has become almost everything that we use every day, I can allow the

students to use media and use it to show me what they can do with art.
